Exceptional sound quality, but mic broke
on September 8, 2015

I purchased my BOSE QC 20 noise canceling ear-phones 2.5 years ago. They have an exceptional sound quality and per all accounts do absolutely cut out background noise to a very large extent, such as on an airplane. Even more so than the Bose noise canceling over-the-head headphones!
However, I went on a walk here in Texas the other day and must have sweated on the microphone...and now the microphone has completely stopped working. And I'm pretty sure the noise canceling does not work now as well. It does not seem to cut out background vacuum cleaner noise any more.
So I'd recommend this product as long as you will not be performing any sort of heated activity while wearing them. I'd love to get a new pair, but now that I know they just outlive the warranty by a factor of 2, I can't justify the expense personally.

I bought the QC20 for the noise cancelling & the volume control. My complaint is
that it works for " I phone, I touch" etc. only. I have a Surface 3.The sound is great,
but if someone wants to talk, you have to remove the ear bud. There must be others who
have both systems with the same problem. Otherwise, the earphones are great.

Fantastic Sound

I've used the QC20's for a little over a year. The sound is great with rich bass and the noise canceling works very well, even on noisy aircraft. The earbuds are comfortable and I've been able to wear them for the entire flight from New York to Hong Kong!
The only problem I have is recently one of the wires that comes from the control piece to the earbud has started shorting out. It causes a very loud pop in your ear when that starts to occur.

Good but needed a tweak

Noise canceling is excellent but the earpiece wasn't quite right: I have large ears and the largest earbud was ok but let in too much ambient sound. It also would fall out on occasion (especially when working on the lawn) so I bought some custom earpieces from a vendor specializing in such a thing.
Huge difference!! Had a chance to test my setup during a long international flight: was in a cabin that gave us CQ15s over the ear, and I had my CQ20i with the original earbuds as well as my custom earpieces. The worst (but still very good) was the CQ20i with original earbuds, second best was the CQ15, and the winner (by far) was the CQ20i with custom earpieces. Totally blown away by the noise canceling with a well-fit earpiece.
For most people this may not be an issue but if you hesitate to buy this product because there's an issue with fit there is another option... and the results will not disappoint!!!!

Overall, Great In-Ear Headphones

I have always had high expectations for any one Bose's products since I first received my first set of Bose a few years ago. The sound quality is always the best, in my opinion and these in-ear headphones where the best I have used in sound quality primarily due to the superb noise cancellation.
Comfort was key and these definitely delivered in that category. The StayHear+ ear tips is a huge improvement in Bose ear tips. It makes noise cancellation better and also are more comfortable due to the seal between the ear canal and ear tip. My only issue in this category would be the cables. At the cable splitter to the individual ear buds, the cables do tend to twist around and is an issue for me when sitting in a car or on a plane (which I intend to use these the most...travel). That issue is rather minimal, but is the only notable problem I have had with-in the past week of getting this product.
Prior to these in-ear headphones, I have owned two other Bose in-ear headphones along with two speakers. As far as the headphones go, I have saw extensive improvements. From my first product being the MIE2 to the SoundSport models, the changes on colors, StayHear ear tips along with a microphone and control buttons really impressed me with the updates made through the years. Now from when I got the SoundSport in August to my first noise cancellation in-ear hear headphones today, the improvements of StayHear+ tips along with a seemingly improved microphone and control buttons, I still have yet to be let down by Bose. Even the noise cancellation feature (which holds true and blocks almost any outside noise) which I expected to work great, was seemingly a jump from a previous QuietComfort over-ear headphones that my parents own. Regardless of the different model (in-ear vs over-ear), the QC20s sounded more clear and powerful, which I loved. The different modes (passive on no battery & aware mode) amazed me as well and worked great. Speaking of the battery, the battery life is strong...and I don't need to worry about constant charging. Also if the battery dies, noise cancellation is simply not as effective, but still carried that great sound I look for in Bose products.
If anyone is looking for a great pair of nose cancellation headphones, I would highly recommend these.
Overall, my rating is a 4.5 out of 5 simply due to the cables which is a small issue, but it is something that could be worked on.
Props to Bose on this product.

"The world is so loud..."

