A Whole New World For All of Us

Of all of the Walt Disney films that have come out over the years on Blu-Ray, I have been more excited for Aladdin than anything else. Of all of Disney's "Big Four" of their fabled Renaissance period, The Lion King was the first to grace High Definition in 2011, quickly followed by Beauty and the Beast. The Little Mermaid joined them in 2013, and now Aladdin adds the complete touch, with just the right hint of magic.
Aladdin, based on the Arabian fairytale, takes place in the mythical city of Agrabah, where Aladdin, a street rat forced to steal in order to survive, is taken aghast by the beauty of the Princess Jasmine, who seeks independence from an ancient law forcing her to marry a prince. In order to win her heart, Aladdin turns to the aid of the Genie, a wisecracking maker of magic that yearns for his freedom, and wishes himself a Prince. But, conflicted by his choices, he must also deal with the villain Jafar, the Royal Vizer that seeks the throne for himself.
In terms of story, the film is absolutely great. It holds down all of the usual romantic cliches and opts for great characters, and an even better villain. But where Aladdin shines is really in its comedy. Sure, the other films are funny, but the Genie is really what carries this film, from his impersonation of modern day celebrities (the Jack Nicholson impersonation stands as my favorite), to his quick quips. I don't think this film would hold up without the Genie.
As for the animation, it is superb. While I do think that the Lion King holds the title for better animation, Aladdin is certainly a close second, with the stunning visuals of Agrabah, to the blending of CGI to create the carpet and the Cave of Wonders, and the famous sequence from "A Whole New World" to give it that taste of coming close to being there.
As far as voice acting goes, credit has to go to Robin Williams as the Genie. His talent was just amazing, and I was really saddened to hear of his passing. He truly is the heart and soul of the Genie, and he will be missed. The other actors also do an outstanding job. Scott Weigner and Linda Larkin both play off each other well as Aladdin and Jasmine, and Frank Welker makes Abu an enjoyable kleptomaniac monkey. Jonathan Freeman also stands out as Jafar, giving an eerie feeling of gloominess along the lines of horror film stars like Boris Karloff. And let's not forget about Iago, that little complainer of a parrot, as Gilbert Gottfried just goes all out with it. The Sultan, voiced by Douglas Seele, is also funny, because he's this giddy little ruler that almost has a little child-like personality to him.
The character development is also nicely done, though I feel that Beauty and the Beast did it better. Yes, Aladdin does get the girl after he lies to her face, but what did you expect? Most Disney movies do often give the wrong message, but we still love them anyway. In the end, Aladdin is willing to give up his chance to be with Jasmine because he would rather see Genie free after all that happened. Maybe there's just a hidden message that we aren't aware of, I don't know.
And let's not forget about the music. Though the Little Mermaid might have had its notable numbers, Aladdin really stands out with "Friend Like Me", because let's face it; that song is hilarious. Everything about it, from the lyrics, to the visuals behind it, is just a serious crack up, and there's nothing not to love about it. "Prince Ali" and "One Jump" are also fun songs, and I will admit I have a little soft spot for "Arabian Nights", but "A Whole New World" stands out as being the best song, because it gives a really dramatic and unforgettable feel. We all have to thank Alan Menken, Tim Rice, and the late Howard Ashman for such wonderful songs.
In the end, Aladdin is still a masterpiece in its own right. Not perfect by any means necessary, but it is something everyone will enjoy for generations to come. This will not only preserve Disney's legacy, but also Robin William's, for this will ensure that people remember a man who made us all laugh. We'll miss you Robin.

The Mouse House Just Got a Little Bigger...

Almost as iconic as Mickey Mouse himself, Minnie Mouse has proven to be just as popular and iconic, making her inclusion in Disney Infinity to be a well though out choice. But still, I want Goofy. Where's Goofy? Maybe in 4.0? Minnie's in this one, so Goofy has to be in 4.0.
Minnie's figure perfectly captures the character, and her combat style is hilarious. Throwing a simply purse at battle droids or Stormtroopers make for a hilarious setup that makes you realize that those things can hurt, but it's even more embarrassing for the bad guys. But seriously, why is it that characters throw cartoon things? It's not slapstick, it's a mouse vs the droid army. Oh well, at least Russi Taylor is still the voice.
Is Minnie worth adding to the game? Very much so. Let's just hope they don't give her a pink dress figure in 4.0. I want Goofy!

