Good, but not great

The Franchise shows some fatigue (there are better stories and better animation out there), but as each new installment is about 3-4 years apart, the fatigue is not as glaring. The characters are still fun to watch; except the annoying Crash & Eddy. One thing about this series is that always bothered me is how much wandering there is. The characters are never settled. There are some funny moments and Sid is the best character for that. Good wholesome fun, although it always feels a bit lonely in the settings; the movies are worth the pick up for your kids.

This is miles better than the built-in sound that comes from Samsung 65" The Subwoofer has good bass, without being too "deep" and this does a better job of balancing talking with music (especially when running a Blu-Ray disc)

A Classic Approach Is Refreshing

Let me begin by saying, 'I am a life-long Peanuts fan. I am only in my 30's and wasn't even born when the most famous of Peanuts movies were first aired on TV. But I've read almost every comic created by Charles Schultz.' That said, this update to the world of Charlie Brown & Friends was done right. It manages to blend the perfect amount of nostalgia and familiarity with its new storyline. It's immediately recognizable as a Peanuts movie. Yes, it retreads some of the concepts from the old TV specials, but that only serves as a great introduction to a new generation of viewers (beautifully modern graphics and all). So many "updates" to classic cartoons or tv shows get it wrong. They forget what made the originals great to begin with. In exchange, we get a terrible story or someone else's narrow vision of the old material or some slapped-together consumer sellout project. Hey Hollywood, shiny graphics aren't enough to make a vintage product relevant for a new fan-base. That's what makes the Peanuts story so balanced. Their new movie could have been made 60 years ago or today and it would still work. It beautifully updates an old formula, while honoring what made the original movies so beloved. The creative team should be recognized for getting it right. If you need another recent example where an old formula gets remade correctly; look to the new Star Wars film. A great revisit that connects the original trilogy: It pays homage, yet still stands on its own. I hope there are more Peanuts movies like this one going forward. There are enough movies out there that look great, but have no heart. The new Peanuts has a ton of heart. And might I add: 1) It is SO refreshing to watch a family film that is clean (no crude or rude behavior needed). 2) It's also fortunate that Peanuts is void of the eye-rolling pop-culture references that makes other movies irrelevant two months after their release. The best movies avoid those traps and stand the test of time for it. Peanuts proves both can be done and still entertain. I highly recommend!

This movie should be either 4 hours long or broken into 2 movies. To stretch out the Hobbit story into 3 movies has done two things:
Created a need to "add" to the story, wherein you lose the flow of the original book & you've created side stories that just aren't necessary or interesting
You also make this first film feel like an overly long trailer. Anyone who has read the book will wish the story moved along faster. You know where it is headed and there just isn't enough to fill up the time between the beginning and the end to justify the extra plot lines.
Here is how you should approach watching the Hobbit to fully enjoy it. DON'T compare it to the book. I enjoyed it much more the second time around when I threw out the idea that this was J.R.R. Tolkien's Hobbit. This is Peter Jackson's Hobbit. He is a victim of his own success. He did such an amazing job with following the Lord of the Rings so closely (Those movies, aside from the omission of Tom Bombadill & other creative lee-ways, were so nearly what I envisioned in my own imagination when I read the books) He also had a LOT more material to work with in the LotR series. 3 movies made sense, because you had 3 books worth of characters and plot to work from. Here, there just isn't enough to warrant the length. So, go into with the mindset that this is a completely different revision of the story altogether and you will enjoy it more for it.
The LotR was dominated by its characters and falling in love with each of the Fellowship's personalities. You related & cheered for the brotherhood of friendships that existed: Be it Samwise's fierce loyalty for Frodo or the humor of Legolas & Gimli's friendly rivalry.
Here in the Hobbit, by the end of the movie you will find yourself still trying to just match a name with each dwarf. "Now, is that Nori or Dori? Wait, what is Dwalin's role again? I'm confused." With as much length as Peter Jackson gave this movie, he should have scrapped the made up stuff about an albino orc warrior and focused on allowing the audience to get to know each dwarf's personality better. Shoot, even Snow White's dwarves at least had their obvious attributes.
This film is gorgeous to look at, although too much CGI is relied upon. Jackson may have taken a page out of Michael Bay's book on this one. Eye candy over story when it should always be story first, eye candy second. I enjoyed how Jackson used the beauty of his homeland, New Zealand to be his backdrops in the original series. Here, too much of what you see is clearly green-screened. It disconnects you from believing in this fantasy world where the LotR, at times, made you think there really could be some place called Middle Earth out there.
In conclusion, I enjoyed it and will certainly look forward to the 2nd and 3rd films. I just didn't fall in love with it like I did with the Lord of the Rings. It is definitely Jackson's own version of the Hobbit with a few familiar pieces mixed in and not Tolkien's. I am hoping that the long "editing" time from filming all 3 movies at the same time will allow Jackson the needed self-reflection to make the 2nd & 3rd films much better than the first (as was the case in the LotR series)
