Once I realized that I mainly used black and white, and that my old brother color MFC was wearing out (after many years) I decided to try this one out. The price was right, the print quality is great, and the few quirks that irritated me about ye olde MFC had been fixed and radically improved.
So far, I am pleased. It is fast, it is trouble free, and the scanner was surprisingly fast. My dedicated scanner cannot deal with textbooks, which I often need to scan. This does. I haven't sent a paper fax in 5 yrs, so I cannot rate that, but the rest of the functions are great.
One minor quibble, the initial toner went fairly fast, but the 660 high capacity cartridge exceeds expectations. I am very pleased and would recommend this to any small company, small law firm, or individual who has to print a lot. I especially like the two-sided scanning and printing functions.

I really like this machine except one thing. When I put my invoices in, with our company name printed on them, the ink from the preprinted invoice transfers on the invoice half way down so I have to use my other printer for invoices. If I didn't have 2 printers I would have needed to send it back.

I have had many expensive Ink Jets, and they all drink ink too fast. And way too expensive to constantly replace them. I got the Brother Laser, per it was very conservative with ink. It was also the only one I could find that can do multiple copies from top loader. And, it can "scan" anything to my computer. The scanning feature is not in many other lasers . Most printers can copy photo and documents. But, not scan photos and document. That really limits me, per I do not ever use the old fashion faxing documents, which are blurry and limited anyway. Also, customer Service with this company is EXCELLENT. They will help you set it up, and be very patient with you on the phone. Best customer service representatives that I have ever talked to.

works very well scanning, copying, faxing and printing. the only thing I dislike about the printer when you start to print, receive a fax the machine sound like a airplane on takeoff. I previously had a brother machine that was older that did not make this sound if the machine was available I would have replaced it with the same machine.

A little disappointed

After 13 years my old MFC-9700 finally gave up the ghost. It was like a member of the family. Totally reliable to the end. Of course, I was going to replace it with another Brother mfc. I finally chose a MFC-L2740DW.
I am a proud Apple user and while Brother's Apple support was always a little sparse (next to the voluminous Windows support) it was always enough to get the job done.
When I set up my new MFC-L2740DW, I wanted to go wireless. The old printer's ethernet cable I previously used was easily accessible but I wanted to try wireless. BIG MISTAKE.
My home network has an Apple time machine for the router/wifi/backup. That device has always functioned well with my HP photo color printer - which has worked flawlessly IN WIRELESS MODE for 2 years.
Despite multiple attempts, following every scrap of on-line help from Brother, as well as an exhaustive internet search of other Apple usere, I HAVE COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE MFC-L2740DW SIMPLY WILL NOT FUNCTION WIRELESSLY WITH MY APPLE TIME MACHINE. It seems that the Brother device "falls asleep" when its not printing and will not "Wake up" to print without a device power toggle. (There is no way to prevent it from "sleeping" for more than 50 minutes.)
Frustrated, with nearly a week of failures, I reconfigured my new Brother printer to use an ethernet connection. As soon as I connected with my ethernet cable, my new MFC printer began to work flawlessly and after a month in WIRED ETHERNET MODE appears to be as reliable as my old one had been.
FINAL ANALYSIS, BROTHER MFC-L2740DW works great as a wired printer but if you use an Apple Time machine for your router/Wifi, approach wireless connection with caution.

I had some difficulty setting up this printer, but Brother's support staff was superb. Now that it is fully functioning, I am very happy with it. It is much smaller than my previous Brother Multifunction printer, which is still working well after many years but has been moved to my other home. The MFC-L2740DW does a nice job printing, is fast, and will do back-to-back printing very easily. My only disappointment is that I can put only one envelope at a time in the envelope slot.

This unit replaced my brother mfc7860 and is an equivalent, but with a better user interface. Overall, I am please with this but would like to see better performance when it comes to printing envelopes...am getting 7 nbr 10 envelopes per 2 minutes (mailing address and return address with a graphic); issue appears to be just waiting for the buffer to reload after the last 2 envelopes have printed. Ho hum.
