Slide-in ranges have a more custom look and allow for more flexibility in terms of placement. They are designed to slide in and fit flush with your countertop. These models are ideal for island or peninsula installation and can also be placed against a wall to showcase a decorative backsplash, but they must be surrounded by cabinets.
Freestanding ranges are used in traditional installations (against the kitchen wall) and typically have a back guard with a clock and controls mounted on the front, top or backsplash. Freestanding ranges can only be placed against a wall, with or without surrounding cabinets. If you are not installing it into cabinetry, you will need a freestanding model.