For over a thousand years, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of the peace and justice throughout the galaxy. Now, with this power disc pack, you can create the Old Republic in your Toybox anytime you want.
The pack itself comes with four different discs, two of which let you create the Star Wars world of Felucia, complete with a John Williams-Esque score to accompany the world. If you were recreating the tragic end of Aayla Secura during order 66, or trying to create an alternate scenario to save her from her fate, the discs are the perfect way to do so.
The third disc comes with General Grievous' wheel bike from "Revenge of the Sith", making me wish Disney would make the four armed cyborg his own figure. It's kind of fun if your having Obi-Wan Kenobi drive it in a fight against Grievous, but it doesn't feel complete with Grievous.
The final disc allows for, in the style of Ant-Man, White Tiger, and Winter Soldier, to summon Mace Windu for a quick aid against your foes. This is what disappoints me, because I was hoping that Windu would get his own figure as well, leading to a team up with Nick Fury, and thus a Samuel L. Jackson crossover right in the Toy Box. I guess you could use the disc with Fury, but it's just not the same.
In the end, the Twilight of the Republic pack is worth getting, just as long as you don't want Mace Windu teaming up with Nick Fury.

Who's the leader of the Club that's made for you and me? M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E. Don't believe me? Well then why is Mickey the face of the Walt Disney Company? Is it because he starred in the groundbreaking cartoon "Steamboat Willie"? Is it because he's a key player in Kingdom Hearts? Or is it those ears? It's got to be the ears.
Mickey Mouse is now a playable character in Disney Infinity, though I do question why he's being released in such a format because we already know he has a "Sorcerer's Apprentice" figure that came out with the first Infinity, which is his primary flaw. Two Mickeys? That's just going to leave poor Minnie confused as to which Mickey she's talking to!
His figure design and voice actor (Bret Iwan) is perfectly fine, and I do enjoy his super move. But, the characters he's getting support from are not like the figures, but more like the townspeople. I know Donald already has a figure, but I'm just hoping that Goofy is down the line for a release.
I'd say Mickey is a good addition to add, but I do wish it was Goofy instead. We need more Goofy. Also, as a personal suggestion, I would like Disney to publicly release the King Mickey Power Disc given away at D23 Expo so we can collect all the power discs.

Inside Out Makes For a Little Fun

Disney Infinity 3.0 might be a Star Wars game, but that doesn't mean that other franchises can have a little fun. Look no further than Pixar's smash hit, Inside Out, who have given us a little side-scroller video game to break the lightsaber wielding tension. And no, there are no lightsabers in this playset.
The story takes place after the events of the movie, where Riley Anderson's emotions are still keeping Riley's mind going. But, when she falls asleep after a 24-hour kitten marathon, a scary movie is accidentally turned on right before she closes her eyes, which sends her subconscious into chaos. Now, Joy, Anger, Fear, Sadness, and Disgust have to put Riley's mind back in order before she gets up.
What's really fun about this game is that it feels like a cuter version of a classic Mario game, keeping Inside Out's creativity and warmth and combining it with the nostalgia of the most beloved video game of all time. Each mission involves collecting, puzzle solving, and plenty of funny moments, especially in the dialogue from the different emotions, to offer up something less intense than a Duel of the Fates moment.
The figures that come in this playset are Joy and Anger, who both give a unique stand in the game. While the bubbly Joy comes all around with happy moments and lines to try and keep things positive in everything she does, Anger just does whatever he's in the mood for, and honestly doesn't care about what happens. Of course, when he does care, he has a Hulk-out moment that could give the green goliath a run for his money, especially if anyone collected a Hulk figure from 2.0. And no, you can't use Hulk in this playset.
I really don't have any complaints about this playset, so I think everyone should get it, even if they didn't enjoy Inside Out. If you did, then get this. It's worth every penny.

In Time, a New Hope Will Arise...

After the cancellation of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars", I, like many, was disappointed that Disney let the series go out rather than finish right up into Episode III. But, when they foretold that they would have their own series that will answer key questions about Episode VII, I had to check it out. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed.
The show, Star Wars Rebels, takes place 5 years before the Battle of Yavin (which means it's 5 B.B.Y. in Star Wars chronology), and the Empire holds a tight grip on the galaxy. The planet of Lothal is one of them, and they are forced to endure the brutality of the Empire. For 14 year Ezra Bridger, a con-artist and street rat who bears some resemblance to Aladdin, surviving on the streets is easy for anyone who knows how to fool a Stormtrooper. But his resistance gets himself caught in a larger rebellion against the Empire, and is now working with the crew of the spaceship "The Ghost" amongst others who hold the Empire in disregard. There's Kanan, a Jedi in hiding, Sabine, a Mandalorian with a knack for graffiti and explosions, Zeb, a Lassat with a short temper and a habit of hurting Stormtroopers, Hera, a Twi'lek pilot that leads the crew, and Chopper, a grumpy astromech droid who's supposed to be the polar opposite of R2-D2.
The series' strong points is its connection to the greater Star Wars lore, from the Clone Wars and beyond. Mentions towards Order 66, the Great Jedi Purge, and the actions the Empire took really give a reason to why the Rebellion was formed in the first place, and it even gives more insight towards Bail Organa's own role in creating it. Not only that, but the character development is well thought out, and the relationships between the crew of the Ghost is as meaningful as it can get.
The villains themselves pose a genuine threat. The cold and cunning Agent Kallus has proven himself to be a worthy adversary equivalent to that of General Grievous. The mysterious Sith Inquisitor makes himself out to be much like Darth Maul, in that the truth surrounding his origins and what capabilities in the dark side he has keep us guessing for all season. Even Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader appear in the show, as do some special guests (I'm not saying who, but Clone Wars fans will be very pleased)
It's true that Rebels is no Clone Wars, but its a worthwhile show that I would highly recommend. Just play close attention though. If the fan theory is to be believed, Ezra may become Episode VII's main bad guy, Kylo Ren, and this is the place to check out that possible descent to the dark side.

