if you liked maynard in tool but always hoped for a lighter sound, a perfect circle is the group for you & thirteenth step is a must have cd. maynard is the unique mind behind the band here & he has even brought a few familiar names in the music industry to make up this contraband. james iha, twiggy ramirez, & maynard to name a few give us a startling vision which all at once brazingly honest without being too aggressive. listeners may actually find themselves amazed at how great a vocalist maynard is. some of the songs sound like dave gahan at times in his later depeche mode days but the cd never drifts into total, danceable euro-elctronica territory. most of the handiwork here features a milder version of industrialism which was once only associated with trent reznor of nine inch nails. it's hard to tell what most of the songs mean unless you have read up on the group before listening to the cd but the musical arrangements here are indeed on point & the cd will keep you wanting more. if this cd satisfies, perfect cirlce's first album mer de noms is also awesome.

alright, i know you've heard the name by now. the hit single crazy has been played to death by everyone everyhwere unfortunately. now don't get me wrong-it's a great single but the magic didn't stop there. cee-lo green has crafted the album spectacular for the century. but is it r&b? rap? hip hop? rock? it's none of the above & all of the above. makes perfect sense, right? ofcourse, it does. if you loved that song, you really would be missing out on some other great stuff by writing off the album as mainstream or as a one hit wonder. st. elsewhere is much too innovative to be ignored & probability suggests we will be hearing a lot more of gnarls barkley in the future. so what can you expect here on this cd? expect the unexpected. the whole album wreaks havoc with your brain & keep you tapping your foot all the while. if you can picture gorillaz recording their next album with the violent femmes & david bowie, you might come up with something as energetic or upbeat as the st elsewhere album. this is perhaps the best album we've had the pleasure of hearing in all of 2006.

ok, just call me a big kid at heart but i loved this film & have seen it many times in the theatre & on dvd. tim burton has always made amusing films but this one ranks right up there with nightmare before christmas in my opinion. i wish this film were longer than 72 minutes but that's just small potatoes. the lead characters are likable in that genuine but quirky way that only tim burton can visualize. corpse bride even makes the viewer sympathize with the deceased young woman rather than the actual bride to be. at times even a bit heartfelt or touching, corpse bride manages to appeal to a wide variety of film-goers. the stop motion animation is clearly a work of genius too. although the film may be a wee bit too scary for yuonger audiences, the bigger kids will love it. there are sheer moments of laughter, suspense, & even a shy romantic interlude to please the grown-ups. corpse bride shouldn't be missed. quite simply, there is no reason not to own this film.

Terry Gilliam's adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is given the deluxe treatment on this lavish two-disc set from Criterion. The film is presented in a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Stereo, and DTS Surround. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Gilliam, a second commentary track by stars Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro along with producer Laila Nabulsi, a third commentary track recorded by Thompson, historical information on the people portrayed in the film, a 1978 BBC documentary about Thompson, a collection of artwork by Ralph Steadman, a documentary about Thompson in Hollywood, and Johnny Depp reading from Thompson's extensive correspondence. This is a truly spectacular disc from Criterion that sheds light on the filmmaking process as well as the real life people that inspired the book.

on the opening week of this release in theatres, the critics nearly massacred the work much to my disbelief. thank goodness this brilliant work of genius terry gilliam & hunter thompson has managed to have an incredible shelf life in the video media world. criterion has even gone so far as to release an incredible set for serious fans of the film to re-experience. needless to say, it looks fantastic & is definitely a great investment. this is, by far, johnny depp's most bizarre yet versatile role & everything else could almost pale in comparison. you won't even remember edward scissorhands or the tv show 21 jump street after watching this. fear & loathing excels in being disturbing, frightening, & hilarious all at once. one is never certain whether they should be panicky or trembling with laughter. do yourself a favor & grab a copy today!! why wait???

i'll have to admit that i've never seen scenes from a marriage so i wouldn't be qualified to compare the two films unfortunately. i think i was a bit too young to have seen any of bergman's other films in the theatres & had thought for many years that he retired after making fanny & alexander. to my surprise, he gave his latest masterpiece a couple of years ago & it's yet another jewel in his crown. bergman has always had an ear for excellent dialogue & saraband is no exception to the rule. what i found perhaps most fascinating other than the obvious two leads who are phenomenal was the performance of karin played by the young julia dufvenius. where on earth did ingmar find her? this, by far, is one of the most amazing performances i've ever seen? why didn't she receive the oscar is beyond me. oh well, foreign film fans everywhere can rejoice & only pray that ingmar will bless us again with more films before he retires from the film industry again.

this film reminds me of myself in so many ways. as soon as i heard this was going to be available on dvd, i made immediate plans to own it. sadly, we no longer have the luxury of seeing kieslowski films on the big screen & awaiting his classics to arrive on dvd but we will have the memories of his greatness on dvd. once again, criterion has done an amazing job of transfering this magnificent film to dvd & allowing fans to relive the work all over. there are some nice extras here such as interviews, some rare short film, & an a companion booklet. irene jacob is simply luminous in her double role. everytime i see this film, i notice something different & look forward to discovering it again. the images are simply gorgeous & the music is perhaps one of the most haunting scores i've ever heard. if you love films which explore peoples' destinies & fate, you wouldn't want to miss the double life of veronique. fans of great french cinema would cherish this one.

