for those not familiar with the work of tori amos, one could say that little earthquakes is the perfect place to begin. while by no means a commercial album, this one does carry universal appeal & seems to be the one that most tori fans fell heart & soul for. the other albums are great too but this is the one that turned me on to her complete body of work that would unfold in the next 16 years. little earthquakes is everything that a solo album should be. it's intimate, it's clever & it posesses that fiery passion which lets the listener know we will be hearing much more from the artist in the near future. one could even go so far as to say that tori amos is writing songs which are inspired by our diaries if we didn't know any better. yes, she is the real deal. her experiences & wisdom are every bit as necessary as the piano she plays so beautifully. tori also has the gift of a lovely voice. i would gladly state my pick of picks as far as tracks go here but every song is a winner. you simply cannot go wrong with any track on this album. if you have never purchased a tori amos album, you really need to get this.

this is one of those films that everything you have ever heard is probably true. yes, cannibal holocaust may be one of the most revolting films ever to be shown in any theatre & it's perhaps one of the powerful pieces of cinema as well. how can that be? strangely enough, cannibal holocaust has somehow managed to have maintained qutie the cult following through the years. if you are going to check it out, viewing cannibal holocaust in the privacy of your own home is the best way to go. it's grisly, it's sick, & it's perhaps the most mean-spirited film ever made but it really does make one re-examine our culture & human nature. man perhps is the most savage beast on the face of the planet & we witness this in gory detail in less than two hours. after your senses have been mutilated by this film, you may wish to have dinner with a close family member/ friend. there is animal cruelty presented here, gruesome scenes of cannibalism, & countless encorachments which will leave many a viewer completely disgusted. thankfully, there is an option to watch cannibal holocaust without the animal cruelty. there are some really great extras here too such as some interviews & previews of other grindhouse classics. a must ahve if you are into this kind of film or if you apprecaite grindhouse cinema at it's best.

kelis must be one of the most underrated artists in the r&b scene today & wanderland is a clear statement of how enormously talented she truly is. sadly, most of the casual fans in the states only know her for the milkshake song & wanderland i still only available as a pricey import. needless to say, any true kelis fan knows this chick has far better songs on her cds than any we are apt to hear blasting on the local radio stations or on mtv. it's very hard to classify kelis. yes, the majority of her sound could fall into the trappings of alternative even though she is billed as an r&b artist. kelis also has one of those versatile voices that can switch up on you at any given moment & make you shake your head in disbelief. from her smoky chanteusse style (which could be compared to a jazz or folk singer) to her sly wax coated r&b side, probability suggests there is very little in the music industry which would be remotely foreign or untouchable. it's been a long time since we've had the pleasure of experiencing one female so versatile & the comparisons to neneh chewrry or lauryn hill are bound to fly like spaceships but kelis seems to have the capability of re-inventing her sound to stay afloat in today's music industry. or she has connections with the greatest producers who simply know how to bring out her greatest talents.

icelandic/ italian artist emiliana torrini made a departure from her days of electronica/trip hop with this second outing released about four/five years after her first release. this time around she is really going for the mellow. there is plenty of laidback acoustic guitar & the soft sound of the sea . there is even a sound of a boat rocking to give it that full effect. fans of the first album may have a hard time adjusting their musical taste to embrace this one but it's a rewarding listen nevertheless. my only general complaint is that fisherman's woman is too brief & could've been a little bit longer in my opinion.

after nearly twelve or thirteen years of silence, kate bush returns with a vengeance & gives us her latest masterpiece. although i still prefer the hounds of love or some of her earlier works, this one far better than her last outing in 1993 entitled the red shoes. kate makes it clear to us that she can still hang with the big dogs after all these years & that she can still make great quality music. yes, aerial is two cds filled with new material. i wish i could say that she would grant us all one last tour but that dream will never come true unfortunately. we still have her old records to play & the latest musical blessing but no given promise of any future tours nor anymore recordings to follow aerial. why kate? ok, so let's not be completely ungrateful. i was thrilled to see this cd hit record stores nearly two years ago & it made the top ten list of best albums for me that year. i mean, albums you simply couldn't pass up. all of the tracks are praise-worthy but some of my favorites are how to be invisible, somewhere in between, & nocturn. one cna only hope she has not hung up her music shoes now. i want another album in the near future atleast this good.

i usually don't enjoy buying live dvds of my favorite groups or artists but this one stands out. despite all the unsupported rumours i'd heard regarding the group's live shows, i invested in this dvd/cd combo & was not at all disappointed. in fact, it actually made me want to catch the next live show whenver they roll through my state. from the opeing track, evanescence doesn't waste anytime & knows aexactly what their audience craves most. they performed like this was the last show of their career & or like their music simply was going out of style. amy lee's voice sounded wonderful & i was left in awe of how talented she is to be sooo young. the band played most of the songs off of the fallen album & a few actually came from their solo cd which has never been made available to record stores (to be the best of my knowledge). there is even the surprise cover of korn's thoughtless which the band actually perfects. whether you love the ballads or the rockers, evanescence has it all waiting for you here. if you only buy one of their cds, this is just as good a starting place as any. see them in their glory live.

