[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have my printer set to "Black Ink Only", but it still runs out of the colored inks! It won't print in black if any of the other colors are empty, so I constantly have to spend money to replace the other colors (even though they are never used) just to print in black. This printer at home is minimally used since I do most of my printing at work. I've probably printed about 20 pages (using black ink only) in the past 2 years.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I'm sorry about the experience. I can understand your disappointment.
I am very sorry for the confusion. This type of printer has much different cartridges than a lot of other HP printers. Some printers can actually print using only a black cartridge, IF the tri-color cartridge is removed.
With this type of printer, when using the black only setting, you will still have to get color cartridges occasionally because the tiny nozzles that spray the ink onto the paper will clog unless they are cleared regularly. When you are not using a color, the printer will have to use a tiny bit of ink during maintenance to clear the nozzles for that color. Not doing so could ruin the printhead.
Something that you can do to help save ink is to shut down the printer when it is not in use. However, always use the power button on the printer itself to turn it off. That will let the printer 'park' so that the cartridges are protected from excess drying, which can clog the printhead and require cleaning to get it printing again.

There has always been the alert that using only HP brand ink will provide the best performance. I have made the mistake and used an off brand it caused so many issues I had to ask for help from at least two different sources. Never again. HP and only genuine HP ink for me.
