An Iron Maiden MUST for any Metal fan!
on October 27, 2008

This is a surprising little maxi single from Iron Maiden, being that "Hallowed Be Thy Name" & "The Trooper" are newly recorded live. Both songs were recorded live for "The Zane Lowe Show" on BBC Radio 1. As the the backside liner notes state, these two recordings were first transmitted on September 13, 2005. The songs sound like vintage Iron Maiden, only with a more earthy, live Metal club mood. The songs structure have not changed, they are still as Maiden Metal as ever. "Different World" is the single taken from the album "A Matter Of Life And Death", Maiden's most recent studio album released in 2006. "Different World" is a perfect introduction to the newest Iron Maiden album, the proof is in the listening to this Maiden gem. It rocks heavy and steady, proving Iron Maiden has not slowed down for anyone after all these years. This is a must addition to all Iron Maiden and Metal fans collections. These maxi singles are few and far between and are a real bonus when they do get released! Like this maxi single "Different World", you are getting two tracks that are really not available on any other Iron Maiden album, due to their re-recorded versions. Plus, the Eddie artwork on the front cover is worth the purchase alone.
What's great about it: Iron Maiden, "Hallowed Be Thy Name" & "The Trooper" are newly recorded live
What's not so great: no complaints

Poison'd is cover songs that are pure fun!
on October 27, 2008

Poison are one of the true survivors of the heavily laden Hair Metal days of the '80's. I like any Rock & Roll survivor, I like Poison'd. The songs are really catchy and hook & riff saturated. "Little Willy" by Sweet is covered here with pure adrenaline, a great way to start off the album. "Suffragette City" by David Bowie is covered awesome as well, Poison rips through this song with abandon and it sticks. However, with all albums that are cover song based, there never seems to be enough newness to really get you psyched up and begging for more. Musically, especially with any genre of Metal, I need to absolutely be knocked off my feet with a cover album. "Just What I Needed" by The Cars is another standout song here done well. "Your Momma Don't Dance" by Loggins & Messina is the song that finds me singing the lyrics an hour later. I have always enjoyed listening to CC Deville play guitar, he is a quality player at that. The liner notes are 12 pages of band photos, song credits, and more credits. There are no lyrics in the liner notes. Overall, Bret Michaels, CC Deville, Bobby Dall and Rikki Rockett have created an album of cover songs that is good, clean, Hair Metal fun!
What's great about it: Catchy, melodic, riff laden Hair Metal, CC Deville on guitars
What's not so great: Nothing new to startle the musical senses

Queensryche covers their favorite tunes.
on October 27, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
I have bought Queensryche's albums and have seen them live going back to the 1980's. Obviously I am a fan of Queensryche, purchasing "Take Cover" was the right choice for me. What I am missing here is just a touch more heavieness on the songs, "Innuendo" and "For The Love Of Money" are two examples. "Odissea" sounds very much like an operatic song to me, Geoff Tate does pull off quite a moving performance on this one. My favorite songs on this album are "Neon Knights", "Welcome To The Machine" and "Synchronicity". These three songs are stamped with the Queensryche sound and heavienss that I was expecting and have grown used to. Geoff Tate is superb on all the songs, he can hit the high note with the best of them. Musically, this is a sound album, diverse it is. The liner notes list each song, detailing why it was chosen for "Take Cover" and by which band member. There are no lyrics in the liner notes, many credits can be found. For those expecting a knock out of non stop Metal, you will be surprised to hear the diverseness of music and song on "Take Cover" and it is not a bad experience at all.
What's great about it: Geoff Tate on vocals, fabulous musicians, "Neon Knights" is heaviest
What's not so great: Could have been heavier, not a non stop thriller

A complete collection of duran duran hits!
on October 26, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
duran duran "Greatest" makes for a complete collection of all the hits and songs of importance for a New Wave band that had and still has strong musical talent. I always respected the vocals and showmanship of Simon Le Bon. duran duran are legitimate musicians, that can never be mistaken. This "Greatest" album showcases a plethora of vocal ranges and music from ballads like "Save A Prayer" to infamous New Wave rockers like "Hungry Like The Wolf". "Ordinary World" shows how duran duran set themselves apart from other New Wave bands of the '80's. This song bestows how duran duran stayed current musically, while still maintaining their recognizable sound. duran duran "Greatest" crosses over many musical moods, you can dance, chill out or flat out rock to this album depending on the song. The liner notes come without lyrics, credits for each individual song are listed. The one constant musical theme you will find here is that duran duran will entertain with their music, keeping the genre of New Wave alive and well for new generations to explore and enjoy.
What's great about it: 19 songs, all the hits, New Wave music with musical integrity
What's not so great: no complaints

