The greatest Sc-Fi of all time.

-----------2001: A Space Odyssey is one of Stanley Kubrick's greatest films and is easily one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time. It is my personal favorite because of its imagery. The story is well-thought out and compelling, but having said that, it may not be for everyone. I have showed this film to most of my friends, and of them, only some liked it and none loved it as much as I do. They mostly claimed that the story was too slow for their tastes. This is only magnified by the lack of dialogue during most of the scenes. While I find this fascinating, it may turn some off to this movie.
-----------As far as the actual DVD is concerned, the special features are more than adequate. Everything looks pretty good in its remastered form. The audio is up to par and the image quality is good considering when the film was originally shot. For any film geek such as myself, the documentary on the making of the film and the audio commentary for the feature film are very interesting, although it's too bad Kubrick wasn't around to add his own commentary. Lastly, the featurettes were also worth watching.
-----------All in all, I recommend this film to anybody who thinks they can keep themselves interested in the absence of dialogue. It is one of my favorite films of all time.
What's great about it: Amazing cinematography, stunning imagery, awesome special features.
What's not so great: Some may find the story uninteresting.

When asked by friends what my favorite film of all time is I usually answer with two films...I tell them what movie I enjoy watching the most (which is John Carpenter's: Big Trouble in Little China), but then I also tell them that I truly believe, in terms of overall filmmaking, Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey' is in my opinion the best film of all time. The only words I can use to describe this film are 'utterly astonishing.' Don't miss seeing this film, especially on this nicely done special edition.

Enterainment Weekly rightfully proclaimed this Kubrick film "the grandest of all science fiction movies."
This movie involves a mysterious black monolith which first appeared on Earth in the early days of humanity. There is then a fast-forward to the titular year, in which a similar object is found on the moon. This leads to a group of 5 astronauts (3 of which are in suspended animation) being sent to Jupiter, where a transmission from the monolith is being directed. Their ship, Discovery I (which obviously inspired the Star Destroyers seen in Star Wars) is controlled by a supercomputer known as HAL (memorably voiced by Douglas Rain) who proceeds to act unpredicably towards his(?) human compatriots en route.
What occurs afterward can't be put into mere words. This is one film which must be seen to be comprehended, and, even then, its unprecedented method of narrative drive may leave some viewers confused. This is not a film that meets the viewing audience halfway, as it were. Much is left to the imagination, which is part of the genius of Kubrick.
The fact that real-life astronauts have claimed that being in space is just like 2001 is proof of the indelible mark the film has left on cinema.
What's great about it: a breakthough in SFX and storytelling
What's not so great: the pace of the film is not for all tastes

Stanley Kubrick masterpiece creation of the Arthur C Clarke book! Kubrick broke new ground in creating a Sci-Fi that raised the bar for the Genre. It has stood the test of time, which was 50 years ago. The picture quality in 4K Ultra is amazing. The sets and scenes were masterfully shot. Re-watch this movie, and enjoy it even more at home!

I would give this film 20 stars if I could. After multiple delays, this 4K UHD bluy ray arrived 16-December. My daughter and I are huge Kurbick fans and given the delays getting this shipment, we eagerly anticipated watching this movie on our 75 inch 4K Oled TV. I was afraid I was going to be disappointed with the transfer given the anticipation......but boy was I wrong. The film is iconic....We all know that....but I must say, this 4K transfer is one of the best transfers I have even seen. Kubrick's masterpiece has never looked this good.. Simply amazing....the clarity, the color the sound... The steelbook is cool no doubt but with this movie who cares about the case, right? What is inside the steelbook is what is important here and this one is glorious....Get this movie, watch it, think about it...and enjoy this classic movie in 4K glory. AMAZING !!!!

I have owned the previous versions of 2001, including the remastered version, but NEVER have I ever seen or heard a reproduction as perfect as on Blu-Ray!
I will admit that, in the beginning, I was skeptical of an industry that said that movies could be so much better on this technology....but I was wrong.
Blu-Ray is flat out....the best!

Still amazed at the Cinematography from a movie made 42 years ago. Add to that, a haunting soundtrack and you have an iconic film destined to be a classic for another 40 years. Blue-Ray only enhances the vision that Stanley Kubrick wanted to convey.
What's great about it: a cult classic
What's not so great: long movie
