Queensryche is live and POWERFUL at the Moore!

Now this is the Queensryche I have grown up with and have appreciated for decades! Quality sound, music and everything else in between with this release! This 2 disc live performance was recorded at The Moore Theater on October 13, 14, and 15 of 2006, in Seattle, Washington. The first disc is the entire album of "Operation Mindcrime" played live. Operation Mindcrime is one of the best Progressive Metal albums ever made, Queensryche brings it to incredible musical Metal heights here with unparalleled power. Disc two is the complete album "Operation Mindcrime ll" performed live, it is really good. Both albums are concept albums, it does not matter if you follow the story lines or not, the music Queensryche created here is overwhelmingly psyche up your adrenaline Metal! The encore has two of their well known tunes "Walk In The Shadows" and "Jet City Woman". These two songs, after hearing them live, will have you scrambling for Queensryche's "Empire" album. It is a cool thing to hear the crowd sing along to "Jet City Woman", it makes you wish you were there! I always say, if a Metal album gives me the chills then it is a winner, "Mindcrime At The Moore" will always be on my winner list. Geoff Tate is brilliant on vocals, the rest of the band let's their music do the talking!
Queensryche is: Geoff Tate on vocals, Michael Wilton on guitars, Mike Stone on guitars, Eddie Jackson on bass and Scott Rockenfield on drums. The liner notes are 8 pages of fabulous concert photos, along with tons of cool credits. There are no lyrics in the liner notes. I endorse "Mindcrime At The Moore" to all Queensryche and Metal fans worldwide, this is how a live Metal album is done right!
What's great about it: Great live performance, all the music is incredible, 2 albums performed live!
What's not so great: NO complaints!

A cool greatest hits from Foreigner
on November 12, 2008
Posted by: Fiend

Foreigner "Hot Blooded And Other Hits" is not a bad album to grab, especially if you do not own any Foreigner on disc. This is a good sampling of Foreigner's past hits, memorable hits at that. These Hard Rock veterans are still at it to this day, albeit with a new lineup led by original & founding guitarist Mick Jones. Foreigner are at their best with the Hard Rock tunes, in my opinion. I never could grasp the ballads from Foreigner, that is the reason I pick "Waiting For A Girl Like You" as my least favorite song on this album. It is too bad the classic tune "Double Vision" was not added into the mix here, it would be a great replacement for any ballad. "Hot Blooded", "Urgent", "Cold As Ice" and "Jukebox Hero" are the songs that showcase the heavier side of Foreigner, these are the songs that have me listen to Foreigner in the first place. I find myself listening to this disc often enough to say I have never grown tired of these Foreigner classics.
The original Foreigner lineup; Lou Gramm on vocals, Mick Jones on guitar, Ian McDonald as saxophonist, Dennis Elliot on drums, Al Greenwood on keyboards and Ed Gagliardi on bass. The liner notes contains a nice abbreviated history on Foreigner, (2 pages), bits of info that makes good Rock & Roll trivia.
What's great about it: Song selection, Hard Rock classics that have aged well, Lou Gramm on vocals
What's not so great: "Waiting For A Girl Like You" is not my favorite Foreigner song

A Nazareth concert & video package done very well!
on November 12, 2008
Posted by: Fiend

Nazareth "From The Beginning" is simply a must buy for all Nazareth fans. This is a nifty package of Nazareth goodies, you get a 13 song concert, 7 music videos and photo galleries of each band member including the entire band. You are getting 20 different songs to hear and see performed! Since 1968, Nazareth has treated us all to a Hard Rock plethora of music, with moments of Heavy Metal (which I really like) such as "Hair Of The Dog". The cover song "Love Hurts", (originally by the Everly Brothers), is the biggest radio hit for Nazareth and definitely performed here. You will see there are so many solid Hard Rock songs to enjoy as well. "From The Beginning" goes deeper into the Nazareth catalog of songs, an inspiring look and tribute to an influential band. The concert is top notch quality, both sight and sound. Manny Charlton gives an introduction before the concert, insight from the original guitarist is a real treat. This concert brings to light how hard working, hard Rocking and blue collar Nazareth was and still is. This concert is from the late '70's, and I really enjoyed it. The 7 music videos are from 1977-1980, these are videos done well before the '80's video revolution, therefore you will see real Rock & Roll videos done at a more raw, informal and natural state. The photo galleries are as advertised, photos that depict each band member in various settings and moods. Nazareth, as you will see them here are: Manny Charlton on guitar, Dan McCafferty on lead vocals, Pete Agnew on bass & backing vocals and Darrell Sweet on drums, percussion & backing vocals. There are no liner notes or lyrics with this dvd, only credits and a brief intro on the dvd box. This dvd is worth picking up, it will not collect dust in my collection, that is for certain.
What's great about it: Live concert with 13 songs, 7 music videos plus photo galleries, Quality throughout
What's not so great: No complaints

