Disappointed

I purchased this a couple of years ago and have had problem after problem with it not working correctly. I have sent it in to be fixed yet the problems continue. I have backup Canon Rebel t1i and continue to use that more often and it works fantastic. I am really disappointed in the 70D. The weight of it and the reliability, and problems I have are really disappointing.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Awesome camera

I purchased the 70D a few weeks ago. Although there are more features and settings than the average person will ever use, they are easy to set up and use. I purchased it with the 18-135 mm kit. The lens is sharp at all focal lengths. Pictures shot at night at ISO 2000 showed no graininess. Flash pictures were perfectly exposed and sharp. Auto focus is fast and quiet. Battery life appears to be excellent so far. If you're moving up from a point and shoot, don't be upset with the heavier camera because it is well balanced and solid. The camera is a pleasure to use and surpasses my expectations. A great choice!

Could be better!

If they just make this camera a little better, it would have been perfect for me. We all know that no single camera is perfect. It all depend on what you need it for. For the professionals, they know what they need and they can spend the money because they make money with it. For the most of us, we need to have a camera that can do just about everything and do everything well. I know I will be changing to a different camera soon because this may not be the right camera for me.
What does Canon need to improve on this model to make it perfect for most of us? 1. Better focus 2. Better high ISO performance.
I have been taking classes to improve my photography for the past 3 years and I believe my pictures are very good now. Finally decided to use Canon 70D and was hoping this would be the right camera for me - wrong - but almost. With proper lighting condition, this camera is fine, and so was my previous camera. I am more critical in low light and indoor sport. I use the camera for figure skating, cheer, basketball, football, marching band, and dance recitals. Figure skating and Dance recitals are the 2 that are most difficult because of the low light / changing light condition and fast movement (especially when spinning or axel jumps. Fast frame rate is not as important as fast shutter speed and low light performance. I use fast lenses so lens is not the issue here.
I shoot everything in Manual mode. I shoot through view finder so I can track the subject better. All the control on the camera works well for me except WB. I hate to go through the menu to change WB. To overcome that, I shoot both raw and jpg if WB becomes a problem. Other than that, the controls and features are fine.
The problem with this camera is focus and noise at high ISO. I typically keep the ISO at 800 or below if I can. Above 1600 the image is just not acceptable to me. I get about 40% sharp image so its a hit or miss kind of thing with this camera. I believe this camera has focusing issue. Overall, this is a good camera. I use it for trips and day time event and the pictures are fine, but still do not give you the crispy sharp image. If you do not need to shoot at fast moving object at low light, you will be fine with this camera. I have adjusted the settings and also went to Canon to see what else I can do to improve the sharpness I am looking for, so I know its not caused my me. Soft focus is an issue even shooting still object on tripod sometimes.
I also used 5Dm3 that one of my friend own and used in all those events. 5Dm3 give me sharper image and better high ISO performance. But the camera buffer fills up faster so if you take a lot of shot, you will start to miss shots pretty soon. That did not work for me either.
Anyway, my next step is either to try 7Dm2 or switch to another brand, but I have already purchased several 2.8, 1.8, and 1.2 lenses.
I believe this is a good well rounded camera that just has a few flaws. I am looking for crispy sharp images which I am not getting from this camera. Hopefully Canon can find a solution to that.

Great camera for stills and video.

I bought this camera with a Pro-10 printer bundle deal Nov. 2013. It's quite an improvement over the 60D (See my review of 60D) feature wise. Image quality is a little better but the 19 point AF and dual pixel AF is a big improvement. Then throw in 7 frames a second and you have a nice camera for wildlife and sports. It has a flip out screen like the 60D but it's a touch screen. This is more useful than you might think. I'll explain.... Touch a point on the screen in live view to focus on it and when shooting video you can do this and rack focus between far and near objects very smoothly and silently when using the new STM lenses. Touch Shutter is another feature that I really like and use. Basically you just touch the screen to focus and trip the shutter or just trip the shutter if you are focussing manually. This can be very handy if using a tripod or propped on something to minimizing camera shake without having to use the self timer or remote. It's takes only a very very light touch and you can increase the touch sensitivity in the menu. The 7D MKII cannot do this and a few other things that require a touch screen and is why I won't be upgrading to it. It's that useful to me. Lots of RAW and jpg options. Has the usual Canon Scene menu and presets plus make your own. You can repurpose the most of the buttons on the back. Multiple exposure and in body HDR are options the 60D lacks. The some buttons on the back are in different locations than the 60D. The mode select knob doesn't have the scene selections like the 60D and doesn't stop at the ends either. The selector wheel at the top of the grip and the one on the back are quieter than the 60D also. Likely because of video use. It has WiFi which can be very useful for remote controlling the camera and downloading and viewing photos. There are lots of WiFi options but it can be a bit confusing to first set up. You can have multiple set ups for different devices.... I think. I'm pretty sure you can.. ;-) And autofocus micro adjustment for up to 20 lenses. This only applies to the 19 point AF and not to the DPAF.

Wait on purchasing until bugs are fixed

This well-built camera following the 7D, with its breakthrough technology sensor, needs bugs fixed before I recommend anyone buying it. The autofocus system does not work as well as older camera models and the microadjustment tool does not help. The focus issue is a shame since Canon is known for its crisp, sharp images. The camera also has high noise levels and problems working at low ISO levels.
Being a professional, I was very disappointed in the performance of this camera released by Canon to the public. I hope that a firmware upgrade might resolve some of these issues
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality, noisy, poor focusing
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Terrific Camera

First off, I am new to DSLR camera's but, I do have considerable experience with "point and shoot" and video camera's of various makes and models. I am impressed with the quality of this camera and the 18-135 and 50-250 IS STM lenses; along with the relative ease of learning to use these systems I have found it easy to produce wonderful, clear pictures even under the stresses of a new learning curve. I have done much research and settled on the 70D mainly for the fully articulated LCD and professional setting options as I didn't want a point and shoot version of the dslr. With less than 1000 shots taken; I am mostly on Manual controls with an occasional use of AV and TV settings. This is not to toot my own horn but to convey the ease at which this camera makes it possible to learn the concepts of photography. I love the fully articulated LCD and that it is a touch screen adds to its convenience of use. I find the over all lay out of all the function buttons convenient and easy to learn and to use. I love this camera and even with my limited experience; I can't be more pleased with the quality photos I can produce with it; and that I really didn't need to rely on the Auto function for good photos is a major plus. I think this is a terrific mid level camera for the enthusiast moving up possibly on their way to a Full Frame DSLR system. I have shot a limited amount of video; and it has very good clarity but at this point I have not shot enough to comment on this aspect of this camera.

take mostly sports shots. At first it worked ok but now the active shots are all soft and not sharp at all. I have the 100-400 and several other canon lenses and they work well on other cameras. Because of my investment I must stay with Canon but wish I could move on to something else. Will probably try the 80d to see if it is any better.

Outstanding Value

While not a full magnesium body chasis, the build quality and feel is outstanding. For this price the many features are superb, including the touch screen. Used with the kit 18-135 lens, very happy. With the EF 70-200 L II IS USM, incredibly fast and accurate. Focusing with the live view video is best in class with either lens. Can't wait to try with the 100mm macro lens. Any complaints you might read online regarding the still quality are unfounded when you use good glass. This new camera and dual pixel technology is going to be the forerunner of much greater things to come from Canon. Invest in good glass and let the camera do its magic. Cons: Missing dual card slot and audio mic input for avid video shooters. GPS also a miss.
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings, needs a dual memory card slot, no audio mic input, no gps, not full magnesium alloy body
I would recommend this to a friend!
