Great Camera - Bad Manual
on November 19, 2014

I am using this camera for over a month. This is my 4th SLR and 2nd DSLR. I needed some time to understand the details of the camera features before I use it, but the included manual turned out to be awfully inadequate. It does not cover most of the features the camera provides. I had to search the net to find a rudimentary online camera manual on the Sony site which mentions the advanced features. But for understanding it better, I had to look for paid help from some pro. Unfortunately it was too new to have a third party guide book available.
But once I got to know the advanced features, I like the camera very much. It is obviously much more advanced than my 7 year old Nikon. The most important thing for me was the image stabilization in the body, allowing me to use older lens with this feature. The images came out great in the RAW as well as JPEG with very high ISO, which was very important to me. I like the advanced focus tracking feature "lock on focus" feature and also the continuous focus tracking. It was very fast, even in the live view, due to the fixed mirror. The viewfinder is really great, and I almost never realize it is not optical, except when it allows me to see clearly even in low light.
I got one old Minolta 500mm mirror lens with auto focus, the only one in the world (Sony unfortunately discontinued it in 2010) and I needed a Sony body to use it. This camera was perfect for it with all its advanced features including image stabilization. As it is very light, I can get handheld super-telephoto shots which are of good quality (not pro level). I also bought an old Tamron 200-500 lens without image stabilization, thus making it lighter (and probably higher optical quality), so that I can hand hold the lens for some time with in-camera image stabilization.
The software given along with it is extremely bad - so bad that I had to uninstall it. It is full of bugs - takes huge time to load every time, and messes up the folders with lots of index files. Even the Pop Photo review, where I first learned of this camera mentioned that it processes the RAW files with more noise than JPEG. I have Adobe Lightroom which came bundled with the camera by the shop and am very happy to use it, now that I learn how to get great images from RAW with basic noise reduction.
The rating for the camera is 5 star, but for the bad manual and software, I had to reduce one star.
The Sony A77 ll has all the options you need to take full control of the image you are trying to present. Works great for sports photography, I believe it may the fastest camera available at 12fps. It also works well in video mode. I have really enjoyed using this camera and I am very happy with my purchase.

Sports and Wildlife yes!

My initial experience with this camera is quite good. Combined with the SAL70300G 70-300mm zoom I've had all positive experiences shooting wildlife: birds in flight, one of the most difficult things for autofocus to perform. I had also hoped the AF would perform well on a dark dance floor with the 50mm f1.8 lens. However I have not found this to be as secure in the low light as my Fuji cameras. Take this with a grain of salt as I have only had the camera for 1 week.

Very happy

I had done a lot of research before purchasing, so there were no surprises for me. One of the best resources is dxomark's sensor measurements. Also slrgear for lens reviews. It's everything I thought it would be and have very few wishes for improvement. The kit lens is great, but too soft in the corners for serious work requiring edge-to-edge sharpness.

Superbly flexible, get great results in a wide range of subject matter, lighting conditions and applications. I have used this for wildlife, sports and portrait work and get first class results every time.
Particularly like that the viewfinder pretty much displays the result you are going to get.... especially useful in low light and high contrast situations

Great camera poor owners manual

Great low noise capabilities over the A65. The autofocus is awesome!!! Face detection and automatic eye focus is an incredibly powerful feature you won't find on the Canikons.
Upgraded from Sony a580 to A77Mii in December. Overall, very happy with the purchase and performance. The EVF is a major improvement over the dim OVF of the a580. In fact, I found myself composing shots almost entirely with the LCD previously, though now have reverted to a more conventional method of using eyepiece focus/capture. Love seeing functions and their effect on the image within the viewfinder. Autofocus is very fast and generally reliable, though my unit has exhibited a propensity to back focus my entire Sony/Minolta/Sigma lens collection. I've used the AF Micro Adjust feature to correct in most cases, though with my Sony 50mm F1.4 the back focusing is actually outside AFMA parameters. In good light the camera produces images that are often flawless. Low light noise leaves a bit to be desired. Using flash indoors will help, though indoor sports photography difficult when requiring high shutter speed and higher ISO setting. Generally, I've learned to keep Auto ISO max-ed at 800 for all conditions. I've also decided to retain a580 as my backup camera since I found that to be a spectacular low light performer.

A great camera

The A77II is an amazing camera. It physically resembles the A77, but is better in almost all ways. Lock-on autofocus is a treat to use. The articulated view screen is so handy I am still discovering new ways to use it. Many of the controls are customizable, so the things I do the most often in the field are at my fingertips.
I do a lot of nature photography with fill-flash, using a powerful attached flash. The old flash shoe, used on the A77 and previous cameras, was rugged, strong and locked in place with a click. The new one does none of that. I had my flash slide off while shooting a football game this fall because it does not securely lock on. The shoe is filled with many wire connectors that allow you to hook up lots of things, but those wires are vulnerable to damage on the flash connector and the camera shoe, unless you are careful, and don’t toss them in your camera bag un-protected. If you take them off in a forest, for example, you either take the time to slide on the little plastic protectors, or take a chance on damaging the electrical contacts. And when you want to mount your flash, you must take the time to remove the tiny protectors and take the time to put them somewhere where you won’t lose them. Time and thought that should have been dedicated to your subject and the details of your shot.
This is the best camera I have ever used, and I have been using Minolta and then Sony cameras for 50 years. It excels in every way. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. Looking back at what I have written, most of my words are criticizing the one astounding bad design on the camera of my dreams, but for the serious photographer who uses an attached flash it is a surprising irritation on an otherwise great camera. That is why I gave it four stars instead of the five it otherwise deserves.