John Cameron Mitchell, who created a cult sensation as writer and director of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, blazes a brave new trail with this comedy-drama which combines the stories of a handful of emotionally unsatisfied New Yorkers with some of the most explicit sexual material to ever appear in a mainstream motion picture. Sofia (Sook-Yin Lee) is a couples' therapist who has a major relationship problem of her own -- she's never had an orgasm, and her husband Rob (Raphael Barker) doesn't seem capable of giving her one. Sophia's clients include James and Jamie (Paul Dawson and PJ DeBoy), a gay couple who have been together for five years and are beginning to grow tired of one another. As James and Jamie discuss the possibility of bringing another man into the bedroom, Sophia accidentally mentions her problem, and they tell her of an upcoming "Shortbus Party," a sexual free-for-all in which straight, gay, and lesbian couples are all welcome to either talk about sex or take a more active role in the main ballroom. As James and Jamie hook up with Ceth (Jay Brannan) for some mutually satisfying action at the bash, Sophia experiments with Sapphic diversions, and begins to truly find herself when she encounters Severin (Lindsay Beamish), a professional dominatrix. However, while Sophia begins to find what she needs with Severin, she discovers that while Severin is able to casually enter into a sexual relationship, she's never been able to emotionally commit herself to someone else. Shortbus was screened in competition at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival. ThinkFilm's packed DVD release incldues everything from trailers to making-ofs that cover the production as well as how to shoot a sex scene. Deleted scenes have also been supplied with optional filmmaker and cast commentary, with an additional commentary included for the feature film. The sound and picture have been mastered for the home theater thanks to its 16:9 anamorphic 1.78:1 widescreen image and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround audio track.

rather than being praised for it's bravery & honesty in a time of lackluster cinema, all we hear is how explicit or graphic shortbus is & how shocked everyone is. first & foremost, there are some very graphic scenes here & you may wish to skip the film altogether if that offends. if you can get past this, you are in for a ground breaking independent film with some real heart. john cameron mitchell must have the midas touch. after hedwig & the angry inch, he made another wonderful film & didn't suffer the sophomore film curse. in fact, i might even like one a little bit better. shortbus focuses on the lives of several young people who are having problems in their existing relationships or simply struggle with own identity. they meet at a nightclub by the name of shortbus to discuss their lives, engage in very adult activity of nearly all kinds, & to shed light on their basic instincts. throughout the course of the film, we see various character portrayals which identify some very tortured souls with unclear direction in their life. by the end of the film, we see them in completely different ways. a film to admire, a film to share, & a film to watch over again. much recommended. i was definitely moved.

wherever i traveled towards the end of 2005 & the beginning of 2006, devendra was definitely with me. everyone around me was subjected to his musical charm whether they liked it or not. cripple crow was just that good. it was quite simply the best folk album we never heard in the late sixties or seventies. devendra is quite simply too young to have grown beside this genre of music but yet he possesses the ability to create that homegrown sound. whether he is rambling incessantly about the idiosyncratic & the quirky or simply giving his honest views about war in general, devendra manages to hold the listener's attention through 20 some od tracks. i could easily see fans of the beatles, cat stevens, & woody guthrie flocking to the store on this note. hey, even bob dylan or santana fans would probably dig a great deal of the material here. no disappointments to speak of.

the most underrated & overlooked album of all time

you've heard the name. you've heard the voice. you probably never heard this cd or even knew it existed but you have definitely missed something amazing. many thanks to whomever thought to re-release this album as it deserves a second chance. most of us probably remember linda when she fronted the defunct band 4 non blondes in the early nineties. after parting ways, she hooked up with producer bill bottrell to produce this masterpiece which was released in the latter 1996 on the interscope label. sadly, very few people knew of the release &eventually the album went out of print. linda perry was forced to go independent. doesn't this just kill you? if there was ever any question as to how talented or innovative ms. perry was, this album is a great reference point. forget the albums that she produces for everyone else. this was the real mccoy. in flight is a grand example of the energetic world ms. perry encompasses with grace. hear it for yourself before it goes out of print again.

another reason to seek out out independent artists

anyone could see why the music industry is currently stagnant when everything on the radio sounds about the same. one could even go so far as to say that it's rather saddening when there are so many talented artists out there making great music who may never be acknowledged by either mtv nor your local radio stations. after listenint to artists like ani difranco & dar williams for years, i grew to dislike the radio offerings more & more. jonatha brooke is another example of underrated independent brilliance. from the opening track, she kicks off a ear grabbing song entitled linger. ok, great track. good voice. hold on! it just gets better & better. by the time you arrive at the last track of steady pull, you are simply hitting the repeat button on your cd player to relive the experience again. while ms. brooke could easily be classified as a folk artist, her music toys with pop rock & even a hint of reggae or torch music. this album could easily have garnered some crossover appeal radiowise if only someone knew about it. buy one for yourself or someone you love. in fact, buy two!!!