A beautiful Christmas album sung by Mariah Carey!
on October 26, 2008
Posted by: Fiend

If you are looking for a sentimental, delicate and gold laden voice to sing the Christmas classics this holiday season then purchase Mariah Carey "Merry Christmas". You will be so pleasantly entertained and pleased by the reverence and care Maria gives to these songs. There are 10 Christmas classics in all here. "Silent Night" starts the album off, with Mariah's tranquil and elegant vocals giving this song the decadence it so deserves. "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is so inspirational and high spirited due to Mariah's vocal delivery, the manner in which Mariah sings this song gives me instant goose bumps every time I listen to it! "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" has in essence, the same emotional effect as "All I Want For Christmas", thanks to Mariah's gifted ability to bringing such life into these songs. The more traditional "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" and "Joy To The World" are also celebrated by Mariah's impeccable voice. The more somber "O Holy Night" is performed by Mariah with eloquent perfection. "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)", "Jesus Born On This Day", "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing/Gloria (In Excelsis Dea)" and "Jesus Oh What A Wonderful Child" rounds out the song list. You will certainly delight in listening to Mariah Carey singing these Christmas songs. You will find that Mariah Carey makes it impossible for you to not embrace the tenderness and joy that she gives to these songs.
What's great about it: 10 Christmas classics covered by the golden voice of Mariah Carey

Few metal bands can claim to have left such an indelible mark on this history of the abrasive-but-beloved musical genre as Motorhead, and in this release of a 2004 performance at D~sseldorf, Germany's Philipshalle, Lemmy Kilmister and company storm the stage to show the current crop of wannabe rockers just how it's done. In addition to twenty fist-shaking Motorhead classics including "Ace of Spades", "Overkill", "Dancing on your Grave", and "Whorehouse Blues" performed live, this release also offers a special look at the fans, the band's backstage rider, the work that went into the thundering live performance, and a special featurette showcasing life on the Motorhead road crew.

Motorhead Stage Fright is the total package!
on October 26, 2008

I have purchased many different Motorhead concert videos over the years, "Stage Fright" is light years better than the rest. Along with the legendary Motorhead, you are getting the finest quality in all aspects of a concert dvd, the sound, filming, concert angles (there is a multi-angle feature in the bonus material), 20 songs, tons of interviews, testimonials, the road crew and even the cook! You will even see and hear from the road crew member who made famous the Motorhead phrase, "everything louder than everything else"! Now that is covering the total Motorhead story! Lemmy, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee are amazing musicians, you will see them at the Philipshalle in Dusseldorf, Germany, in a very large arena, that showcases just how super powerful a Metal force they truly are! A dvid rom is part of disc 2 which features the "Overkill" high definition track and Motorhead wallpaper for your pc. From "Metropolis" to "Sacrifice", the song selection is overwhelming. It is simply impossible to grow tired of "Stage Fright", there is simply a bounty of great Motorhead stuff on here to enjoy. Treat yourself to the best Motorhead dvd out there today, I did and it served me right!
What's great about it: Sensational film angles, quality sound, 20 songs performed, bonus material

Blind Guardian Fly is on all metal cylinders!
on October 26, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Blind Guardian "Fly" peaked my curiosity from the articles I have read about them and the album artwork on their releases. Going in, I knew they are a Progressive Metal band, with intellectual lyrics and story telling with their songs. I am pleased at purchasing "Fly", all 3 songs are diverse, with my favorite being the cover song from Iron Butterfly "In A Gadda Da Vida." Blind Guardian's version is heavy, it rocks tough and hard, with no unusual changes to the songs structure. Blind Guardian if anything, makes this song sound more macabre and melancholy, with the vocals and music sounding more haunting than the original. "Fly" is a more open ended Progressive Metal example, with the vocals being more punctual and deliberate. "Skalds and Shadows" is an acoustic version of it's original, musically you are surrounded by an almost medieval atmosphere of mood and senses, making for a rather interesting and curious listen. I am impressed by the way vocalist Hansi Kursch changes and adapts his approach according to the individual song, this type of diversity in singing is appreciable. There obviously is enough talent shown here on just 3 songs. The liner notes are 8 pages with full lyrics and credits. With the musicianship, vocals and diversity of song, I am more than eager to check out the back catalog of Blind Guardian. I recommend "The Fly" to all Progressive Metal fans. Fans of heavy music should appreciate what Blind Guardian is creating here as well.
What's great about it: 3 diverse songs, excellent cover of "In A Gadda Da Vida"
What's not so great: no complaints

