Nothing Quite Like It

As a Dark Souls fan who never played any of the prior God of War games, I was intrigued to read that this latest game changed the combat system to become more Dark Souls-like. Although I can't agree with that comparison (this still feels more like wild button-mashing than disciplined tactics), God of War is a lot of fun. It is gorgeous to look at, with TONS of things to do, and a compelling story line. The crafting and skill trees remind me more of Middle Earth: Shadow of War. There is no stamina bar like in Dark Souls, so you can hack n slash without restraint.

Enroll in a virtual high school when you play Persona 5 for PlayStation 4. This was my first Persona game. I really like the fact that the main theme is to change/steal the hearts of the corrupt instead of just killing them. The premise and game play are a bit Matrix- and Inception-like, which I also really liked. The graphics and music are quite polished and stylish. But the combat model is pretty tired (Ni No Kuni-esque, I suppose), and progress is slow. It helps to have insight into Japanese culture as you navigate the dialogue options (or you might gain some along the way). There is not a lot of free time or exploration so you have to choose wisely on those rare occasions when you are not on rails. I would like to play through to the end to see how the story all fits together, but it seems like that may take more time than I am willing to dedicate. Already getting tired of Ryuji blurting out the first thing that pops into his thick head, and Ann is too precious/girly-girl.

This is my first foray into the Tales series and my first anime-style game. Dark Souls is probably my favorite game of all time, so this was definitely a change. Souls requires patient, precise timing in combat and the exploration seems open-ended. In Tales, the combat seems more like frantic button-mashing and there is basically no freedom to explore. I really like the furious, intense personality of the main character in Tales, but the drab environments and manic combat were not to my liking.

Did a lot of research trying to find a good gaming system without going broke. Found this at a local store and was impressed with the components and reasonable price. The only weird thing is it comes with software CDs, but the PC actually has no CD drive. All the software you need is pre-installed, and you can download updates etc. on-line, but you have to wonder about the genius who included software CDs but no drive.
