No Fitbit will measure Tennis swings or anything like that. The Surge can be set to aerobic and it will measure your heart rate and take into consideration your number of "steps" during the activity and will slap out a calorie burn figure at the end. This will also count towards your activity minutes for the day.
The surge comes preset with a number of workouts that it tracks (e.g. run, hike, elliptical, spin, etc.). You can then add additional shortcuts using the Fitbit App. But all in all, when I use it for spinning it simply calculates the length of my workout x heart rate x weight x height = Calorie Burn