Queensryche at their live best!
on November 12, 2008

Queensryche "Extended Versions" is a decent live album from this veteran Metal band. Geoff Tate on vocals sounds fine, the band plays these songs live with a powerful sense of pride. This album is really a live greatest hits, for the song selection is top shelf material from the Queensryche catalog. "Walk In The Shadows", "Jet City Woman", "Silent Lucidity", and "Eyes of a Stranger" are the Rock radio staples that have kept Queensryche in the forefront for years. I appreciate the decision for "Queen Of The Reich" being on this album, it is performed brilliantly here, with the speed it is famous for. This is the song that realistically launched Queensryche into Metal stardom, "Queen Of The Reich" is obviously my favorite track here. The overall sound quality is fine, there are no unnecessary noises or feedback to distract your listening. There are no liner notes unfortunately. I have no problem referring Queensyche "Extended Versions" onto all Hard Rock and Metal fans worldwide!
What's great about it: A live concert album, quality sound, song selection is like a greatest hits
What's not so great: No complaints

It's Heavy Metal Ratt n' Roll!
on November 11, 2008
Posted by: Fiend

I am proud to add Ratt to my Metal collection, they belong there. Ratt has on this "Metal Hits", 10 cool '80's Hair Metal songs that are riff laden with fun lyrics. Ratt brings their L.A. Sunset Strip style of Metal with thundering bass and drums, not to mention the guitar leads and solos you will hear throughout. This signature Metal sound is still being replicated today by many bands. Ratt has stood the test of time, in my Metal opinion. "Metal Hits" includes a few of Ratt's deeper album tracks which are "I Want A Woman", "Nobody Rides For Free", and "Lack Of Communication." The original Ratt lineup: Stephen Pearcy on vocals, Robbin Crosby on guitar, Warren DiMartini on guitar, John Croucier on bass and Bobby Blotzer on drums. The liner notes have 2 pages which condense the history of Ratt, any Metal history is cool history. I urge any fan of Heavy Metal to add this "Metal Hits" of Ratt to your music collection. There will be those moments you want to hear that one particular Ratt song, and it will be there and ready to be played loud!
What's great about it: 10 of Ratt's best songs, cool '80's Hair Metal that is melodic and fun!
What's not so great: No Complaints

Motley Crue delivers the Metal!
on November 11, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Moltley Crue is a strong, heavy and catchy album. I really miss Vince Neil on vocals with this album. However, I am not and never will take anything away from vocalist John Corabi, he has had a respectable career and is Heavy Metal. This is a different version of Motley Crue, with John Corabi actually performing up to the task. John has his own unique vocals, they are gritty, at times growling and glazed over with plenty of Metal and Crue attitude! John Corabi is a true musician as well, he plays acoustic guitar, rhythm guitar, and 6-string bass on this album. "Power To The Music", "Hooligan's Holiday" "Droppin Like Flies" and "Hammered" are four favorite tracks of mine, they showcase just how different this version of Motley Crue sounds and plays, it is cool stuff. Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars and Tommy Lee are what you come to expect on this album, they epitomize what L.A. Sunset Strip Heavy Metal should sound like. I endorse this album "Motley Crue" to all Crue fans and Heavy Metal fans alike, anyone unfamiliar with John Corabi should receive new found respect for this Metal musician & vocalist.
What's great about it: Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars & Tommy Lee, a real heavy album, very catchy songs
What's not so great: Vince Neil is not the vocalist on this one.

