Excellent Noise Reduction!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I must first start my review by stating that I'm part of the Bose Test & Review program and received the headphones at no charge for testing purposes. I appreciate the opportunity to test the products. The headphones are beautifully boxed and come with all needed documentation, plus 3 different sizes of ear inserts to assure proper fit. After spending a few minutes getting accustomed to the headphones, I connected them to my iPhone 6 S Plus and began my testing.I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the earphones feel in the ear... a lot of improvement from the earlier version Bose headphones. The headphones have a pleasant balanced sound with plenty of low end, so they worked well with most types of music. Now for the most important area: the noise cancellation. I was shocked at the ability of the circuitry to cancel not only "white noise", but to cancel distinctive sounds, such as speech and horns. I was almost eerie to not hear anything except my own breathing when there was no music playing... that must be what the Astronauts experience in the vacuum of space. :-) DO NOT use these if you are driving! That would create a dangerous situation. I used the headphones in a variety of situations: night clubs, noisy computer server rooms, traveling, etc. The noise cancellation feature works flawlessly. For anyone who travels frequently or works in a noisy environment, these are a must-have item! I had no problems with the other features, such as the remote buttons and the bypass switch on the Noise cancellation module. All functioned as described. A really nice feature is the ability to listen to music without turning the noise cancelling module on. The battery life is great and lasts 12 hours, but why waste it if it's not needed? A very nice feature, indeed! Honestly, the only minor issue I found was that the carrying case is a tad too small. It works, but could be a little bigger. With all of that being said, here's the bottom line: are these headphones worth $299.00? If you are regularly in noisy environments, then you definitely should consider these headphones! It's a lot cheaper than hearing-aids, which is what you'll wind up with from constant exposure to loud noise. I would have given anything to have these for my father when he worked in a factory. He would have not lost most of his hearing over the years. If your just looking for good headphones to simply listen to music, then check out the non noise cancellation models. Good job, Bose! You definitely put a LOT of research and development into this product and it shows.

Wonderful, but....

I loved them for listening, but the microphone is completely unacceptable. One of the main reasons I got them was to talk with people on the phone while I'm walking outside. Not only was the sound quality poor, with fluctuating volume and my words randomly cutting out, but the person on the other end heard ambient noise to the point where they couldn't hear me. I did try clipping them closer to my mouth, but that did not help. Meanwhile, the sound in my ears was perfect.
A Bose customer service rep suggested I try another pair because the mic might have been defective. I did so, and the second was just as bad. So, sadly, I have returned them. Will go back to my on-ear Bose for listening (also not a great mic in the extra cord I bought) and the earbuds that came with my phone for conversion.

Exquisite sound, yet too delicate

I bought these a little over a year ago, to block out the noise of my commute on the NYC subway system. I was amazed at how little of the screeching subway and outside world made its way into my ears. I treated the headphone set like the precious object it is, and dutifully recoiled the wires and put it in the pouch it came with after every single use. After about 6 months of use I noticed that cracks began to appear in the rubber casing around the wiring. Over the next several months, those cracks eventually pulled completely apart and left the wiring exposed. I was very sad to say goodbye to these headphones. Everything except the durability was fantastic. If you are rolling in money, these are definitely for you. If not, then take your chances and use them less.

Hello Meghan,

Thank you for the review. We appreciate the feedback, and it is great to hear that the QC20 headphones were so effective in canceling noise. Putting them in the case and recoiling the wire is exactly the right thing to do to care for the headphones. It sounds like you took great care of the headphones and we are sorry to hear that you are having trouble with them. That is not the kind of experience we want you to have. We build our products to last and support them with a warranty and wold class customer support. It sounds like the headphones are under the warranty and we would like to help.

We have sent an email, but if you prefer to call we are available Monday through Friday 9am to 9pm and Saturday 9am to 7pm EST at 800-380-4831.

If you are looking for the best in noise cancellation technology, look no further. You have come to right place.
If you are looking for the best in sound, comfort, build quality, and value, I suggest you look elsewhere.
2 stars, because its a 3-star product that is priced as a 4-star product.

Noise cancelling not as good as the QC25

The noise cancelling in these in-ear headphones is great, but I'm not sure if they're class leading - it depends on what you prioritize. I find that the QC25 offers the very best noise cancellation throughout the range from deep rumbling bass of e.g. an aircraft engine, to the high pitch noise of e.g. air turbulence, fans, etc. The QC20 is just as good as the QC25 from ca 50 Hz and above, but, crucially, it doesn't do a great job of cancelling out the lowest frequency rumble from engines. As a result, you still "feel" the sound from the engines of e.g. a car or an aircraft, whereas with the QC25, it feels like you literally turned the engine off.
If I could choose, on a long-distance flight, I would rather cancel out the lowest bass sounds of the engine than the high pitch noise from the air condition system, and unfortunately with the QC20, I get the opposite. I would still pick the QC20 though because of comfort and style.
Before owning the QC20, I owned a pair of Sony noise cancelling in-ear headphones, and interestingly they had no problem cancelling out even the lowest frequency rumble in a cabin of an aircraft. That was a very nice feeling because it made it feel like you were free floating in the air like an astronaut. :) The Sony struggled more with the higher frequencies in comparison.
All in all, I'm still happy with the QC25, but I don't feel like the upgrade from the Sony headphones was really worth it. If Bose could manage to cancel out also the low frequency (50 Hz and below), I wouldn't hesitate to give this a 5 star rating.

Average Headphones, High Price

I purchased the headphones about a year ago. The mic picks up background noise, which makes it difficult to use these headphones for phone calls. The person on the other end can only hear random noises, and not me.

I can still hear the babies cry

Length of ownership:1 year or longer
I have owned my pair for more than 3 years. I’ve been an owner of the Boise noise cancelling head sets since the first generation. Unfortunately the recent generations don’t do as well with noise canceling. I use them all the time on my flights. I can still hear babies crying on my flights which I’ve not had that problem with the older generations versions. I appreciate that these are much easier to pack but now the batteries don’t lasts that long. I’m having to recharge them after an 8 hour flight.