believe it or not, i actually would rank this as one of my all-time favorite cure albums right next to head on the door & ofcourse disintegration. if you love the cure & all their moody love songs or simply can't resist hearing robert smith, you probably already know what i'm talking about. in fact, this could almost be served as a sequel of sorts or follow up to their masterpiece disintegration as it covers similiar territory & addresses that same sense of dread. while quite beautiful in some places & not utterly depressing by longshot, no one will ever admit to playing the cure cds for a crowd of party goers. having said that, robert smith still sounds as good as always does & the songs are a welcome return to the band's form. i don't really have any favorite songs on this particular cd & yet there are no tracks to skip. bloodflowers may be the best record that they've recorded in many years & easily gets constant rotation in my cd player.
In this unforgettable debut film from Quentin Tarantino, a group of perfect strangers have been assembled to pull off the perfect heist. Meticulously planned, nothing can go wrong. But it turns into a bloody ambush when one of them turns out to be a police informer. As the group begins to question each other's guilt, the simmering tensions threaten to explode the situation before the police have a chance to step in. Boldly blending graphic violence with comedic references to popular culture, RESERVOIR DOG ushered in an often-mimicked style of filmmaking in the 1990's. Director Quentin Tarantino Star Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Chris Penn, Steve Buscemi Special Features Widescreen , Bonus Shorts, Deleted scenes, Documentary, Featurettes 100 Minutes Year of 1992.

not everyone in the independent film industry has the luck or the success that tarantino has with his first calling card. surprisingly, this one still looks good even after 15 years have elapsed. leave it to lions gate to give this film it's proper upgrade with a spiffy tin gas can case & a matchbook sleeve with spindle for the dvd. ofcourse, all the extras are here. you guessed it. the previews, deleted scenes, etc. what more could you want? the film was great upon initial viewing & still looks good today. i can highly recommend fans of this film or those who like gangster/ heist films take notice if you haven't already seen this. while not the best work tarantino has ever done, you won't feel cheated after viewing this one. the dialogue is still funnier than ever in that trademark tarantino way & the characters are still amusing after numerous viewings. i often refer to reservoir dogs as scarface on laughing gas.
Venture, if you dare, behind the bamboo curtain and into the dark and alluring mysteries of the Far East where centuries-old traditions remain shrouded in superstition and fear. Bizarre rituals and unbridled morals walk hand in hand and unbelievable and shocking truths lie in wait for the unsuspecting. See the merciless therapies of the Brown Monks, learn the truth about the Philippine faith healers, witness the 1001 wanton and exotic pleasures of Asia's nightlife and visit the City of the Dead with it's secretive spiritual cults all in Shocking Asia II - the Last Taboos.

if you are simply looking for something appaling or something that make your skin crawl like faces of death, look elsewhere. shocking asia 2 is nowhere near as graphic & actually bears more resemblance to the old docu films made in the mondo world series which was somewhat popular in the sixties. there are still a few scenes which will take some viewers out of their comfort zones but the vast majority of the film is no more violent or intense than an episode of ripley's believe it or not. there is a bit more flesh or adult material here however so viewers may not want to play this one for the whole family. viwers interested in other cultures or possible taboo facts will do far worse than shocking asia. i have purchased copies for myself & friends. all of us agreed this was definitely a fascinating series which prompted many discussions during our get togethers.
This typically florid (and atypically luxurious) adaptation of the Marquis de Sade's novel from Eurotrash auteur Jes~s Franco gets a loving treatment on DVD from the genre enthusiasts at Blue Underground. Presented in its uncut 124-minute form, Justine has been given a letterboxed transfer to disc in the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.66:1, which has been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The transfer is superb, with the images looking rich, clear, and colorful from an exceptionally clean print, and it's doubtful the film ever looked this good in its grind-house engagements in the United States. The original monophonic audio mix for the film has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono, and it sounds enjoyably crisp, making the most of Bruno Nicolai's score. As usual, Blue Underground has added several bonus features for fans, including a short subject on the making of the film (featuring very entertaining interviews with Franco and producer Harry Alan Towers), the film's French trailer, a gallery of production photos and advertising artwork, and finally a text biography of the director. Blue Underground wasted little time in establishing itself as one of the most quality-conscious outfits releasing classic genre cinema on DVD, and this superb-looking disc is a fine example of what they do so well -- it's an absolute treat for Franco fans.

jesus franco has made hundreds of films since the mid-sixties that even he probably can't remember all the times. unfortunately, most of them aren't very good films & many could be construed as a complete waste of time. on the bright side, this is one of his best efforts & won't waste anyone's time. yes, justine is flawed & inconsistent as one might imagine but still worth a look. if you can imagine walt disney & marquis de sade comparing notes for ideas on possible screenplays, the results would be as uneven as justine but still likable nonetheless. the performances range from average to good & some of the dialogue is a bit embarassing at times. aside from that. justine is overall a great story if not a slightly bent coming of age story. justine ask the age old question that many have had to face in their lives. if the chips were down & you were struggling, would you rob someone else of everything they had to get ahead or would fall victim to scoiety and all of it's unruly inhabitants.
