I would recommend you to get the one without the traffic updates. I decided to get the one with the traffic transmitter (which is included in the power source for the car) since I'm in the Dallas area (HEB area) but I haven't really seen a change of what I would do with or without.
I would say the only thing that "bothers" me is that sometimes I have problems turning the unit on/off. I slide the switch and some times it takes 2-3 slides, or sometimes it turns on at the 1 slide. This is the reason for the 4 star rating.
Other than that, it's a great device. Easy to use, easy to navigate, easy to setup. If you get the one without the lifetime traffic, you would save even more money.
What's great about it: Relatively cheap (cheaper if you don't get the traffic transmitter), easy to use, easy to setup
What's not so great: Sliding switch to turn on/off. But it may be just my unit....

This is my first GPS ever. It's really simple and affordable. There arn't alot of things you can do on this GPS except to use it for directions. Which by my standards is perfect because I don't really need internet connection or anything like that. Maybe in the future I'll think about a more high tech GPS but for now this is perfect. If your thinking about buying your first GPS unit then I think this Garmin is perfect.
What's great about it: Easy to use and affordable.
What's not so great: Sometimes there are little glitches but it's not a huge issue.

I've owned a number of Garmin GPS units and added this one to the collection - as compared to older GPSMAP units this screen is great - much easier to use in the car. Plus: the human interface is much better as well.
The only frustration I have is today there are too many products out there from Garmin - takes too long to figure out the product features and differences. Alas - selected this one because it was on a great Black Friday sale.
Also supports a 4GB SanDisk flash memory device - much easier for getting things into the GPS (versus the old way of moving data over a slow USB connection).
What's great about it: Great screen - simple to use
What's not so great: Garmin web site is still difficult to navigate / use

My dad loved his GPS so much and after playing around with it myself, I think I'll get my own! I think that the automatic map updates is a really cool plus, not to mention the ease of use and the size of the screen is perfect! I would only reccommend Garmin over any other GPS systems.

I've owned several different gps's, and this one is a total winner. I found this on sale for $79.99, what a deal. The last gps I owned was a Garmin nuvi, and it still works fine, but the maps are out of date, and it doesn't do traffic without a subscription. For 79.99 its a no brainer, it works great, hell to many people expect gps's to be the end all be all. If you don't know how to get there it will.

This is a terrific GPS unit. Totally easy and intuitive to use. Information on the battery was too brief in the online manual. I was helped by a very competent tech person at Garmin. While the Nuvi255WT is plugged into the car charger and being used, the battery isn't being charged but it won't deplete To charge it, it must be off.. For this reason, I purchased the indoor charger to give it a full charge evrey so often. I also purchaded the Garmin bean bag dash holder to keep it off the windshield. Make sure you get the 255 with the WT as that model comes with free lifetime traffic information (with some advertising). The FM receiver is built into the car charger. I really like this a lot!
What's great about it: Fast Set-Up, Easy & Accurate
What's not so great: Online manual is a little skimpy

I liked a lot of things about the 255WT including the very clear large screen and the speed and acuracy of the GPS. But one of the most basic reasons that I want a GPS is for the map function. While the street shapes, curves, etc are very acurate, the actual street names while you drive are missing! Imagine driving at night and it's raining and you're looking for street names on the signs as you drive by but you can't see them. That's why I have a GPS so I can see all the street names upcoming or a block over. I also would want to be able to zoom in and out without it changing on me so I can see the layout exactly as I would like to see it with all the street names. My old GPS did this, but had an inferior GPS system (5 years old) and would take forever to lock on to my position. This unit is great for that, but it's very frustrating that I can't see the street names. (if you tap on the screen, the names magically show up but your little car drives off the map! It won't follow you.) I called Garmin and they told me it is hit and miss with their software updates whether it shows the name or not. They suggested I email the software developers my comments. Not too comforting to me. I'll be taking mine back today and exchanging for another model or brand. Too bad because I love everything else about it!
What's great about it: Very fast locating of position
What's not so great: Doesn't show street names of near by streets and upcoming streets unless major ones.

I have resisted getting a GPS for years thinking I could live without it. After going on a business trip and getting utterly lost I changed my tune. I did alot of research and decided to go with this. So far I have been nothing but pleased. The display is clear, the spoken directions are loud and clear (and my hearing isn't great), and the response time has been excellent - if you miss a turn it recalculates in a second or two.
A potential knock is if you are looking for bluetooth this doesn't have it but it comes with lifetime updates so that was an added bonus. I would definitley recommend this.
What's great about it: Intuitive, Loud, Fast, Plug it in and go
