I was very excited to purchase my first KitchenAid mixer. It's so stylish and has so many features, and besides, it's the one the chefs use on all the cooking shows I watch. But I'm not loving it as I expected. I almost regret having given away my mother's old (circa 1958) Sunbeam mixer--yes, it still works! That model had two sizes of ceramic bowl that rotated automatically as it mixed, and the motor and beaters were off to one side of the bowl. That made adding ingredients and scraping around the bowl as you worked very easy, although I'm sure by today's standards that would be considered a safety risk. The bowls were sturdy and easy to clean, and could be used for other purposes and even microwaved. This KitchenAid mixer has only one large metal bowl with a small pedestal that locks it into place. You can't rotate the bowl as you work. The pedestal is so small that the bowl is easy to tip over when it's not attached to the mixer. So you wouldn't want to use the bowl for much besides mixing on the machine, and working in the bowl after mixing is awkward and risky especially with liquids. And there's no smaller bowl for the little jobs. The motor is bulky and centrally placed, making adding ingredients around it difficult. There is a plastic feeding chute that you can attach, but that means you have to take it off every time you scrape and put it back on afterward, and it's one more item to clean, so I don't use it much. You basically have to stop the mixer and lift the motor and paddle every time you want to add something substantial. And the overly cautious instructions tell you to stop the mixer, unplug it, and unlock the motor and raise it, every time you scrape. Yeah, right! With the Sunbeam, you would decrease the speed and lift the motor a little after mixing, and whatever was stuck to the beaters would gently spin off into the bowl. Fortunately the KitchenAid paddle rotates itself around the bowl and is designed to be so efficient that you don't have to scrape as often, but it's still annoyingly inconvenient. The motor is much stronger than the old Sunbeam, and the dough hook and wire whisk attachments are great. And I'm sure eventually I will add the meat grinder and pasta roller attachments. But for the basics, this mixer is not the life-changing experience I was so looking forward to.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've wanted a Kitchen Aid mixer for a long time. Mom had one, but never really used it to it's full potential. Told the GF I wanted one, and she said we didn't need it. Needless to say after going through the holidays with it she's in love. "Don't listen to me when I tell you not to get something" her words not mine lol.
I am a home baker and had the same hand mixer for years. This is the best mixer ever. Batters and doughs take less time to make. The bowl design and splatter guard keep messes to a minimum. The different attachments have a multitude of uses. It is the best investment you can make for your kitchen.
I absolutely love my Kitchenaid. It makes some of the most tedious kitchen tasks a snap, like meringues and whipping cream. It also makes traditionally simple recipes, like cookies and cakes, a breeze. I just add my ingredients and watch the magic happen. When I'm finished, clean-up is easy. There are an abundance of available attachments too.
