Happy with the Roku 2 #4210R

We cut the cord (satellite), and we're pretty darn happy. This little box works great paired with a Tablo (over-the-air recorder). *You could never crawl out of your lazy boy, and still not watch it all. There is something for everybody with all of the available Roku apps. You still have the recurring cost of internet, plus maybe a Netflix type of service, but that's pretty much standard in most modern households these days anyway. Don't miss a thing from the cable/satellite junk programming packages we are forced to purchase, just to view a handful of real channels (subjective.... yes). Easy to set up. Versatile throughout the house on various viewing devices. To make it simple, we would suggest an aftermarket remote that will control tv/dvd/amp/roku. Quite a few out there. Google it. PS - *Just kidding, get outside once in a while;)

We bought this a week ago seeking a better solution to cable and satellite! We couldn't be happier with our decision! I'm 60 and no technology geek but everything was as advertised and very simple to see up! Our choices and access are great and easy to access. I would highly recommend this to anyone!

I bought a Roku 2 after a few month experiment with a different streaming device. The Roku 2 was roughly half the price and vastly outperforms in speed and overall functionality. Moreover, it provides greater access to apps or channels.

Works well when it is able to connect

Roku is great for putting all of my streaming services together in one place. The Connections and setup are super easy. Quality is determined by your internet speed - Roku adjusts automatically. I replaced the kids Xbox for streaming (a Roku costs just a bit more than Xbox Live's annual subscription, to that was a no-brainer). The quality was better on the Xbox, but the Xbox would often dump you out of a program right in the middle when someone else was putting a demand on our home network. Roku doesn't do that.
Overall I like the Roku and prefer it over a "smart TV" that is much more sophisticated in how it tracks your viewing behavior. The remote works great for me.
One big complaint is the lack of a power button. I do not need any of my devices maintaining constant contact with the internet (I turn my routers off at night). You have the choice of using a power strip or just plain unplugging the power connector on the back of the Roku box to get the warm thing to rest and leave your internet alone.
My other problem is that Roku seems to tank my DSL internet when I do power it on. Mine is connected with a new, quality Ethernet cable, not by WiFi. My other connections (another Ethernet connected computer and the WiFi network) are then lost, as the light on the router turns from green to red. It takes turning off the router, waiting a few minutes, then more waiting as the router is turned back on. Very frustrating. It seems this Roku desires to be first. I have to power it on first, then power on my internet. I have another Roku upstairs on a separate DSL (yes, I have two phone line DSL connections for internet - semi-rural area) that fortunately does not display this behavior, but it establishes its internet connection over WiFi.
A smaller point, if you choose not to allow Roku to custom tailor commercials for you (on channels that are "free") you might get the same commercial, two times in a row, over and over again. Rather primitive and self defeating since I develop a strong dislike for such boredom and am therefore less likely to buy their product.

I wanted to upgrade from my old Roku player for better streaming. I was able to set this up within a few minutes out of the box. Remembered my account settings and channels from the old one to the new one.

The Roku 2 I bought works beautifully, and is much superior to the product it replaces. Great picture and lightening quick.

A quality streaming player at an afforadable price

I bought this a couple weeks ago because I got tired of paying an outrageous cable bill and there was usually nothing ever on worth watching, and I am very happy that I did. The quality of the player is exceptional for the reasonable price. There are beyond plenty of channels available, with entertainment choices going way up into the thousands. Some channels will require a subscription such as Netflix, Hulu, Showtime, HBO GO etc. and there are tons of quality free channels also. If you do have cable, you can watch the channels that require you to sign in with your cable account credentials if your provider is listed for that channel. The sling channel app is awesome for me because it has 20 cable channels for 20 a month, and they are the channels that I like, (AMC, TBS, A&E, IFC, LIFETIME etc.) and you can start the show over if you miss anything, and can watch the already played shows on demand too. The player also has apps such as vudu and others where you can rent movies and tv, including new releases. The only reason I gave 4/5 stars is because when I watch tv on sling, the shows will sometime freeze up at different times requiring me to completely start the show over, which is very inconvienient and aggravating. It's also hard to fast forward and rewind tv shows on sling, but it can be done. I think this has to do with having other devices connected to wifi while Roku is streaming sling tv, (I have high-speed x 2 internet) which needs to be looked into. I believe it Roku could easily correct the problem they are a great company. I recommend Roku 2 as the player to be bought, since it's the same as the 3 & 4 except it doesn't have voice search button or microphone jack on remote. If you need those extra would be the only logival reason in my opinion to buy the 3 or 4 model. I do not recommend the Roku 1 however because the quality is not up to par with 2,3,4. I have not heard good things about the Roku stick. Hope this helps.
