Jennifer Love Hewitt (Heartbreakers, Party of Five) stars in the comedy drama Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber as Katya Livingston, the young advertising executive of the title. A "cutthroat exec" determined to make good by scaling the corporate ladder and knocking down everyone in her path, Livingston nonetheless reveals her softness of character and sensitivity when she accidentally allows her ambition to thwart the relationship she shares with the great love of her life, Charles Fitz (Colin Ferguson), and ultimately must take a stand against the greed and shallowness of corporate values to try to win Charles back. Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber co-stars Natassia Malthe, Joey Lawrence, and Melissa Rivers as herself.

John McTiernan's box-office dud The Last Action Hero comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English, Spanish, and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a second English soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. Spanish and Korean subtitles are accessible, and the English 5.1 track is closed-captioned. There are no special features, but the inexpensive list price, coupled with the superb sound and visual quality, may help this film find the audience that turned it down in theaters.

Their relationship may have more ups and downs than the Coney Island Cyclone, but that won't stop Steve (Russell Crowe) and Monica (Salma Hayek) from giving it their best in Warner Bros.' DVD release of this touching contemporary romance. The feature is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and accompanied by audio rendered in closed-captioned English Dolby Digital Stereo or French Dolby Digital Stereo with optional English, Spanish, or French subtitles. Abundant bonus materials include six additional scenes/outtakes, audio commentary by director Robert Greenwald, cast/director/writer film highlights, and a theatrical trailer.

This single-layered DVD version of the film includes two viewing options, one on each side of the disc: widescreen anamorphic (in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio) and full-screen standard (1.33:1). Audio options are limited to English Dolby Digital 5.1 with English, Spanish, and French subtitles (closed-captioning also included). Production notes are the only special or bonus features included in this edition of the film. Picture quality is exquisite, high-resolution and sharply detailed and delineated, with excellent contrast and natural coloring. Sound quality is also excellent, with a wide range of resonance and excellent sound effects, tracking, dialogue quality, and fidelity, especially to the musical score. The DVD case's cardboard cover includes a chapter index.

Allan Moyle's drama about a high-school pirate radio maverick, Pump Up the Volume comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and is preferable in every way to the standard full-frame image. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include trailers, and filmographies for the cast and crew. This is a fine disc from New Line.

The past is history in the time-bending action remake The Time Machine. Dreamworks has done a very nice job at making sure this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is as close to reference quality as they come. With an array of well-saturated black levels and sharp, crisp, colors, this is a very solid transfer that should please fans. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in French and English, DTS Surround in English, and Dolby 2.0 Surround in English and Spanish. Both the DTS and Dolby 5.1 mix are very bombastic and striking with directional effects utilized during almost every scene. All aspects of the dialogue, effects, and music are free of any excessive hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles. There seems to be a century's worth of extra features on this disc, starting with a commentary track by director Simon Wells (who is also writer H.G. Wells great-grandson). This is a very light track that features sports many stories about the film's troubled production and history. Three making-of vignettes take the viewer behind-the-scenes for a look at how some of the special effects were created ("Creating the Morlocks," "Building the Time Machine," and "Visual Effects by Digital Domain"). An HBO "First Look" is also included which features clips from the film and interviews with the cast and crew. A single deleted scene allows the viewer to catch a very brief glimpse at what was left on the cutting room floor. Finally, there is a short sequence on the fighting in the film, a section of archives which includes nearly 100 images of the conceptual art, some paltry production notes, filmographies, and trailers for the film.

The Time Machine is a somewhat sad movie about a man that loses the love of his life on the day that he asks her to marry him. He desperately tries to develop a time machine to go back and prevent her death. This movie is a great movie to watch with a loved one because it makes you feel save to know that your loved one is so close and nothing can happen to them.

John Milius' Reagan-era cold war adventure film Red Dawn comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and is preferable to the standard full-frame image. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include the original theatrical trailer, production notes, and trivia. This is a solid, though unspectacular release from MGM/UA that is appealing at its inexpensive list price.
