The sound quality is not crystal clear, but the sound is still very good. I can't compare to a regular land line as I haven't had one for 15 years. I got this so I would save my cell minutes as I'm on the phone a lot now that my job is working from home quite often.
I was interested in adding a splitter to the ooma box so I could have 3 lines going out - one to the phone, the second to a wall phone outlet, and the third to my DirecTv box. What I found is that there's not enough room for the 3 outlet switch. You can put a 2 outlet switch on the ooma box, but not 3.
Here's my setup. Modem > Router > Switch > Ooma Box > telephone/DirecTv box (Ooma only has 1 telephone out jacks, so need the dual jack accessory bought from hardware store).
There are other configurations that can be done, for example: Modem > Ooma Box > Router & telephone
One thing that I found puzzling is that there's really no information that I've found that shows how or when you pay the monthly taxes. I had to provide my credit card information at the time of activation of the Ooma, so maybe in the fine print that is mentioned, but looking at the FAQ's on Ooma's website I couldn't find anything. Kind of interesting that they wouldn't have that mentioned anywhere. I think my monthly charge is around $3.10 for the FCC fees/taxes, but that depends on where you live (or maybe your service address, not sure).

I bought the Ooma 2 years ago and thought it was a bit expensive.. But 2 years of not paying any service fees or contract fees I am happy I bought this device! This about it.. if your paying $9.99 (+Taxes) a month it will add up to 120ish a year.. That is already over half of the amount the Ooma costs! Well worth it!

What a GREAT idea- you already have highspeed Internet, and you are ALREADY paying for that- why ALSO pay for your phone service? Comcast is already doing it- their telephone service is just a dressed up VoIP on their Internet service. So why pay twice for what can be done on an existing service?
So I read Daniela's review (below), and while she does make some good points, she is also very short sighted in her review, and I wanted to set some of her misconceptions straight.
>>> The Ooma Telo is no longer a free phone service like the old Ooma. No, and it no longer claims to be, Times change, regulatory agencies see a new place to tax, not exactly Oomas fault is it? Goverments will tax anywhere and everywhere they can. I think it is amaing that Oooma kept it to ONLY 12 bucks a year. AND they grandfather in older users, so we still have free phone service!
>>> To get Caller ID Names you must pay for the $120/year premier service. Again, true. But show me a phone company- ANY landline phone service- with FREE caller ID. I am waiting.... Oh, none, huh? I think Qwest charges 5 bucks a month for this- that is HALF the Premier service cost. Looks like a GOOD deal to me, with all the other cool things included in Premier.
>>> You must pay $50/year for voicemail or $120/year for premier service to get this feature with the Telo. Same as above. Double down.
>>> Good VoIPs have an included service that forwards phone calls to another number when your Internet connection is down. WHat? Is 10 bucks a month TOO MUCH for you? If you NEED it, p[ay for it. At least you have a choice here, and if you don't need it, you do not need tto get it. If you need it, PAY for it, but don't complain because this (and everything else) is not free, too.
>>> Telephone or cable phone companies will port your number for free. Be aware you must pay Ooma $40 to port True, but again, if you don't need it, it is not a hidden fee in your monthly bill.
>>> Ooma has moved so many basic features to their premier plan that it is almost necessary to buy the $120/year premier plan. For $250 you get a dial tone and caller id numbers. Anything else expect to pay more to Ooma. Yeah, so what? Personally, I do not think that 10 bucks a month is too much for the tons of services I get. It is FAR less than I was paying Qwest, and I get a LOT more. Like caller blacklist- I would pay 10 bucks a month JUST for that. At least you still have a free option- try getting that from Qwest or Comcast. If you need something more, than MAN UP and pay for what you use, don't cry because it is not free.
What's great about it: No More Qwest, Good Feature List, Looks Great, Blacklist Telemarketers!
What's not so great: Only as good as your Internet Connection

What a fantastic product. I had no land line as I used my cell phone at home etc. But always worrryng about having the cell phone next to my brain and potentially getting a brain tumor, I broke down and purchased this box. Now I talk on this at all times when I am at home and feel great doing so,
It was easy to install and I got a new number no problem - even in Los Angeles. They rate they estimated for taxes was right on the money as my first bill was only $3.27.
It has been very dependable and can even have a fax machine hanging off of teh basic service. It includes a voice mail box and two line capability without the premium service.
My girlfriend went to Vietnam for a month and I paid $10 to talk to her while she was away. The sound quality is good and I have had very few miscalls or voice quality issues. Dump your land lands now and use this - you will never regret it. Customer service is good as well.
What's great about it: Easy to install, good features and sound quality and way cheaper than a land line

I got one for myself and one for my grandmother. I paid $199 for each unit and $119 for a year of service on each unit. It might $640 might sound like a lot for a phone bill but neither me or my grandmother will have to pay phone bill for over a year. (You get 6 months free service) I'm saving tons of money a month. Ooma is more expensive than Magic Jack but sounds much better. The device cost more that Vonage but the service is cheaper.
What's great about it: Sound quality a million time better than Magic Jack. Basic service is free. Get all the extras for only $10 a month.

I love my Ooma. We've had it for over 6 months now and have never dropped a call or not been able to make a phone call when we needed to. The sound quality is the same as with a regular landline so far as we can tell. The only unexpected thing was that it cost us a bit more to set up than we were expecting due to the fact that we had to pay the phone company to "uncouple" the phone and internet lines into our house. Some people will not have to have this done but it's a good idea to check with the phone/internet company before you start out just so you know how much it's really going to cost. Also don't forget that if you want your same number, Ooma will charge you about $50 but that's totally worth it to keep your current phone number. Ooma customer service is pretty good and you never really have to go through a huge IVR when you call them so that's refreshing. Overall this is product is working exactly as we expected it to and is now saving us $40 per month on our phone bill. Nice!
What's great about it: Works as expected and saves us money every month.
What's not so great: More expensive to set up then we originally thought due to the phone company.
