We've been using this radar for about 2 years now and my boyfriend and I LOVE it. It has long distance range to let you know way ahead of time that there is cop or a speed cam near by. We plan to get another one for our other car here shortly. I would highly recommend this to everybody. It's simple, easy to use, and works GREAT!
What's great about it: Easy to use, Simple, and Has good range

I had a 500 mile road trip for work so I picked one of these up after researching detectors. I've had Valentine 1's in the past but the New escort live was really intriguing. Went to my local store and the shelf marketing material reflected the 8500x50 Black model which was released Q3 of 2011. I used it on my trip, picked up 8-10 traps on my trip. In some cases the instant on barrages would have been too late if I was speeding. When I returned I called Escort and they verified that it was not the Black model. The sensitivity is supposed to be greatly improved in the Black model so I returned it.

I recently purchased this unit as my trusty Beltronics Vector 965 just randomly failed on a car trip (it was 1.5 yrs old). Beltronics wanted 60$ and me to pay shipping to them. For a product that was expensive and is so vital to me (I'm a driver - 8 sets of tires in 4 yrs and enjoy every moment) it needs to work. I really like the 8500 - it's only picking up 1/2 of the false alerts the other unit did. I can't tell on the range - seems a little less so far but that may be that I'm basing that on false alert areas not real radar. I love the power cord and option to run completely dark! Suction cups are not an issue. Simply get an alcohol wipe and wipe the cups then the window and you're good to go. I think heat can very much be an issue with these units - although for the money and the environment they are designed for (e.g. hot car interior) they should be designed to NOT have problems.. That said I will be VERY careful with the new unit. And you should Always get the best buy warranty on something like this - I did. I will not be stuck with another failed expensive detector again.. One other thing - Beltronics / Escort factory warranty is a joke - they will not warranty anything unless you buy it direct from them..
What's great about it: Very good options and performance / smart power cord and case incl
What's not so great: Escort is owned by Beltronics and they do not back their products

This by far is the best radar detector I have ever owned. The warning distance is longer than detectors that i have owned before even by this maker. It does not have an annoying alert, very good feature.
What's great about it: Has excellent distance detection. Alert is not disturbing as in too loud or irritating. Everything is as advertised. b

I had to replace an old Beltronics V940 that had finally died after years of faithful service. Good Radar detectors don't come cheap. I had been looking at the more expensive GPS models because that is a great feature to eliminate false signals. However I succumbed to a great deal at BB for the 8500 X50 @$199.95 deal of the day. This unit was easy to setup and had exceptional range only issue was it was so sensitive to false signals. I went back to Best Buy and picked up the companion Escort - Radar Detector Smart Cord. For $35 this added not only the GPS type function of ignoring the false signals based on location but it also added the Escort Live functionality, it's almost an unfair advantage to the driver now. By putting these two together you get all the features of the $449+ detector for $200 less.

It's a great product. I always wondered about spending the money for this well known brand. I could say it is worth the money. I have had other detectors for about 100 dollars less and thought it was marginal. But, I could say I'm glad to have spend the extra for this radar detector. It's easy to use and customized to what your preference. As long you take a little time to read the manual. Also, the case it comes with is great to store your unit. The only bad thing is the suction cups it comes with. It's terrible. For the amount of money I paid for the detector I wouldn't even thought the suction cups would be a concern. I had to replace the suctions cups within the first month. I was really surprise. The people of Escort shouldn't have over looked that simple detail!
What's great about it: ample of warning, ease to customize

Overall a decent radar detector with decent range and sensitivity. There are some false signals that occur due to the increased sensitivity. You will need to adjust your driving habits, but I've have no situations where the radar location was not detected with some warning.
What's great about it: Ease of use, improved range
What's not so great: A little pricey, more dimmer setting would be nice
