I have waited for this movie my entire life. It is great when it respects the comic source (Breaker's gum chewing, Hawk is the General instead of Duke etc). It was distracting to see Hawk dressed as Flint, The Baroness as an American involved with Duke, Roadblock...errr Heavy Duty with a Brittish accent and no Shipwreck. Since the cast is made up mostly of Stephen Summers' actors, why did he not ask Hugh Jackman to fill in for the Sailor. Brendon Fraser also pops up for 5 minutes as a Gungho / Sgt Slaughter fascimile. This was a fun movie, and Channing Tatum was great, but I was left wanting something more in line with the Comic. I thought that was kind of the whole point of the film. If they just wanted to create something new, why even use the G.I.Joe name. Also, I actually thought the acting was pretty good across the board.
What's great about it: The Look of the Baroness and Snake-Eyes are spot on. Scarlett fits in nicely and Dennis Quaid seems enjoy playing Hawk.
What's not so great: Cobra Commander should be a used car salesman/ Fascist Dictator, not a mad scientist. This was an unnecessary change.

I HAVE SEEN ALMOST EVERY SCI FI AND A COLLECTION OF 200 DVD'S AND I BELIEVE THIS RATED IN THE UPPER 20%. THIS MOVIE HAD GREAT SPECIAL EFFECTS AND WAS IN A FUTURE WORLD. I WAS NOT EXPECTING THIS TO BE IN THE FUTURE WHICH MADE IT A PLEASANT SURPRISE. THE ACTING WAS GOOD AND THE SPECIAL EFFECTS LEFT YOU IN AWE, ALTHOUGH AT TIMES IT WAS HARD TO BELIEVE UNTIL YOU REALIZED THAT THIS WAS THE FUTURE AND ANYTHING COULD BE POSSIBLE. I ALSO BELIEVE THIS LEFT YOU WITH A REALIZATION THAT IF YOU DIDN'T TAKE CARE OF THE PLANET THIS FUTURE COULD BE VERY POSSIBLE.
What's great about it: GREAT SPECIAL EFFECTS, ENDING LEFT TELLING YOU THAT THERE WAS GOING TO BE A SEQUEL
What's not so great: THIS DEFINITELY IS NOT FOR THE YOUNG BECAUSE OF VIOLENCE, LANGUAGE, AND NUDITY

Judging this movie as an adaption of one of the two most popular 1980s cartoons....this is the best one yet. Both the Transformers films missed the target i.m.o., in that they were about the people, not the Transformers. I won't get into detail there.
G.I. Joe, on the other hand, gets everything but the costumes right. There are a few things they did that never would have happened in the cartoon. But this is a movie, and the way they did those things worked.
The costumes are all different--I would have liked to see at least a few nods to the original costumes, but to be honest with myself, if they had done that, the movie would have looked like a video for The Village People. The only one who looks exactly like she did in the cartoon is the Baroness. But the Baroness is also missing her accent. There's a good reason for that change, however.
Aside from the look, this entire movie is just like the cartoon. I highly recommend sitting down and watching a few episodes of the original cartoon before watching this movie. I did. And it's pretty obvious the writers and the director, and the actors, did as well.
The writers did a fantastic job. It was so much like the cartoon, with all the crazy plot twists and ridiculously convenient and improbably character connections, I kind of got the feeling this movie was written in the 1980s by the same people who wrote the TV show.
This movie moves very fast, it avoids answering all sorts of questions. There's all sorts of technology and fancy personal war vehicles that seem to come out of nowhere...you'll find yourself thinking, "Gee, it's a good thing they had a bunch of those handy" several times. Just like the cartoon.
What's great about it: Felt just like the 80s cartoon, made me feel like a kid again

4 of 5 stars for the action movie G.I. Joe. OK, so I've lost touch with some of the new things... When you say GI Joe to me, I think of the action toy GI Joe with his circa WWII Jeep and uniform. I seem to have slept thru all of the various modernizations of GI Joe including the comic book, cartoon movies and newer toys. So, going into this movie, I had no expectatoins of what it would be. So, I've learned that the action toy has morphed into an elite military unit with sci-fi special weapons and tools. Only the elite become GI Joe's (men and women) who work out of "The Pit". This movie was very well made. Action from the first minutes to introduce the team during a firefight to protect a truck convoy. Next we find the hero of protecting that convoy is taken to the Pit and introduced to the team; after traning he becomes a GI Joe. The bulk of the movie was focused on the recovery of the item taken from that truck convoy and learning who was behnd the plot. Some good twists and unexpected things. Great action, wow sets and special effects that were seamless, the characters were a bit flat and 2-D hence the 4 stars. Oh, did I mention great action (yes, I did). This is a fun movie to watch and is worth a couple of bags of popcorn to enjoy. I do recommnd it. The blu-ray had sufficient behind-the-scenes contents on a second disk in the set, however, that disk and materials were on SD on a DVD; too bad, no HD extra contents. I do recommend this movie.
What's great about it: Great action, great special effects, good plot, fun to watch
What's not so great: DVD Extras are SD on DVD rather than HD on Blu-Ray, characters thin & 2-D
