This new Trek is a little scatterbrained. How does Kirk get from Cadet to Captain so quickly? Why does Spock hold him in such contempt when he's not supposed to feel anything at all? What the heck is red matter? Why are there so many lens flares?

No matter. The gang's all here, and there's plenty of excitement, action, and special effects. For most people, including non-Trekkies, that's enough. I feel like it doesn't do enough to keep long-time fans of Star Trek on board, but it's still better than no Trek at all.
