Great Features!

I bought my first Canon in 1979, an A-1 and then I bought a second one, also an A-1. I went digital with a Rebel T-5 in 2016 to shoot a wedding, then upgraded it to a 7D Mark II in 2017. I enjoy outdoor land & waterscapes, and wildlife photography, but wanted to go full frame and mirrorless. I looked at the new EOS R, but really missed the flexible functionality in manual mode offered by the EOS 7D Mark II; by programming a back-button to allow selection of specific and multiple AF points and sections, it's easy to switch from a single to multiple while following a bird in flight! I actually like the flexibility of this camera (7D Mark II) so much that I just bought a second one.
Don't get me wrong, this camera is not perfect and I would like the noise level worked on; It gets progressively noisy at ISO's above about 1000, so much that I rarely try to shoot above 400-800 ISO and hate going above 1000-1200 ISO. I guess if I turned in a wish list, it would be for the EOS 7D Mark II to come out with a full frame, 50 MP sensor, greatly reduced noise levels, Mirrorless, with a movable back-screen, and keep all the 7D Mark II buttons and their locations, and increased bracket exposures to 11 exposures. Thank you John C. Minnesota

Battery drain is unacceptable
on April 8, 2015

The camera shows better IQ than the 7D (although noise-wise no more than 2/3 of a stop), although no comparison with full frame of course. It is fast and accurate. But, the battery drain is ridiculous! Even when camera is off (with GPS disabled), during 3 days in backpack the battery drains completely. During shooting it lasts for ~700 raw shots as declared. But draining when off? I have to remove battery from the camera every time which will kill the door and gasket soon (all plastic). But there is no sense to keep it in as it will be flat in a few days. Some people suggest as the reason poor battery quality (not my case, I tried 4 different, same result), or 3-party lenses attached (again, not my case), or demanding GPS or viewfinder that drain the battery even when camera is off. Whatever it is, too bad!

Near perfect camera

Being a full frame camera guy (1D X, 5D mark III currently), I purchased this camera for the flexibility of having the 1.6x option without resorting to a teleconverter. Being familiar with the 5Dm3 makes using this camera a piece of cake. Canon has added additional features that should be in the full frame line (dual pixel sensor, 65-pt AF, bulb and time lapse timers, up to 4fps silent shooting, GPS, etc...). The added features make this a nearly perfect all around general purpose camera. It is like the Swiss Army knife of cameras! Unfortunately Canon still hasn't come up with sensor technology to match the level of this camera. If you are a RAW shooter, the noise levels and limited dynamic range of the sensor detract from an otherwise fantastic camera.

7D Mark II: A lot of camera to play with
on July 21, 2018

I've had the 7D Mark II for a couple years now. I'm 90% satisfied with this camera. I mostly shoot surfers from the water's edge; hand held. I use a Canon 100-400 L Series lens and get good results/image clarity in daylight shooting MRAW. The only drawback is that lower light situations, such as early morning surfing just before the sun peaks out, or on overcast days, I seem to get a lesser quality result. Might be due to me shooting a moving subject and having to set a higher ISO than 1000.

EOS 7D Mark II

The Canon 7D Mark II seems to be living up to its good reputation as a highly qualified sports camera. Apparently well thought out, it offers a number of ways to capture action shots based on the type of sport. If there is any suggestion on my part, it would be to have more online videos or "cheat sheets" that would show camera settings for C1 Sports, C2 Birding; C3 Landscapes. Instead we are left to fumble a bit, wondering if we got it right even though we are professional photographers. Just a thought about a great camera.

Great Camera, But.......

Bought the 7DII for the capabilities that my 6D, also a fine camera, lacks. Although I am very impressed with the features and performance of the 7DII, I was forced to send it back for exchange because of inconsistent focus. Using both a zoom (EF100-400 L II) and a prime (EF35mm F/1.4 L) I just could not get proper focus much of the time. No problem with the 6D on the same lenses. I really like the feel and function of the 7DII and I believe, based on other reviews, that this is an isolated incident. Can't wait to get the exchange completed. One complaint about the features: I would like to be able to record JPEG and RAW on separate cards but see no way to do so. Minor point really. Except for the focus issue, I am very pleased with the camera.

Great camera but needs a couple of improvements

I use this camera primarily for wildlife photography and some real estate photography (with the EF-S 10-22 attached). It does a great job with both, but I'd like to see two improvements. First, a firmware update that gives the option of a 7-bracket exposure for in-camera HDR. Three exposures just isn't enough when shooting a high-dynamic scene. Second, the GPS should disable automatically when the camera's power switch is moved to the OFF position. Even with the camera off, the GPS continues to operate in the background and drain the battery (weird, I know). Other than these two suggested improvements, it's a great camera!

Excellent Overall Performance

I have only used this camera in my film class in High School, but I am a good photographer that is familiar with high-end brand cameras, including a (very) old Canon film camera and I know what to look for. This camera has so many more features in it than do most professional lineups, and the images were way better than I had expected. From the accurate colors of the Live View to the ability to record 60fps in Full HD, Canon has sure strove to keep up their reputation of making the best cameras available.
