Ace Ventura: Pet Detective remains a hilarious film. When Nature Calls. Still, I might as well state up front that, despite its bigger budget and glossier production values, I find the Ace Ventura sequel to be a dull and conventional comedy, enlivened only occasionally by a flash of Carrey's trademark insanity or a setup that actually pays off, which is the exception.

Time travel may be the "McGuffin" of X-Men: Days of Future Past, but it's a fun device that allows for some gentle skewering of a bygone age while bringing together a coterie of X-Men young and old, but under Singer's assured direction and without any distracting time travel paradoxes to muck up the works, everything zooms along swimmingly to a satisfying if (again) perhaps too overly convenient finale.

We Can Rebuild It

A collective groan greeted the announcement that MGM was remaking RoboCop, followed by howls of protest at the news that the remake would be rated PG-13. Director Paul Verhoeven's 1987 original famously pushed the limits on gore and goo. Director Padilha may have lost the ratings battle, but he won the war of ideas. A devoted fan of Verhoeven's Robocop, though Padilha's film borrows key story points, and his film is studded with affectionate references to the 1987 original, several critical differences radically transform the story
Paul Verhoeven's 1987 RoboCop remains an unsurpassable classic, partly because it came first and partly because Verhoeven's cheerfully offensive visuals have a unique panache that no one else could hope to equal. But Padilha's 2014 version offers its own pleasures, if one approaches it with an open mind and doesn't expect it to replicate the Verhoeven experience

A Stallone Hidden Gem

As in the original film, Jack Carter (Stallone) is an enforcer, but now he works for a major Las Vegas gambler and bookie named Fletcher (singular), who is never seen but is voiced by an uncredited Tom Sizemore. Jack calls himself a "financial adjuster", which is to say he collects unpaid debts. He is secretly involved with Fletcher's girlfriend, Audrey. When Jack learns that his brother, Ritchie, has died in a drunk driving accident, he returns home to Seattle for the funeral
Stallone's film is a great entertaining but minor entry in his filmography. The best scenes in it are those with Caine and with Rachel Leigh Cook, each of whom brings out emotional shadings in Stallone that we don't often see.

Defenders of the Original Text will neither be pleased nor amused, and find Jackson has taken several steps too many to energize the second entry in his trilogy. The more you treasure Tolkien's work, the more your distaste for The Desolation of Smaug will grow as the film hurtles toward its action-packed end.
As a film, particularly as the action-oriented midpoint of a much larger action-fantasy trilogy -- Jackson's second chapter works quite spectacularly
If you can't wait to add both the theatrical and extended cuts to your collection, you definitely won't regret the purchase. However, if you're more careful with your BD dollars, you may want to wait for the Big Bad Edition due this November.
