LOVE THIS CAMERA!!!
on June 13, 2010

Purchased this camera in December 2009 and love it more everyday. I wanted something lightweight and slim to carry but still wanted a lot of features. I generally use the "Program" feature to play around with settings. Have used most of them by now, including video and stitch assist, and am very pleased. The only down-side to this camera (and I do mean ONLY) is the "Auto" setting. Used it yesterday for probably the first time and while I was pleased with the way it focused my shots (even when I was unsteady taking them), they came out a little blurry when I transferred to my computer. Also found that the flash was a bit too strong for my indoor shots and tended to wash people out, depending on the angle. This could be shooter-error though. Not sure about durability b/c I've been handling this thing more carefully than an infant, so obviously no problems yet. I love this camera and have recommended it to all of my friends (and even a few strangers).
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
I would recommend this to a friend!

Compact Point and Shoot
on May 12, 2009

This is an excellent constructed compact point and shoot camera. Very fast start up time. Image quality is excellent. Focus is relatively fast with with a short shutter delay. Controls and menus are well lay-out and easy to use especially if you are familiar with Canon products. Overall an excellent camera for someone looking for a camera they can just drop in there pocket.

Woe thy name is NOISE!
on September 30, 2009

The good: The smallest thing available from Canon. Light and small, you can easily fit it in your pocket. Quick power up. Decent construction, had no issues with the buttons even though they're flush with the body. Decent battery life. Great video performance. If you want a compact HD video capable device, this is it. The video is MUCH more acceptable than the stills.
The bad: Incredible amount of noise on ALL ISO settings! Maybe it's the 12Mp sensor allowing you to see more of it but I couldn't believe it. Even on ISO 80 you can see it quite apparent if viewing full size. Anything above ISO 200 is quite useless. The noise suppression is SO intrusive it completely washes out detail. I hate to say this but my old S40 does better. No full manual mode. Can only vary exposure but not aperture. I understand this is common these days although my old S40 had it. No option to completely disable IS, which is what I suspect is a chief factor in the poor image quality.
A potentially wonderful camera that just... isn't.
Pros: easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable

Picture Quality Rivals National Geographic
on October 16, 2011

Although I don't know first hand, unquestionably National Geographic photographers use Canon cameras. However, I doubt they use the Powershot, which is made for consumer use and not professional.
Little by little I've gotten better at using the Powershot's features, but for the most part I just point and click. No offense Canon, but sometimes a good photo is based on the right time and place. However, Canon does get credit for being able to capture those opportune moments with picture quality at National Geographic level with just a point and click.
You can bet my next camera will be an SLR as well as a Pro Camcorder. But don't think for a second I'll give up my Powershot. I've had my SD780 for over 2 years. Even though I'll upgrade to an SLR, Camcorder, and maybe even a different Powershot, I'm not doing so because of needing something better, just different. Any camera by Canon...is good for life.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Best Christmas Present
on January 6, 2010

My husband bought me this camera for Christmas. I wanted a smaller camera than my big Digital SLR for trips on the motorcycle and to take to concerts. I didn't want to get one that didn't have any different options for taking photo's. This one has it all. It's like I took my big SLR and shrunk it with all of the same functions and shooting options. Honestly I haven't found anything I don't like about it, except I'm still trying to find out how to change aperture settings if you can. If not that would be a negative. I would definitely recommend this camera to my friends and family.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use

Not good for catching kids
on November 8, 2009

The camera does make nice images. BUT it is very slow in both taking the first picture and taking the next ones, so I keep missing all of the precious moments. The "lesser quality" old digital camera that I used to use actually does a much better job of taking back-to-back images. This problem is even worse in low light.
Pros: easy to use, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, durable
Cons: Poor image quality, Poor Low-Light Performance, very slow
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I own several canon digital cameras. I passed the first one on to my oldest daughter when I purchased a newer model. The second to my youngest daughter and the third to my son when I purchased the red SD780. I just LOVE canon. Easy to use, great pictures and great features. Keep up the great job!!
