Its measured yet stylish direction and layered, grounded performances transcend its sci-fi premise to examine the moral and emotional dilemmas that go hand in hand with the unstoppable progress of technology. It’s not hard to imagine that, had Hitchcock written a script that was directed by Kubrick, this might have been the result.

This underrated, entertaining, and thought provoking film from the late 90s features strong performances by Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, and Jude Law. The troubling futuristic world is different than our own, but just close enough to be believable. The new 4K transfer is gorgeous—filmic and textured. The steel book packaging is handsome. Great purchase.
