Why this camera works for me!

I have a condition called "essential mixed tremors" which previously forced me to shoot only with a tripod and a remote shutter release. Hand held shots with my Canon 50D were always very soft or even blurry. High ISO settings helped but left the image grainy and off tone and still not tack sharp. I purchased an L lens with Image Stabilization and this helped if I shot in AI Servo mode. I was about to give up on photography when I read the reviews on the Canon EOS 70D. They led me to believe that this camera might allow me to shoot fast enough in normal light situations to hand hold and obtain sharp images. I bought the 70D and have tested it indoors in rather low light situations, outdoors on a gloomy day, and outdoors in normal late afternoon light. I hand held the indoor shots at 1200 ISO with tack sharp results. I hand held all shots outdoors varying the ISO from 800 to 1600. The lower ISOs produced sharp results. The higher ISOs produced tack sharp results. If anyone has a similar condition, this camera, the EOS 70D, is definitely the GAME CHANGER!!! Thank you Canon!!!!
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, ability to shoot high isos with tack sharp results
Cons: there are no cons

Loved it, Until.......

If I had written this review two months ago, I would have given it 5 stars. I loved this camera. I primarily use it for quick shoots and video self tape auditions. It worked like a charm for 3 years. 2 days ago it happened to me like so many others. The camera locked up and went dead. Canon has known about this mother board problem for a while and they refuse to fix it. Instead of paying 400 dollars to fix this camera, I am putting that towards a nikon. I was such a fan for so long but lack of customer service is a deal breaker. This makes me very sad.

Does Multiple Things Well

I have been a professional for a few years now and I started on the 7D and then upgraded to the 6D. In that upgrade, I lost fps to gain image quality and it worked out all right in most shooting situations. I started to work with a lot of sports and the 6D wasn't cutting it as I was losing a lot with 4.5 fps. I also shoot documentaries for my clients. I needed a camera that could do several things well and the 70D is the camera that helps me do it on a budget. I could only afford one camera body to do both excellent video as well as photos in a sports environment. Granted I use the best glass available (70-200 2.8 II, 16-35 2.8.II, 24-105 f4, 135 f2, etc) the images out of the 70D rival that of the 6D when shooting sports and I am getting 7fps.
Video is where the 70D has really proven its worth. I needed a B-cam on interviews as well as low-light setups, and the camera performs well along side the XF100. (I do need to grade both, but when its done, they work) I accomplish two very demanding and different jobs with one camera. There is aliasing and moire, but you just have to be mindful of that when planning a shoot. While not specifically an action camera (no AF point expansion, custom mode saves, etc) It will get the job done every time. Other than work that specifically needs full-frame, I find myself going to the 70D more often than the 6D. It does everything I need it to and more.
Pros: good battery life, excellent image quality, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings

Nice T3i Upgrade !!

I upgraded to the 70D from the T3i. It's a much more advanced camera, with more features which I found pretty easy to use. Now I'm not a pro or anything, just a guy who loves taking pictures of family, friends, my pets, wildlife and vacations. I've had the camera about 6 months now and I love it! The autofocus is amazing, much faster than the T3i, 19 focus points vs 9 with 19 cross type vs 1! Don't worry if you don't know what that is, it just means it focuses much quicker and you don't get the hunt and peck while it searchs. When you look through the viewfinder you'll see what I mean! The STM lenses are smooth and quiet, and produce excellent pictures. I also picked up the 55-250STM to go with the 18-135STM in a package deal! Vibrant colors, sharp images and excellent low light pictures come easy. The T3i had the variable display, but with the added touch screen it takes it to a new level! You can change settings quicky, on the screen .. no need to go into the menus! Video is OUTSTANDING!! some of my videos look like they were shot with a video camera, and here the auto focus again shines. The camera is loaded with features, too many to mention here, but if you like nice clean photos, bright vibrant images, a quick focus and a fast DSLR .. Be sure you take a look at the 70D.
Pros: excellent autofocus, quiet, feature rich, easy to use
Cons: little pricey

70d is a great camera for the Average / Pro

This is a quality camera for the advanced user. While it has many automatic modes to choose from, that work under a variety of lighting conditions, I prefer to use one of the manual modes for the ultimate photo. With lighting not always ideal I prefer setting a fixed Shutter, Aperture, with auto to manual ISO. I have two lenses which take care of every situation for me. Canon 24x70mm 2.8 & 70x200mm 2.8 lenses. My 70d simply takes amazing professional quality photos but if I wanted better I would try the 80d, 7d Mk II, or wait for the next 5d Mark IV. NOTE: when they come out with a model like the 7d Mark II features with a 28 or higher Megapixel, then you will see higher quality photos. I have been shooting with the 7d for 2 years now and it has been a great camera. I mainly shoot family, action, safari park in escondido, ca, and sports. Also enjoy night shots on the tripod. Yes... a great choice

Just my experience.

I traded in my 60D and bought the 70D. I shoot mainly photos and wanted something a little faster. I shoot 98 percent of the time with a Canon L 100-400 and a Tamron SP 70-300 lenses. After going outside and shooting some birds around the feeder and flowers I downloaded them and had no sharp images. I then proceeded to change the micro adjustment for each lens, the 100=400 had to be set -20 to get a decent shot and the 70-300 I could not get any sharp images from. I returned to the camera shop and we tried the display camera and the images were still not as sharp as my 60D so they gave me my 60D back and refunded my money. Outstanding service form this camera shop in Lexington Ky. (You’re not suppose to use names here) This is not a dig at the 70D, it has a lot of great features over the 60D and In my ratings above I will give this positives for all the improved features. I just want to tell anyone who has the chance to take their lenses with them if possible to check.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

The 70d proves CANON is still king.
on August 31, 2013

The 70d is my third CANON dslr which gave me a little insight to how good this camera really is. Everybody is talking about the video improvements and that's nice, but 90% of my work involves photos for print. The auto focus is extremely accurate and fast. There is virtually no noise in the photos almost giving them that full frame look. It would be hard to improve the 70d. With the right lens this all the camera you will ever need. I don't know about this midrange classification. In the right hands, this is a professional camera.
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality
Cons: no cons

Worthless Canon 70D!!!

I absolutely HATE my Canon 70d! The pictures are “out of focus” when using the autofocus setting, it does not take good quality “rapid photos”. I absolutely Loved my Canon 20d and have used it for years...I was hoping to really love the 70d...however, that purchase was a HUGE and expensive MISTAKE!
