Epic says it all!

I was given this product for review. The Epic, is just that. My kid has taken to it like a duck to water. She rarely puts it down without having to be told to. Which in my eyes, is a good problem to have. It comes with an Android operating system that allows you download new learning tools, cleverly disguised as games, as they grow and need to be challenged a bit more. The variety of educational games that Leapfrog keeps coming out with is amazing! It's as if they are trying to one up themselves every time!
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play, Educational
I would recommend this to a friend!

A real tablet but still safe for kids

**We were provided the LeapFrog Epic for review purposes but all opinions are my own**
My 7 year old son and 5 year old daughter were so excited to see that the LeapFrog Epic is a real tablet! They love to play with my tablet but I always worry about what they are coming across even though I have pretty extensive parental controls set up.
There are so many things that I really like about the LeapFrog Epic. One of the best features from a parents point of view is the parental controls. I can manage up to 3 profiles and decide what apps each child's profile can access, how long they can use apps, and what time of day they can use the device. The web browser is, as always, kid-safe and gives parents the ability to add websites they want their child to have access to. There are no ads or pop-ups for kids to click onto to reach non age-appropriate material. Another feature that was awesome to see is the ability to expand the storage up to 32GB with a micro SD card.
It's important to note that you cannot use the game cartridges in the LeapFrog Epic. But it comes with 20+ games and my kids have yet to ask me for any new ones. You can also download apps and games from the app store and it now includes popular android apps as well including Fruit Ninja Academy: Math Master, Doodle Jump, and many more. A great thing they've implemented in the Epic is the Just For Me learning technology that adjusts the skill level in games based on your child's progress.
My kids have enjoyed hours of fun with the LeapFrog Epic and I love that I don't have to worry about what they're doing!
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play, Educational

This Epic is Epic!

They chose the right name for it because my kids are already obsessed with the word "Epic"! Everything is Epic!! When we first got our Epic we took it on vacation with us. Everyone was arguing over who got to play with it, so I told the kids I got to play with it first :-) I sat in the front seat and plugged it into our speakers of our car and we all played games with me holding it. One of our favorite games was the sentence game, but the kids love Octonauts, ninja math and the Preschool Games. The difference between the LeapPad epic and the regular LeapPads is that the LeapPad is an actual Android tablet. It has over 20 plus apps on it that are both LeapPad and Android. It does have the LeapPad internet on it which is a secure Internet for kids.
The LeapPad grows with your child. I love that about LeapFrog products. I love that in most of the games it also has auto-leveling. The other thing I love about the device is the green outer casing that comes with it. It is super heavy duty and will protect the LeapPad if it falls on the ground. The LeapPad epic does not work with any cartridges from your other LeapPads. That might be the only downfall of this product but other than that it comes with tons of games already installed, and options to install more games.
We have an iPad, but it is only used for school time. I don't have any games on it for the kids. I don't like systems where my kids can get on the internet. We have a Kindle that my daughter got from her dentist. But the thing I don't like about Kindles and iPads is if you download free games they always have ads popping up. With the LeapPad Epic those ads do not pop up which is wonderful. I love the pre kindergarten and kindergarten games already installed on it. It gives me 30 minutes to hand it over to my 4 year old who is in preschool so that I can work with the other kids. All in all this is a great product and I would totally recommend it to any and all of my friends.

Meh

We received this as a present for my child. I appreciated that it didn't require a monthly subscription and I could choose to buy what I wanted to use. Within the first 30 days of using it the tablet started glitching. The menu scrolls continually without us making it, the touch screen will randomly stop working, and the apps are expensive for such repetitive features. I would not recommend this tablet to others. My child enjoyed it the first few weeks but we've had nothing but trouble since then.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

A True Tablet but still LeapFrog!

I'm really excited that LeapFrog came out with the Epic that combines the LeapPad tablets my family already loves with the Android operating systems we already use.
The Android OS not only opens up the ability to download learning games from other publishers, but the control and management of the tablet is more thorough, with obvious ways to manage your apps, check if your tablet is ready to update, and have (safe) access to the Internet.
New in the Epic is the ability to add websites to your child's LeapSearch web browser (great if they do schooling online!). If you go to parental controls, you can also access the full internet yourself as needed. I highly value the safety that LeapFrog puts on the child's access to the Internet, and you can even set time limits for certain types of tablet activities, not allow use on school days, etc.
The Epic is now a real-deal tablet, with standard Android apps like Calendar, Weather, Calculator, Notepad, Bluetooth, etc. Your child truly can use this just like they would your own Android tablet, but with that amazing LeapFrog spin! Also, hitting the power button with one tap will put the tablet in sleep mode rather than always having to power up and down.
To me, this tablet has been the most touch-screen responsive out of all of the ones I've reviewed. The stylus really isn't needed unless the child is just more comfortable with it.
The speakers are on the back, and to me, that's a downside because as soon as the tablet is laid down, the sound is muffled. You can still hear the games/music, but it's obviously at a lower volume.
Loading some games does seem to take a little longer than I'm used to, but overall the tablet is quite fast and responsive, so it must just be the large content of the games.
One other note: It doesn't appear that all previous LeapPad apps/games can be used on the Epic, so look at the app store to see if your existing games will work if you intend to keep them. There is also no place for a cartridge.
I have to say that my child hardly noticed that this tablet is now a "real" tablet because the interface, although different from other LeapPads, is so intuitive. He does, however, like that it doesn't look as babyish as his sister's and refuses to call it a LeapPad now. He's 5; what can I say?
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play, Educational

A totally different Tablet!

My almost 6 year old is having a blast playing with the new LeapFrog Epic. He finally has stopped asking to borrow my phone or tablet. The Android based system allows us to download additional approved apps and the system - while it took a few hours to get used to - is really child friendly and customizable. Our family isn't used to Android products - so there was a small learning curve, but once we got the hang of how to get back to the home screen, etc... it's been really fun.
There is controlled web browsing with tons of videos and the device seems really durable.
Not only can you download LeapFrog educational games, but you also have access to selected Android apps.
As he grows, I can unlock other areas of web browsing, etc...
A great product - again!
Pros: Grows with child

Best LeapPad Yet!

The new LeapPad Epic lives up to its name. We have three other LeapPads in the house, but the Epic is the one my kids go after ever day!
Features they love:
The LeapPad Epic looks and preforms like a tablet
Android apps are available for the Epic
The home screen is customizable and the scene changes with the time of day
Ability to hook up to wifi and search safe sites
Features I love:
Safe internet access
Endless learning opportunities
Logic games that learn with my child.
This is by far the best LeapPad yet, and is definitely worth the money.
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child, Good for on-the-go play, Educational

Great Educational Tool

My son got this tablet for his second birthday almost six months ago and it has been amazing since the start. You can add apps and change controls as they get older. It has been a life saver on trips and my son has learned so much from it. One of the buttons started acting funny and the online support quickly responded to my email and the tablet is as good as new.
This is definitely something I would recommend to anyone with a little one.
Pros: Educational, Fun for kids, Good for on-the-go play, Grows with child
