Be Very Careful

If you're considering Roku as a way to cut the cord to your cable company and reduce costs, think again. I don't know how other cable services operate but with Optimum you still have to pay for cable service. All you're doing is replacing the cable box with the Roku box and getting a wider selection of channels, some of which are in fact free. Not even the basic three - NBC,CBS, ABC are completely free.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Plays well but otherwise needs help

Video-wise, the Roku looks and sounds good. The setup is reasonably good. Lot of selection of things to watch. Appears that Google "casting" can go to Roku (recognized on the phone as a casting target), but can't attest to how that works.
Downsides:
Some content ends up with ads, and difficult (impossible?) to skip, at least as far as I've found, with the remote control.
A lot of the available content is of marginal to bad quality (content and production-wise).
Light on the front of the Roku is too bright. Wish there was a way to turn it off.
While the remote is nicely simple, it still doesn't do some things which would be useful (volume, for instance).
Typing in codes with the provided remote control is *miserable*. For every site where I need to put in a password (Netflix, Amazon, etc), this was very painful. Same goes for using it for typing in a search. Search problem is somewhat mitigated in some cases by auto-completion, which does help.

Bought this about 6 weeks ago. We love this thing. We have a ps3 and a chromecast but the roku 2 out performs both by far. Never have buffering, running it on wifi, and switching apps is fast and smooth. We love it so much we just bought a roku 3 for the living room. Wish we would have had this 2 years ago when we cut the cable.

I have an old Toshiba 30" tube type TV that still works great and I had no desire to junk it just because it had no HDMI input. Did some research---"HDMI to AV Converter" What's that? Converts a digital HDMI signal to the old AV analog signal that my Toshiba needs. Will it work with Roku 2? Answer, yes it does. Very happy with Roku (and the converter)