Those were the first words I said after wearing the QC20 for an hour. The noise cancellation is insane. The sound is deep and rich in texture. And of course just like any other Bose earbuds, they are ridiculously comfortable. Bose graciously sent me these for free so that I can review, so after four days of use, I'd like to elaborate on each aspect of the earbuds.
ACTIVE NC: Practically flawless. It transforms the world around you, and works exactly as Bose says. My favorite experience with these was on a bus ride. There was probably something loose inside the bus that caused a deep rumbling and headache-inducing rattling. While my friends were covering their ears in agony, I just plugged in the QC20 and was completely set. Even I turned Aware Mode on, the QC20 still cancelled the noise of the rumbling and most of the rattling, while allowing me to talk with my friends (with full NC, the QC20 even strongly cancels out voices)!
SOUND: The QC20 doesn't have a constant sound signature, because Active EQ varies it depending on the environment around you. However it is easy to give a few characteristics of the sound. These have a very deep bass extension, and were able to play even the deepest rumbles that are hard to hear, but can only be felt. The highs are slightly rolled off, but this is with the intent to protect your ears after long periods of listening. For me, the only drawback of the sound is that although vocals come through beautifully, they don't sound extremely crisp. But that might just be due to the NC slightly interfering with the potential sound quality. I think it is also important to note that turning off the NC also turns off the Active EQ, which results in a drop in sound quality.
COMFORT: Again, practically flawless. The only "flaw" is that if you have sensitive ears, or you have never experienced active noise cancellation before, wearing these with NC on might induce a slight headache for the first couple hours of use. But that's simply because the NC is so good, it is confusing to the brain.
GENERAL: The design and build quality is great. I have been using the included carrying case and I see no problems of them breaking anytime soon. The battery life is just as claimed, around 16 hours. With my regular usage of one class period, a bus ride, and a few hours of listening at night, they lasted me three days before needing a charge again. And finally, if you are worrying about the dongle being annoying, it is for the first few days, but it's pretty easy to adjust to.
OVERALL: Unparalleled level of noise cancellation (can cocoon you in a world of silence), great sound (powerful and clear), and virtually infinite comfort.

QuietComfort 20 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones – Review by Goose
Disclaimer:
I was very excited to receive my first item to review. I already own a Q25, which I enjoy it a lot and I use it regularly for long flights. Whilst I am not a big fan of in-ear headphones, I decided to take my personal view aside so I can provide a fair and honest review. Please note I used '*' to rate each topic, being 5 top rated and 1 low rated.
I - PACKAGING:
* * * * *
➢ Nice and well designed packaging
➢ Easy to carry if you buy it in the airport or somewhere else where you are already carrying luggage
➢ I like when you have a summary of the product capability on the back it makes easier to the consumer to analyze whether the product is suitable for what he/she is looking for.
➢ Product was well fit an all required parts were easy to spot and take out of the box
➢ Instructions were ok, I don’t like them anyway
➢ Nice touch and well done for the little pouch/carrying bag.
-----
II - PRODUCT DESIGN AND COMFORT
* * * *
➢ Nice design for the headphones, the in-ear plugs look a bit big but I can understand why
➢ Good idea to add more in-ear plugs with the product
➢ The box is made of rubber type material which avoids scratching and skipping surfaces, that’s good
➢ Overall good designing and comfortable to wear, but not for long hours or trips, maybe adding different colors may attract younger consumers more. For trips or activities up to 2 hours I would take Q20 for longer activities and trips I would use my Q25.
------
III - SOUND QUALITY WITHOUT NOISE BLOCKING
* * *
➢ It is ok, not great.
------
IV - SOUND QUALITY WITH NOISE BLOCKING:
* * * * *
➢ Very good, superb actually.
➢ Bass is strong but at same time keeps the music clean and enables you to enjoy different types of music, (I tried R&B, Rock, Soft, Pop, Classical and Folk)
➢ I tried it movies in my computer and the result was great.
➢ I used it when going to the park, it works perfectly
➢ When going to work the noise cancelling was pretty good even for Manhattan high and constant noise levels
➢ Traveling, it blocked the airplane noise well too, as good as Q25
➢ Overall sound quality, Q25 gives a more depth quality noise than Q20, nevertheless the later does a very good job in terms of noise cancelling and sound quality.
------
V - BATTERY:
* * *
➢ It promises 16 hours of life, I haven’t tried using it for 16 hours straight yet, but for long flights I would trust more a AAA battery headphone more, like my Q25. If suddenly the battery dies you can simply exchange the battery.
➢ Please see my recommendation below, I would add a small plug to offer an additional way to recharge the battery if you can access a USB port, or if your computer is also struggling for battery.
➢ The manual says it requires only 2 hours charging… sometimes it seemed more than that for full charge.
-----
VI - CONTROLS:
* * * *
➢ I would add an additional button for turning the noise cancelling off/on in the volume controls section (please see recommendations section)
➢ Easy and straight forward controls, quick to learn and get familiar with them
➢ One control feature that I need to congratulate you for thinking to add was the awareness button, before I started reviewing the product, my wife was concerned that if I wear the headphones on noise cancelling mode it could expose me to potential accidents if I couldn’t hear a bike, car, truck etc… coming or beeping towards me.
