Best APS-C DSLR / ILC camera. But the remote app!
on October 30, 2014
Posted by: LynnP
I bought this camera to replace my aging Sony DSLR-A700 (loved it). After visiting the camera store and comparing with equivalent offerings from Cannon and Nikon, I felt that Sony offered the best build quality and the A77M2 features blew the shutter off the competition, although I was unsure of the digital view finder.
After returning Home with my new camera, I took a few sample shots on the A77M2 and compared them with images taken with the same lens/settings on my A850 FF DSLR. The image detail from the A77M2 was noticeably better than the image details from the A850, so much so that I thought LightRoom was the problem, so I opened them up in Sony IDC, with the same results.
As for the digital viewfinder, although the image provided is bright and clear, I still prefer the crisp image clarity of an optical viewfinder, however the additional features that the digital viewfinder provides, such as the image in the viewfinder is adjusted as you change camera settings, Focus Assist (digitally zooms in for focus check), in manual focus mode you can set the edges of in-focus areas to be highlighted, and many, many more features is more than enough to make me a digital viewfinder convert.
And then their is the Remote Camera app!!!
I really like the idea of being able to remotely control the camera via, WIFI and not needing any wired shutter release. BUT, I find the remote camera app very frustrating, as the app only provides shutter release functionality and image settings cannot be adjusted on the smart phone app, or on the camera when the phone and camera are sync'd.
This is the process for using the app.
-Turn on the phone app
-on the camera, enable WIFI control
-compose shot
-oops! I didn't focus where I intended
-on camera, disengage the WIFI control
-recompose image and set correct focus
-Turn on the phone app
-on the camera, enable WIFI control
-actuate shutter by remote control app
-ok I want to change the aperture, shutter speed, and white balance.
-Turn on the phone app
-on the camera, enable WIFI control
-recompose image and set correct focus
-actuate shutter by remote control app
See how frustrating using the WIFI Remote Camera app can be!!!
However in video mode, you can set focus.
I am begging Sony to give the Remote Camera App more functionality, or at least update the firmware to allow me to change settings via. camera, while the camera and phone are sync'd.
I give the app 1 star.
Other than the frustrations with the smartphone app, this camera is excellent, I highly recommend the Sony A77M2 !!!+!

No 1 APS-C sensor size camera with great AF
on April 23, 2015

I've owned Sony A77M2 for half year now. I have to say that I did a lot of research prior to make my decision and I was having on my mind Nikon D7100 and Canon 70D until I've seen this one... And I have to say I'm definitely satisfied with it's performance so far. Although as a beginner in this field I'm still exploring it's endless possibilities.
Great AF, 12 fps in burst mode nails every moment between moments and delivers great over 90% in focus photos.
I've done also some footage with it and have to say that I'm lovin' it's LCD screen that you can shift in literally every direction. However, could be LCD touch... I hope that maybe in future Sony will consider to improve this.

One of the Best APS-C Cameras on the Market

The Sony A77 II is close to (if not at) the top of the full-size APS-C DSLR market. It's focusing speed, object tracking, metering, and more, are class-leading. I enjoyed using it but have since decided to go all-ILCE (mirrorless) so I sold mine and now use the Sony A7m2 and and Sony A6000.

Ready to go right out of the box. Able to use other Sony equipment with it - battery, charger, wireless remote, lens, etc. Nice articulation in LCD screen. Great for multiple situations. Still has panorama feature which most cameras don't have. Just wish the overall weight was a bit lighter. Camera is well built, excellent hand grip, weather sealed.

Great Camera

The camera is great well balanced and easy to operate once you learn the functions. Do not expect to learn much from the Sony documentation. Had to find a book from someone who knew all the ins and outs of the camera. especially the hidden functions.

I've had it since October 2014, so didn't use it much over the winter but looking forward to the warmer weather and more shooting opportunities. This is a keeper which I'll grow into. This camera has so many adjustments, it will take me some time to learn all of them, but you can use one of the Auto settings and get great shots without much thought. One thing is clear, this camera is highly customizable and I like the 3 custom settings on the mode dial. The menu system is pretty easy to go through too and, for all the available options, I think its laid out pretty well. Use the viewfinder most of the time, but the LCD works well too. Like the info screen on top and the two control wheels. The camera itself is really not big at all and fairly light, but its the lens that will add to the size and weight. I wanted a single solution lens so have the Tamron 16-300mm mounted, which is a nice match for the camera.
Downsides? Well, it would certainly be nice if they could shave some more ounces off; the size is just right and feels good in my hands. The LCD is articulated, which is great for low-level compositions, but I'm still getting used to it; it swings out and up, and the screen swivels, but proximity to the camera body sometimes impedes the swiveling; I like the Canon arrangement better. Oh, and I think the ISO should be displayed on the top LCD, its a critical part of the exposure triangle, for pete's sake!

Alpha-77M2
on November 13, 2014

I own an Alpha-55, and got the Alpha-77 to improve my ability to use a higher ISO range. The Alpha-77 is a great improvement, giving clean images up to at least ISO 3200. It also has a much wider manual ISO selection than the 55. The buttons are in familiar places, but the menu is much improved. The 77 is more substantially constructed, the shutter is a dream, and I like the heavy duty 16-50mm lens a lot. The only thing I don't like a LOT better than the Alpha-55 is the separate little door for the memory chip...I thought the Alpha-55 plan that had both the battery & the chip in the same compartment was better.
