Not Quite a Cable cutter

I was hoping to use Roku to cut my cable service, but most channels ask for my cable provider or ask for subscription for almost the cost of my cable service. If I sign up with a couple of these, it would cost me more than my cable.
Youtube has a couple of free news channels that I can stream 24 hours. So with Youtube, news and music are taking care of.
Now what I wish Roku could do is on the main screen, based on the channels I accessed, it would display new content those channels just added along with favorite content most people have watched on those channels (sort of recommendation). It would save me a lot of time browsing through the channels.
The follow feature is nice, but it's not available on all kinds of content.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I've been an owner of 2 Roku LT models for quite some time. I purchased one and got the other free when I bought a lifetime license for Playon. My original purchase came about as I was searching for a smart tv for my bedroom. I found several televisions for a few hundred dollars that met my needs, but when I added the smart television feature the cost of the set doubled in most cases. I couldn't justify to myself spending that much more just to have Netflix and other channels built into the unit so I decided to buy a Roku LT instead. I was completely satisfied and I never really intended to upgrade either one of them since they both did what they were supposed to do.
Recently I've had some problems with one of the LT units locking up and forcing me to use the reset button to get it to work again so I started to think about replacing it. I was a little intrigued by the fact that the advertisements for Roku 2 said it was faster. Although I wasn't really sure how that would improve things I decided to go ahead and purchase one. If nothing else I could just return it and go back to the LT if I felt the expense wasn't justified.
After I got it hooked up and running it wasn't very long before I was back at the store to buy another unit to replace my other LT. The speed is a factor, but the presentation of Netflix and Amazon Prime are so much better and more user friendly that I felt completely justified in replacing both my LT units even though one was still working fine. I especially like the USB port in the Roku2 which allows me to play video straight from a thumb drive.
With all the free trials to different channels I got when I purchased the Roku2 I can just about say that I got at least one of the units for little or no cost. Not that it matters, I'm happy I made the change and I'm really impressed with the Roku2.

It's good, but I should've shelled out the additional $30 to get the Roku 3. We have 1 Roku 3 in our media room and 2-Roku 2's. The Roku 2's are not quite as responsive and lag a bit. They get hung on specific screens from time to time. I've not had one single glitch with my Roku 3.

Roku has a blind spot they never tell you what is necessary for input and output for their devices. The Roku 2 does have an ethernet jack, so it can be hard wired or you can use a wireless connection. NO HEADPHONES with this product, so that was a screw up, otherwise 5 star rating
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

The Roku 2 (4210R) is exactly what I needed to setup my media streaming in my home. It's fast processor and fast internet connect allows me to stream true HD movies (no compression artifacts) from my media server (Plex) to my large screen TV.

Lousy freebies

I bought Roku because of the number of freebies advertised. I am on a fixed income, and need to control monthly costs. However, all the freebies I have seen on Roku are worthless; either they are previews (not full length features), movies I have never heard of, or they drive you crazy with commercials every few minutes. I run Netflix, which obviously has a monthly fee, and I bought one other subscription channel. So far, those seem to be enough, without any additional freebies. But I am disappointed.

For 2016, we decided to cancel our cable and use Roku and basic channels through a digital antennae. We love the Roku but there are two things I'd like to see change.
1. Some of the apps require you log in with your cable provider account credentials. Since we don't have cable anymore, we have no account therefore cannot unlock episodes on Nick Jr and Disney Jr apps. I'd like them to have a subscription as an alternative, similar to Netflix or Hulu.
2. It would be great to have an "Internet" channel where we can search for tv and movies online.
