Great, well produced show

Pros: It is produced by Michael Bay!
Cons: It is produced by Michael Bay!
I write the above with my tongue in cheek; Mr. Bay is, rightly or wrongly, sometimes accused of letting the action scenes drive the shows/movies in which he is involved. However, Hank Steinberg(Without a Trace), Steven Kane, Paul Holahan, and, Michael Katelman also are executive producers. With these men, the emphasis is always on the story, with action scenes backing, not driving the story. This 3rd Season continues with the adventures of the USS Nathan James, and her crew. It also shows the behind-the-scenes political maneuvers, and, the problems in Asia that the new govt. in the USA must, and, is facing. It ain't pretty. The challenges are many; and, the solutions are drastic at times. The difficulty of doing this in a season of 10-12 episodes is met by the producers(all of them); and, they bring us a nice, taut, and surprising season, and, do it well. This is a great summer show; I look forward to watching Season 4. This is highly recommended!

Dark, dark, dark, Part 2

I titled the review this way as I had reviewed Season 1 earlier. This is the season where we meet many of the villains and heroes of the Batman genre. We meet a young Jim Gordon of the GCPD, Harvey Bullock, and several of the villains at the beginning of their crime careers. This set is the DVD; not the Blu-ray. This may not be as bad as one might think as the lower resolution of DVD may give the program more of a "film noir" look that Bruno Heller and the other producers want to achieve(that doesn't mean that I won't buy the Blu-ray versions)(and, you shouldn't hesitate to buy them either). Episode 1 starts with the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne. We meet Bruce Wayne as a 10-12 year old boy; and Alfred as the butler who becomes his guardian. The break out star of this season, though, is easily Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin. His rise becomes the major subplot of the season. The episodes all help tell the story and lead to Season 2's furthering of the Batman and his villains origins and motivations. The special features are the same on both the DVD and Blu-ray sets. Both have the short bits on how the actors see their character(s).
I can highly recommend this to everyone!

A fun ride
on March 3, 2017

This is a fun movie; it is very much like one of the Disney rides. The producers did a lot of research on both the pre-Revolutionary War period and after; as well as the stories about the Knights Templar treasure. It is obvious that both the cast and crew had fun while making the film. It works because the cast takes their roles seriously; this helps make the whole movie work. Many of the little gimmicks(such as the glasses "made by Ben Franklin") work as the framers did have interests in these sort of things. Did they actually create a "treasure chamber"? No, of course they didn't. The movie also works as it is a mix of the conspiracy, treasure, and history genres; and, again, the producers did a great job of combining them(using a lot of humor in the mix as well).
One thing that I would have liked as a special/bonus feature is a trivia track(or two) to run with the movie to help explain where they digress from fact to fiction, what discovery(ies) by the various framer(s) helped inspire the movie's gimmicks, etc.. This is minor, but, would have been fun. This is a good movie; lots of fun, some real historical info is in there(you have to dig them out; but, that is part of the fun.), and, it is fine for the whole family; without it having the feel of a "just for the kids" film. I can recommend it highly.

Dark, dark, dark, but, so interesting and great

Season 2 of "Gotham" takes up where Season 1 ended. This show is intended to be the 'back story' of the villains and heroes(besides Batman) of Gotham City. I was not aware of just how corrupt it was. Now I, and, you, know better. A TV reviewer(whose name escapes me) stated that the story(ies) of the villains are more interesting than the heroes. I can't disagree. When it was being broadcast; the season's theme was "Wrath of the Villains". The producers did a good job of fulfilling that theme. A good number of the villains who will face off Batman in the future are featured; and Dr. Hugo Strange also makes his appearance. Bruce Wayne comes closer to finding out who killed his parents and why. The program goes from strength to strength. Jim Gordon's past is shown. Even Harvey Bullock gets a lot of time in the light(and is coming out as a very good cop). I cannot recommend this show and this season enough. There are also a LOT of special/bonus features with this season. Some are only a minute or two; some are up to 20-30 minutes or more. There is a lot to explore beyond the episodes; take the time to do so; you won't regret it.

The first season of a classic program

Pros: Transfer to Blu-ray makes it look better than ever; the DTS HD 7.1 surround sound adds nice "punch". Original mono is available as well. Hey, it is "Star Trek: The Original Series, Season 1"!
Cons: Mostly minor: special effects not as "special" now, but, good for the time.
The transfer of this series to Blu-ray has resulted in it being and looking better than it was when it was first shown on NBC back in the '60s(I am old enough to remember watching it then). While the special effects may not hold up to today's standards; they were pretty good for a rather unsophisticated audience. It was the story/plot that was the important part of the show. The late Gene Roddenberry used his show to talk about the issues of the day(which a lot of good and bad science fiction has done for over a century); and used the show to good advantage. The special features consist of a feature going over the re-mastering the video and audio of "Star Trek(all three seasons)"; "All Access(PIP interviews and commentary, etc.)", the home movies by Billy Blackburn, various 'Easter Eggs', interviews and profiles; these all help fill out what made ST:TOS work. Highly recommended!!