Dokken "Unchain The Night" is an 80's Metal ride!
on October 25, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
For starters, Dokken "Unchain The Night" went gold when it was released back in 1986 on vhs. The re-release now includes 4 bonus videos - "Walk Away", "Dream Warriors", "Heaven Sent" and "Burning Like A Flame", plus a recent interview with Don Dokken and Mick Brown together. This interview proves to be both candid and insightful, regarding topics such as musical points of view and touring. The videos will definitely take you back to the '80's, when you would wait to see these Dokken videos be played on television. Everything from the hair & fashion to the way Dokken would pose while performing for these videos, give it that '80's metal gloss and sheen all over it! It's not just fun to watch, it is the music of course that really makes the videos and Dokken does not disappoint at all. George Lynch being a key part of all the music and videos is what makes this so nostalgic. George Lynch's guitar licks with Don Dokken's vocals made for a formidable one-two punch back then. The backstage and touring footage will give you a vantage point of seeing Dokken uncut and informal, which is a cool thing. The special effects and animation in "Dream Warriors" and "Burning Like A Flame" were attention grabbing then, they will still entertain now. There is no liner notes or booklet to be found, however, the added 4 bonus videos with the Don Dokken & Mick Brown interview more than makes up for it. Dokken fans need to add this cool dvd to their collection. New fans or Metal fans in general should enjoy the music, storytelling and backstage content, after all it is an '80's history lesson in this genre of Metal.
What's great about it: 11 videos, all the music, Don Dokken & Mick Brown interview, George Lynch
What's not so great: no complaints

A live Quiet Riot experience that is cool to own.
on October 25, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Quiet Riot left their stamp on the world of Heavy Metal, that is for sure. Quiet Riot is credited as the first Heavy Metal band to have a billboard #1 album! That feat alone has commanded my respect for Quiet Riot. This "Extended Versions" is a live album that sounds great, the production is tops and the song selection is impressive. The more often overlooked tracks such as "Danger Zone", "Run For Cover", "Anytime You Want Me" and "Let's Get Crazy" are here. What would a Quiet Riot live album be without "Slick Black Cadillac" and "Bang Your Head (Metal Health)", the well known super hits are here as well. Realistically and historically, Quiet Riot started the commercial success of early 80's Hair Metal and if you are like me, it is still Metal no matter how you slice it! The liner notes have limited information and credits with no lyrics. Photos of Frankie Banali (drums), Rudy Sarzo (bass), Carlos Cavazo (guitar) and the late Kevin Dubrow (vocals) are found in the liner notes. Truth be told, these guys could play some catchy, hook driven, melodious, and at times, crunchiest Metal of the day. "Bang Your Head (Metal Health)" was for me, the Heavy Metal anthem for all of us metalheads during the early 1980's. It was a fun song that put Metal on the charts for good. Kevin Dubrow definitely had a unique voice, his enthusiasm, vocal talent and Heavy Metal persona will be missed by this metalhead. This purchase is an easy and smart choice for all Hair Metal and Metal fans. You will own a superb live performance from Quiet Riot, plus you will add a historical Metal band to your collection at the same time.
What's great about it: A fine live production, sounds great, cool song selection
What's not so great: no complaints

AC/DC flexes their Metal muscle on this one!
on October 25, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
I have to say that "Blow UP Your Video" is the third greatest AC/DC album fronted by Brian Johnson, right behind "Back In Black" and "For Those About To Rock, We Salute You". Honestly, this is an album that turns up the Metal excitement meter to override! From "Heatseeker" to the last track, the energy level that AC/DC pumps out is exhilarating! "Go Zone" showcases Cliff Williams on bass, the song is bass infused and has an incredible stomp and roll thumping sound that entertains all the better when played loud! Angus Young is phenomenal throughout, his leads and power chords are what makes this entire album quake with the Bluesy, Metal thunder that AC/DC is legendary for. Simon Wright is on drums for "Blow Up Your Video", he plays like a seasoned pro and is a talented member of the AC/DC family. Brian Johnson on vocals is what you expect, his raw, gutsy and gritty approach to singing has and never will change, thank goodness for that! Brian Johnson makes these songs so great! The liner notes are loaded with band photos, a written documentary about this album and credits. No lyrics are in the liner notes. Enjoy this album now and you will find yourself enjoying this album years later, it is that powerful!
What's great about it: All 10 songs jam & rock, Angus Young is brilliant on guitar
What's not so great: no complaints
