I don't believe that it does but it has Google drive apps that are basically the same, after a few days of adjusting to Google drive you won't need word.

You have a few options...the easiest of which is to use Google Drive and Google Docs, and use those online to work on documents.

If you are familiar with Microsoft Word and have a Microsoft Hotmail or Live account....then you can log into Microsoft Live to use SkyDrive and Microsoft Live Office.

The Chrome Operating system uses Google Documents for word processing. The system can import and export MS Word compatible files and also allows you to save the files as PDFs or email them directly from the "application". The system has about 10 standard fonts but also allows you to browse a database to find new fonts.

New files should be placed on a thumb drive and uploaded into your Google Drive account, one option is to automatically convert them while importing.

Yes it can, however it will be through Google's Word version (Google Docs). You can type an essay or anything on there and then port it over to a Word format at anytime.

Yes google can easily address word by using google docs and drive. You can import all of your documents onto google drive and edit them on the go, aswell as download them again and use word to edit them.

Chromebooks utilize Google Docs for creation of documents and spreadsheets. Google Docs is not as versatile as Word and Excel, but does have most of the functionality. You will be able to open previously saved Word documents, but if there is complex formatting, it may not transfer perfectly.

Google Docs is a fantastic resource for users. The interface is similar to Microsoft Office, making the learning curve small. To open a document in Google Docs, you upload whatever document from your computer to Google Drive and edit away!

There are multiple word processing apps available on the marketplace. The one I have used that resembles word almost exactly is called Nexusinstallfree which allows you to create Word documents,powerpoint presentations, and Excel worksheets. The pro of this app is that it is free, as opposed to Microsoft office which can cost over 100 dollars. The downside of this app is that you MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET TO USE IT. There may be a processor like word that works offline but I have yet to find one. There are word processors like notepad that work offline, but as you probably know these are very basic. By the way you can open Word documents and presentations on a chromebook(without the app).

In addition to these other correct answers; You can always store some music/movies/pictures etc to the internal drive or an SD card/USB flash drive for some entertainment on the go. I found it to be an awesome movie machine on the go.

A:

Yes you can access and edit your google documents offline and they still save automatically. Once your back online they sync to your google drive for access from any device via your google account.. You can make certain other files available offline by checking the box that says "available offline" or simply downloading it to your hard drive. There is an entire section dedicated to offline apps in the google chrome web store. While the Chromebook is at it's best when it's online, it is not "paperweight" offline.

Google Docs is included in that list for offline editing and creation that automatically syncs once you're back online.

Security is built into the chromebook with google doing all the work. All the updates are pushed every 6 weeks which will deal with all the holes that might be found. Chrome OS is very secure and google is a leading company in keeping things secure.

Additional security software is not needed with Chrome OS because it was designed to be secure. Chrome devices include the following security features:

Automatic updates - Chrome device administrators manage updates automatically so Chrome devices are always running the latest and most secure versions.

Sandboxing - On a Chrome device, each web page and application runs in a restricted environment called a sandbox. So if the Chrome device is directed to an infected page, it can’t affect the other tabs or apps on the computer, or anything else on the machine. The threat is contained.

Verified Boot - When a Chrome device starts up, it does a self check called Verified Boot. If it detects that the system has been tampered with, or corrupted in any way, it will repair itself, taking the Chrome device back to an operating system that’s as good as new.

Data Encryption - When using web apps on a Chrome device, all important data is stored safely in the cloud. Certain kinds of files, like downloads, cookies, and browser cache files, may still be present on the computer. The Chrome device encrypts this data using tamper-resistant hardware, making it very difficult for anyone to access those files.

Recovery Mode - If anything goes wrong with a Chrome device, you can simply push a button to enter recovery mode and restore the operating system to a known good version.

I would add that an SSD is also much less prone to destruction from bumps and movement than a regular hard drive and uses much less power. More battery life with SSD. Use a SDXC card for up to 64 gigs of additional storage.

A:

There are two main differences, one which you have pointed out. The SATA HDD has more storage space. More room for movies, photos, documents, etc. available on your local storage rather than on cloud storage such as google drive. This has an advantage if you are planning on using the Chromebook a lot offline, which if that is the case you really need to reconsider getting a Chromebook.

The other main difference is speed. The Solid state drive is much faster than the SATA HDD. This affects the boot times, the Chromebook with the Solid State drive will boot and resume from sleep much faster. You will also notice better performance with more tabs open in the browser. When you have more tabs open then can fit in memory it will start cache the data to the physical storage. The solid state will be able to return this data to memory much faster than the HDD.

Overall, you are looking at Chromebooks, you should not be concerned about the amount of storage and be more concerned with the performance. In this case the $250 Samsung Chromebook wins.