Good suspence and thriller

I missed this at the theaters; but, found this in the bargain bin at Best Buy. While it is not a "great" film; it is a good one. It does have some problems(the dragons eating the ash as food; I do have a background in biology, and I can't see how they can get much nutrition from ash); but, tries to get around that by just sort of mentioning it in passing. The explanation for the fire breathing is more believable(two glands in the mouth). The movie is somewhat slow until the appearance of the American militia group; then the pace picks up. The actors(Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey) do a good job of bringing their characters to life; and, showing the differences between them. Rob Bowman(of X-Files fame) does a good job of directing. The direction that the movie goes is not easily predicted; and a fair amount of suspence does occur. I can recommend this film; but, it could have been a bit better.

A great dark comedy

I saw this film when it first came out in the '80s; I thought it was a funny film. It is a dark film in some ways(deliberately so); but, it has several great moments. Billy Crystal's author who has to teach; Danny DeVito as the guy dominated by his mother; and the dynamic that puts them together makes for a classic comedy. It is a play on an old Hitchcock movie(which is viewed in the film by DeVito's character, Owen) forms the basis of the relationship between the two. Even after almost 30 years; the movie still holds up. I found this in the 'bargain bin' at Best Buy; it is worth twice that for the entertain value. I can highly recommend this to all.

The frontier town of Defiance houses a rebel community dedicated to restoring some semblance of normal life after an alien invasion that occurred more than three decades earlier. Now 2046, a drifter-turned-lawman (Grant Bowler) and the recently appointed mayor (Julie Benz) contend with the many prejudices and politics that exist between the alien human residents of earth.

One of Syfy's best original programs
on May 11, 2015

Pros: Excellent video transfer and sound.
Cons: No commentary on any episode
The premise of this program is simple: Alien Invasion! AAAAGH! Okay, that aside, this show has gone far above the basic. The aliens originally started their journey when our science and technology were still primitive compared with theirs. They reached us at a state where if we couldn't build; we could understand what their tech was. A war between the two started and nobody won. Now it is 30 years after their arrival and both must now pick up the pieces and build a new political, and social order.
The program details how one such town/village/city is attempting to recover from the war; and, how it is interacting with the outside world; while trying to build a new legal, economic, and social order. The conflict between everyone is as old as time itself: Everyone has his or her own agenda; some are hidden, others are open. Like much good science-fiction; it showcases modern problems in different ways. It also presents outside challenges(the buried ship, an alien "god", etc..) that are threatening their town, and the world. Their is also, the Earth Republic which is pressuring the mayor to join it. A lot going on; but, it is not so confusing as to overwhelm the viewer. Season 2 is a must watch; Season 3 will be on in a few weeks. The reality is how personal bonds are the most important. Watch this show! You will be glad that you did!

A classic!

Almost everyone has seen this; so will confine my comments to the transfer. This movie has previously been released on Blu-ray(and DVD); the sound format was PCM 5.1(and, quite good); the video was just slightly better resolution than the DVD. The video for this one is clearly better than the previous offering. The special features for this one are the same as the first Blu-ray offering. If you have the original "Special Edition" DVD of "The Terminator(a 2-sided disc)"; I would advise you to hold on to it as it has a number of Special Features(or Bonus Features) that were not transferred to either of the Blu-ray editions. This Blu-ray uses the DTS-HD Master Lossless 5.1 format for the movie. The sound and picture are great! I can recommend this most highly!

In this update of Washington Irving's classic tale, Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) wakes up in the 21st century but finds his 18th-century nemesis, the Headless Horseman, has also come along for the ride. After a local sheriff (Clancy Brown) is killed, Crane teams up with Det. Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) to sort out the mystery and its historical implications, though her supervisor, Capt. Frank Irving (Orlando Jones) is skeptical of all the supernatural shenanigans. And as Season 1 unfolds, these otherworldly events include encounters with menacing demons, frightening explorations of purgatory and impending visits by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

This program is from the same guys who brought you "Lost", "Person of Interest", "Hawaii 5-0", and the "Star Trek" re-boot. It involves magic, the Book of Revelations, the Free Masons, and George Washington. It is a wild ride; and, a lot of fun. The Blu-ray transfer is spot-on; and the sound is nice and clear. I cannot recommend this show enough! The special features add a lot of the background; and how they produce the show. I am looking forward to Season 2 on Blu-ray.
