CALIBRATION ROCKS!!!

When I purchased my Samsung 50 inch 1080P Plasma TV, I was not sure about the calibration cost... It seemed like a lot at the time. But I took a chance on it and got it. After a few months, the geek squad comes out to your house and hooks a lap top to your PC. They go into the TV's BIOS and reconfigure everythign to help your TV run better, look better and to accomodated TV's location and lighting. Wow. I was really impressed with what they did. My installer named Guy, told me what he was doing every step of the way. The bottom line: your TV runs a lot better, less heat. Your TV really pops the colors out a lot more, you just to see it to believe it. If you are in the middle on this service, I hope this review sways you to get it. I did and I love it! Geek Squad rocks!
What's great about it: your TV will run and look a lot better
What's not so great: The intial cost, but the service you get out weighs it
I would recommend this to a friend!

After reading some of the reviews on calibration of the TV I was apprehensive. I needn't have been. The before was fairly good, the after was incredible. The tech, Randy, who came to my house was knowledgeable, on time, courteous, and professional. I can't say enough nice things about the young man. Be aware that you need to let your TV run at least a hundred hours prior to calibration. I just turned it on, muted it, and let it run. The picture improved on its own as it ran. Then Randy came and the difference was amazing. He spent a close to 2 hours setting everything up. I had purchased a Samsung UN55HU8550. It was well worth the purchase of the calibration to get everything out of the TV. I had my doubts about the benefits, but I highly recommend the calibration (and Randy if you live in NE Georgia). I do most tech things myself and am fairly good at installing and maintaining things myself. This is something I could not have done. Not in a million years. By the way, I am not usually this effusive in my reviews.

Better Picture for a longer life

The technician arrived on time to the minute and finished calibration within an hour. My wife and I immediately noticed colors we had not seen before, especially blues,lavenders, purples and maroons. Dark browns became easily distinguishable from blacks. Intense colors no longer bleed. The backlight setting is now 4 rather than 10, producing noticeably less heat from the screen. Calibration only needs to be performed once so the cost is relatively small over the life of the TV.
What's great about it: Natural colors, more subtle variations in color
What's not so great: I should have done it sooner

The person was helpful but I do not recommend getting your TV calibrated.
Movie mode is not good on a samsung TV. The geek squad technician put my settings on movie mode and the picture looked green and was not bright at all. I do not use dynamic mode when I set the TV to my liking I use Standard, Dynamic can be too bright and decrease the life of your TV. I recommend getting a calibration DVD, reading forums on the web or just set your TV to how you like it. Calibrating your TV is over-rated
What's great about it: Best Buy has good service
What's not so great: Getting a TV calibration
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

The Agent was very nice and polite, asked a few basic questions, made sure the lighting in the room at the time of the calibration was the same as when we usually watch the TV, hooked up the equipment ($10,000 worth of calibration equipment... NOT a spyder calibration), asked me a few questions about which settings looked better to me as he was calibrating it (he calibrated 2 inputs, the cable box input and Wii input), finished up about 45 minutes later, checked several channels with me to make sure it was satisfactory, then told me what he had found (my TV was set from the factory to show 23% more blue!). He also sent me an e-mail with all the settings incase someone changes them.
I had this done to both of my TVs, a 50' 1080p Hitachi plasma and a 42" 720p Panasonic plasma. Both run much cooler now (which I'm sure will extend the life of both), they use less electricity (so the service will pay for itself in just a few months), and the picture looks so much better and more realistic! I can't even describe how much more realistic the picture looks! Everyone who comes over now wants to know what I did to make it look so good! Why spend so much money on the TV and not get the best picture out of it?! The calibration is a MUST HAVE!
What's great about it: More realistic picture, TV running cooler, uses less electricity!
What's not so great: nothing!
I would recommend this to a friend!

Significant Difference

Like several other reviewers I was sceptical about adding this cost to the price of my new TV, a 46" Samsung LCD. I had however read some comments in Consumer Reports suggesting that this was a worthwhile service, so I went ahead and purchased the calibration. Upon the recommendation of the saleman, I "worn-in" the TV for about 100 hours before scheduling the califbration, which was performed this morning. All I can say is I am glad I did. I thought the picture was excellent before the service, but it is AWESOME now. Also, the reduction in heat near the screen was very noticeable. I had noticed my electric bill was higher during the period I was doing the "burn-in", so hopefully some of the cost of the calibration will be offset by savings on the electric bill, although I think the service is justified by the picture improvement alone. For those reviewers who have had a bad experience with their calibrations, I suspect the problem lies with the person doing the calibration and not the calibration itself. Done properly, calibration makes a significant difference.
What's great about it: Awesome picture; less heat given off
What's not so great: Nothing

Lousy service

Technician put no effort in finding my residence, blew me off for the next job. If he puts this lack of effort into the job then I guess he doesn't care about good customer service. Not very happy with everyone above him. Got hung up on twice and was on hold for close to an hour and half.
What's great about it: nothing

Patrick W is my geek squad guy in Rockford IL
He is kind, patient, efficient and excellent at his job.
I am so very happy I had my new Samsung LCD TV calibrated. The difference is amazing (and I already loved my picture). The heat generated by my TV is reduced by at least 50%.
Patrick was very precise in his calibration, making sure it was perfect. He explained the process and the benefits as he went along.
My whole experience has been perfect. I have never been so satisfied w/ any purchase in my life.
In fact, after all my raving, my sister and brother in law went to the Best Buy in Elgin IL and bought the exact same TV, Sound Bar and installation.
I can't say enough good things about Patrick and the results of his work.
I am very very happy
What's great about it: Heat reduction, 200% picture improvement
What's not so great: cost
I would recommend this to a friend!