Since this little green master of the force appeared in "The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980, everyone has wanted a Yoda in their home. Today, Disney Infinity has given us just that, with a Disney Infinity figure for the 3,0 edition that's all the more reason to buy this game.
In terms of design, Yoda is very well done. His features are reminiscent of the Clone Wars TV series, as is his combat skills. One of the many highlights of the prequel trilogy was Yoda showing off his skills, despite the fact he's well over 800 years old. Being a powerful Jedi Master, this figure adds a sense to give a younger Yoda his due. Not only that, but the fact he's actually a main part of the story rather than in a supporting role makes his inclusion even more exciting.
Voicing the Jedi Master once again is his Clone Wars actor, Tom Kane. Channeling his inner Frank Oz, Kane gives Yoda his voice in a way to show his wisdom amidst the turmoil of the Clone Wars. The tone in his words shows that, despite his confidence in victory, Yoda fears that the Jedi may fall into madness because of the toil of war.
My only complaint with Yoda is his cameo appearance in the "Rise Against the Empire" playset, where he appears as a Force Ghost alongside Ben Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, despite the fact that he was omitted from this playset's story. But, given the fact that Yoda is a well known character, I'll let it slide, and recommend you add Yoda to your collection as soon as possible.

Lone Ranger Today, Tomorrowland Tomorrow

Tomorrowland is another Disney movie that has recently been released, but much like John Carter and the Lone Ranger before it, Brad Bird's family feature film based on a section of Disneyland failed to take off at the box office, becoming one of 2015's major flops. It proves to be a shame, since a talented director that gave us "The Incredibles" and "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" had a film that didn't quite live up to its potential. So, in a money loss that Disney had hoped to be a success, we get a power disc pack equivalent to that of the Lone Ranger playset from the first Infinity, in that it was supposed to be a promotion for a film that turned out to be better than the film itself.
First off, I'm glad that Disney finally decided to stop using blind bags for power discs. Not only were they frustrating when you got dozens of repeats that possibly no one else wanted, but you could never get all of the power discs you wanted. This is a worthwhile change that makes the price seem very fair.
Second though, the power discs themselves are fine. There aren't super fun in any way, but at least they do provide some entertainment. It's not as fun as making a Nightmare Before Christmas world, but still, it can be fun with the futuristic skies that gives us a possible look into what the future is.
Overall, it's not the best, but the Tomorrowland disc pack is worth it. Just hope Disney doesn't release an Adventureland movie anytime soon!

An Elegant Figure For a More Civilized Age

Amongst the legends of Star Wars, none stand out quite as tall as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Draped in Jedi robes of old, he has been an icon in Star Wars since his appearance on the big screen in 1977, and was popularized even more thanks to the prequels, where Ewan McGregor gave a worthwhile performance to match Sir Alec Guinness. Now, he has joined Disney Infinity where he belongs.
The character himself is well designed, holding an appearance from his looks in "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" from season 3 onward, looking much like he did in "Revenge of the Sith". Kenobi holds a sort of grace to his figure, as it holds Kenobi's familiar stance and lightsaber in hand that, despite being covered, still looks like the lightsaber that Luke Skywalker would take inspiration from years later when building his second one.
In terms of voice acting, James Arnold Taylor steps back into the role he very well portrayed in "The Clone Wars" and other projects. His skill at capturing McGregor's portrayal is a perfect example of his talent, and it adds even more nostalgic feeling to seeing the one who taught us to use the force for the first time.
My only complaint is that there is not one, but TWO Obi-Wan's in the game: the playable one from the prequel era, and the older one from the original trilogy. I know Disney only wanted to have a young Obi-Wan since Ben Kenobi let himself die at the hands of Darth Vader, but it's a little disappointing that Ben isn't playable. Maybe someday, but who knows.
Obi Wan Kenobi lives once again, and he is a worthwhile figure to add to the Disney Infinity Collection.
