Improvement to a great camera

Replaced an Alpha 77 and find it to be a worthwhile step up, although I do miss the GPS. Perhaps an app for gps tagging from the smartphone? I wish Sony was more proactive in getting RAW file support by major photo editing software providers (adobe, Apple, etc.) The recent link up with Phase One and its Capture One software is encouraging. There are several new autofocus modes - it would be nice to have more clarification on how they work, and what they can be expected to do. I love the tillable viewing screen - it is great for those awkward shots that would otherwise require one to be a contortionist.

Was debating between this and some of the lower end Sony/Nikon/Canon cameras. I borrowed a couple of those from friends, and they were okay, but the A77ii completely blew them out of the water for image quality, especially in low light. The first set of pics I took happened to be of my daughter's x-mas show. With the other cameras, under similar situations, I would either get some blur/soft focus, or get noise and artifacts in the black regions with the ISO cranked up. The A77ii, even just in Auto mode, provided crisp, clean, pictures with virtually no visible noise and no artifacts at all. Next, I shot some video of an interview, and, again, the image quality was fantastic. Comparable to prosumer dedicated video cameras. Shoots at up to 1080/60p. The only hiccup there was, on a long relatively steady shot, the camera lost and refocused once when panning from one subject to another, but at the same depth level. Could have been avoided by locking focus. On other shots, the focus tracked moving subjects really well. Overall, I was impressed. It won't replace a professional rig for video, but easily replace any prosumer level camcorder.
I also really like that the image stabilization is built into the body of the camera, as compared to, say, the Nikon. It makes additional lenses a cheaper purchase, and I never have to worry about whether or not the lens I'm buying has stabilization, which is sometimes hard to figure out with Nikon lenses. Another plus is that there is a whole array of used Minolta Maxxum lenses that are available for sale that use the same mount as the Sony A-Mount and that can be purchased for very very reasonable $. I have two of these from back when I owned a Maxxum 9000, and they work beautifully. The camera motor drives the autofocus on those lenses, so they are a bit noisier than current high-end Sony lenses, but they work great and focus smoothly, even though they are around 25 years old at this point.

The ILCA77M2Q is versatile, simple, capable and exciting. When I let the camera do all the work, the result is a beautiful shot. When I manipulate some of the variables, the result is as good as my manipulation. This camera is more than I will need as an amateur photographer, but camera enough to take me to a higher level than I have ever been before.
I got this to replace a Minolta film camera because of all of the A-Mount lenses that I owned. This was the first digital camera to come out with all of the feature that I was looking for. In many ways I am still learning how to use it, but it has not let me down in any way.
I finally wore out my Sony A55 after 6 years and wanted an great camera to help me grow as a photographer. Although I admit to being a self-professed Sony fanatic, this camera has exceeded my every expectation and I’ve only owned it for 3 weeks. The a-mount with interchangeable glass is a hands down great choice.

I've completed three male model for fashion shoots with this camera so far I've purchased a sigma 70 to 200 mm F2 .8 lens which is absolutely fantastic and on par with any Canon L glass comparables that I shot with in the past. I didn't buy the Sony version as it was $3000.00 versus the $1200.00 Sigma 70-200mm f2.8. I've shoot 2000 images and counting with no. Issues. The camera is a winner for Pro photographers and amateurs alike. There are so many improvement over the older A77 which I've shot with for 2+ years. Can't say enough about the object tracking high focus speed and improved facial recognition. Superb.

Best Camera for the Price

Super fast and accurate auto focus. Extremely low noise in JPEG mode, which is what I primarily use. Great finder! All the advantages a mirror provides for focus and exposure control without the mirror slap noise and vibration. Super sharp assortment of high-speed alpha mount lenses from Sony Zeiss, particularly the 24mm f/2 and the 135mm f/1.8. A ton of aftermarket lenses available in alpha mount. Great grip and balance! Nice assortment of Function control buttons. Love the Smart Tele-converter (particularly with non-zoom lenses), the Peaking focus assist feature, faster than most electronic first curtain shutter (have never noticed rolling shutter effects), and lens aberration compensation feature.
So glad that Sony retained the wonderful ergonomics of the original A77. The faster and more accurate focus tracking was the first thing that jumped out at me when I first picked up the camera. Still finding my way around the new camera and all the new features. Really like the programmability, and the high ISO performance looks to be almost one full stop better then its predecessor. On the negative side, I wish that Sony had retained the old hot shoe and GPS.
