Elf cameras

I have been buying and using one or more cameras since the early '40s and have made thousands of photos on many dozens of cameras. At present, I own and sometimes use an excellent top-of-the-line digital super long range tele, and close-up capabilities. But it is large and difficult to carry around. But now there are dozens of excellent tiny, pocketable digital cameras and nearly all excellent. But I wanted a camera that had great quality, but with a true focusing optical finder, like the sd1200es. It has great quality, fits in my shirt pocket, and allows me to compose and shoot with the camera against my forehead, in my opinion, the ONLY way to make great pictures. The Canon sd1200 was well worth the wait.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable

SMALL ENOUGH TO CARRY EVERY PLACE YOU GO FOR THOSE SPONTANEOUS (GRANDKIDS)PICTURES...TAKES GREAT MOVIES...IT IS EASY TO HOLD AND I LIKE THE FLAT BUTTON ARRANGEMENT ON THE BACK OF THE CAMERA AND HAVE NO TROUBLE PRESSING THEM EVEN WITH MY BIG (OLD) HANDS...AT OUR STATE FAIR I TOOK 450 PICTURES AND 8 SHORT MOVIES ON ONE BATTERY CHARGE.(SOME WITH FLASH IN THE BARNS)... AUTO MODE INDOORS WANTS TO USE TO HIGH OF isos FOR ME, MAKES FOR TO MUCH NOISE IN THE PICTURE, AGIAN THATS JUST ME,(INDOOR MODE, PORTRAIT, OR P MODE, DOES FINE FOR ME INDOORS)(AUTO WORKS WELL OUT DOORS) JUST TRY TOO KEEP ISOs AT 200 OR BELOW FOR EVERY PICTURE YOU TAKE IN OR OUT SIDE......THIS SEEMS TO BE A FAST CAMERA , STARTS UP IN 1sec. SHOT TO SHOT IS 1.5 sec. (WITH THE FLASH ON ABOUT 3 secs.. (CAMERA CASE HINT FOR CANON>>>> I CARREY MINE IN A SMALL PHONE CASE WITH A (BELT CLIP) FOR FAST ON OFF THE BELT.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Bright LCD, good battery life, durable
Cons: very weak (sd card) (battery) door, auto mode (indoors only)

Bad on Full Auto, Good on Program AE
on July 17, 2009

This camera does not work well in Full Auto mode. When shooting indoors in Full Auto I expect to get flash, but instead it often boosts the ISO very high and lowers the shutter speed to blur causing values. When that happens you get grainy, blurry pictures. I have also seen it enable slow sync flash in Full Auto mode, which can result in blurry pictures because of camera shake. I find it troubling that this camera will allow the shutter to drop below 1/60 when shooting in Full Auto mode, that should never happen. Switching to “P” AE mode with Auto flash mode solves this problem. The same indoor shots will get a 1/60 shutter with flash.
Unfortunately Full Auto mode also seems to boost the ISO too much when shooting outdoors in bright light. Switching to “P” AE mode also solves this problem. The camera seems to buzz and focus a lot when it is in Full Auto mode while it is trying to figure out what to do with the scene.
The bottom line is that the camera works poorly in Full Auto mode, but it works well in “P” AE mode.
Pros: Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, works well in "p" ae mode
Cons: poor full auto mode

Fantastic camera!

This is a great camera. I have taken it to Europe twice and people admire it and the picture quality. Wonderful low light pics. I take portraits and group pictures for orgnizations and they are admired. This is the best camera that I have ever had. I really like the viewfinder in bright light conditions and wonder why it is not in newer cameras? I must note that the movies turn out really well.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, fun to use and easy to carry, perfect movies, tolerates a drop, green color is neat
Cons: none!

Great Overall Camera
on July 13, 2009

Been reading several reviews regarding this camera before purchasing. Canon has always had a good reputation in the compact digital segment. I am actually very satisfied with this camera. The overall camera and price leaves little to complain about. The pictures are less sharp than i would hope for, but comparing my previous compact digital (non Canon) the performance and functions still beat that one by far. The options are simplified from other Canons, like the SD870, but are plenty for an entry/intermediate compact digital. I use Manual Program for all my picture taking, and am not at all dissatisfied with the outcome. Many people complain regarding the quality of pictures, but that may be relative to other Canon models. However, in the bigger picture of the entire compact digital market, i think the SD1200 is definitely a great buy, and a keeper.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life

Impressions after 2 months - one big issue
on March 11, 2010

This was an upgrade from the SD1000. The SD1200 images are generally sharper but the camera is missing several features present on the earlier model: Color Accent, Color Swap, specific vivid color selection, voice recorder. There also seems to be an SmartAuto mode firmware problem that causes high ISO settings and long exposures in low light conditions even when the flash is set to fire. This results in grainy, overexposed images in that mode. (Resetting the camera did not resolve this issue.) This is easy to overcome by using the camera in P mode in low light conditions. SmartAuto seems to work fine in bright light conditions.
Pros: good battery life, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings, Poor Low-Light Performance

Great little camera

I bought this to replace my s1100is. It is more stylish and faster. Takes great pictures and movies and is small enough to tuck into my jersey while cycling. A nice improvement over the last version is you can zoom while taking video. And it takes decent video. The only thing I don't like is that I like to shoot with my focus on spot mode. You can set it on spot focus, but every time you change shooting mode or turn off the camera, it goes back to evaluative mode. I have lots of Canon cameras from this to several digital slr's and they are the best! If you are looking for a small easy to use camera with high picture quality, get this one, you won't be disappointed.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable
