The movie of course rocks. Don't even need to go there. Star Trek franchise rescued and reborn.
But the "extras" with the set left me cold. The badges are great-- heavy metal with clothing pins. No cheap plastic knock-offs here. Would have liked to seen a display case of some sort-- even a cheap plastic one. ; )
However, the "extras" in the set are greatly lacking. The so-called "digital copy" is poor quality and restricted by Paramount to ONE installation (so forget putting it on your desktop and laptop). This is a case of worst abuse of digital protection and IMO, is an abuse of the concept.
The "extras" disc came up short both in content and quality. One would think with a Blu-Ray disc they could cram a whole lot more on 25 gigs. I'm sure there was no shortage of fan-interest information in the development of the movie... so I'd have to call that "rushing it to the market". They could have done lots better.
In the end game, I found myself wishing I'd bought the DVD version so I could play it on my laptop if I took a notion. The Blu-Ray edition of course is excellent quality, no issues there. But Paramount's extreme restriction of a poor-quality "digital copy" is a customer-unfriendly policy that does nothing to promote good will or additional purchases of "digital copy" media.
What's great about it: Great movie, hands down
What's not so great: Shoddy "digital copy", no disply case for badges

This new Star Trek movie was done in such a way that someone who has never seen any of the Star Trek's could watch it and enjoy a great science fiction movie where old fans could see and hear references to the old series.

I went blu-ray because of this particular movie coming out. The badges look nice online, but can't actually review yet. I think it was a promotion to encourage Blu-ray player purchases, though I needed no more incentive than the film itself. Live long and prosper.

I bought 2 copies ,one (the gift set ) I didn't open and left it in the mailer knowing it will be a collectors item later .The second copy I watched . Great movie , but it was better in IMAX .Also it would have been even better in full screen .

I don't think this a spoiler, but be warned. This was the perfect replacement timeline for this original series original viewer. Each of our favorite characters is a superhero. This plot epitomizes the Star Trek time travellers theme, only this time it's not the Enterprise crew that falls through time (mostly). Tremendous story, begging to be retold.
What's great about it: This movie moves; What a pace, Great Star Trek story, Excellent effects. Wonderfull portrayals of favorite characters!
What's not so great: Example: Short battery life, scratches easily

I am the idiot they target with these things. I simply bought this for the Pins. I am a sci fi, robot, pop culture collector, and I love Star Trek to begin with and planned on getting the movie anyway. I bought my first copy from Amazon who offered a metal replica of the Enterprise. I then saw this one. So even though I already bought the movie, I got it again for the pins. I also bought a THIRD copy because they offered a replica of the Enterprise that holds the disc. So I can vouch for the fact that special marketing like this does sell merchandise. The movie is great...an excellent reboot of a classic franchise. They did the same with Lost in Space but with really bad results. Great actors playing great characters, in a great franchise, what more can you ask. Keep a special eye on Karl Urban who plays Dr. McCoy. I never thought anyone can play McCoy as good as DeForest Kelly, but Karl Urban comes pretty darn close. So if you like goodies with your movie purchases, this is it. Have fun.
What's great about it: The extra command pins
What's not so great: Some of the special features are not needed.
