Too small
on July 6, 2022

The trays in the unit are very small which I didn’t realize until it arrived because the dimensions are not posted in the description. And I feel like it’s less well made than the older units I have. I’m disappointed.

Great for beginners to dehydration + travellers

I absolutely love this dehydrator - I got it in a period where I would often travel from my hometown to the town where I studied and I could easily bring it with along for the ride.
It is small which is less intimidating for a newbie to the dehydration wonders. I personally quickly got enthusiastic about dehydration and found it too small for my ambitions, resulting in much more work than if I had a 5-tray one which almost doubles the surface area.
The company is really helpful, at some point there was a problem in the ventilation system and they quickly helped us fix this.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Must have received a lemon

Purchased the Excalibur 4 tray in May of 2012; use it occasionally for mostly almonds. Love how they turn out. However, 1 year later, In July 2013 ordered replacement thermal fuse (heating element) for $16.22. Was easy enough to replace, however, now in Feb 2015 we need to order another! Love the size of the dehydrator for what I need, but frustrated when I have a batch of almonds in the dehydrator and it runs cold. I'm so careful to follow the manufacturers directions in the guide. Wondering if mine is a lemon or if others have this problem.

Please contact customer service and explain the issue about the fuse blowing out 2 times. They can resolve the issue over the phone.

Not worth the price

Bought this 2 months ago and it's already stopped heating. The first day I opened the box I was having problems with the fan hitting the mesh grill. There are plenty of people experiencing these problems and I'm not sure why they haven't been fixed yet. When it actually is functioning the thing works great.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I received the 4-Tray dehydrator for Christmas in 1988, and have used it exclusively for beef jerky a minimum of two times per month since. (have a batch nearing completion as we speak)
The unit has ALWAYS performed perfectly and even though it appears a little rough for the wear, I can always count on it's delicious rewards!
THANK YOU, Excalibur, for producing quality that stands the test of time!!

Could Be Better, But OK As Is

It's been a month now, and it's been a learning experience. Pro's: It's light, easy to store, easy to clean. It's Excalibur, so there's a good warranty and confidence that parts can be had should a need arise. Con's: The thermostat is garbage. At the low end, it's 10-12 degrees low (measured with Fluke digital meter). The closer you get to the 130 set point, the less the differential. On my unit, a hair below 130 yields about 123. A hair above jumps to 135. At 145 it was finally correct, as it remained to the 165 max. This is important as any jerky needs to reach such temps. The error on the low end isn't hard to live with, now that I know what temps are achieved at which setting. However, that research shouldn't be required. Given the low power of the heater & fan, it's necessary to rotate the trays as the drying isn't even. General comments: It's a well made plastic box with a reasonably quiet fan. My apt is a studio and the volume of the fan never disturbed my sleep or distracted from reading & such. The bottom is easy to clean with the shelves out, but a crumb tray would have been preferred. Final Thoughts: Glad to have bought it on sale. At full price, I would have been upset. If a timer is wanted, it can be purchased at the hardware store for a few bucks (unit only draws a few amps)

I just love the fact that it is so tiny that it fits perfectly on the counter, making it great to use on a weekly basis, not just for harvesting time! Great to make healthy snacks and try new recipe.