Vintage live Dokken from 1981!
on November 10, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
If you are a Dokken fan, this is quite the live performance you want to hear. This is the original Dokken lineup of Don Dokken on vocals, George Lynch on lead guitar, Jeff Pilson on bass and Mick Brown on drums. This live concert was recorded while Dokken was still trying to get a record deal in the United States, (1981). There are 3 previously unreleased songs here, "Goin Down", "Hit And Run" and "Liar". All three songs are Dokken Heavy Metal, they are by no means filler material! It makes for a terrific surprise to have this album released by Dokken. The 3 previously unreleased songs alone, makes this purchase worth it. Great Dokken tracks such as "Paris", "Night Rider", "Live To Rock" and of course, "Breaking The Chains" are performed with electrifying energy by the band. George Lynch is a standout here, he will not disappoint when you hear his riffs and leads throughout, along with an explosive solo that is guaranteed to impress! Don Dokken's vocals sound very refined and polished, yet he comes through with the Metal attitude that he has so well defined. Listening to this live performance has me believing in how awesome Dokken was before they were of star status.
The liner notes are the real deal, with band photos and details written about how these concert tapes were found by Don Dokken himself. Dokken writes of the series of events surrounding the time frame of this concert, the information Don Dokken reveals makes for invaluable Dokken trivia. "From Conception Live 1981" is a true found treasure and a great moment of live Dokken music. This rediscovery by Don Dokken is appreciated by this fan!
What's great about it: Quality sound, original Dokken lineup, 3 previously unreleased songs!
What's not so great: NO complaints

Boston created a Rock marvel with Third Stage!
on November 9, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Boston's "Third Stage" is loaded with Classic Rock hits. "Amanda" and "Hollyann" are both smooth paced ballads that rock with their up tempo mood and atmosphere. "We're Ready", "I Think I Like It" and "Can'tcha Say" are the steady Hard Rock winners here that swell with a positive outlook on life and are surefire tunes to get you upbeat. "The Launch" is a dynamo of an introduction to "Cool The Engines", this is the highlight for me on this album. Boston really cranks it out on all musical cylinders with "The Launch" and "Cool The Engines", it is a moment on this album that was meant to get you psyched! Brad Delp is just amazing with vocals on this album, his voice will live on forever with this album and the entire Boston catalog of music.
The liner notes are so neat to read. Tom Scholz (lead guitar & many more instruments) breaks down just how "Third Stage" was created musically and with what recording equipment. Honestly, this write up from Tom Scholz is an interesting and insightful bonus. All the lyrics are found in the liner notes, along with detailed credits. "Third Stage" is an album that I appreciate all the more each time I listen to it, I hope it has the same affect on new Boston fans who buy it as well.
What's great about it: song writing, lyrics, catchy melodies and vocal harmonies that rock!
What's not so great: NO complaints

Twisted Sister has the Christmas Metal spirit!
on November 8, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Since I purchased the Twisted Sister "A Twisted Christmas" CD and immensely enjoyed it, then it was only fitting that I bought the companion "Twisted Christmas" DVD. I am just as immensely thrilled about the concert DVD, the show is entertaining as it is loud. This concert was recorded live at the Starland Ballroom in New Jersey. The crowd and Twisted Sister obviously had fun. What is great about this concert is that Twisted Sister plays their own classic Metal tunes as well as Christmas songs, mixing up the set of songs nicely. "I Wanna Rock", "We're Not Gonna Take It", "The Price" and the classic Metal anthem "You Can't Stop Rock & Roll" are performed with Dee Snider using the stage like an iron man triathlete. Dee Snider has not lost his Metal swagger one bit, he is definitely a showman. All the Christmas songs are played with an awesome attention to melodic Metal detail, Twisted Sister truly treats these Christmas Classics with respect. "White Christmas", "Silver Bells" and "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" are just a few of the Christmas songs that Twisted Sister covers with their Metal talents.
This DVD also includes the music video and animated video for "Oh Come All Ye Faithful". The cartoon for "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" is fun and hilarious. The music video version shows Twisted Sister performing in the living room of an uptight couple who need some Christmas cheer, something you would expect on "A Twisted Christmas". The exclusive interviews are short and Menoza's Choir shows a crowd of people trying to sing the backing vocals for "Silver Bells". I will have this DVD ready to play November to January, if you love Twisted Sister and/or Heavy Metal, you will want this DVD for the holidays as well.
What's great about it: Original Twisted Sister band, playing regular hits as well, music video & cartoon
What's not so great: NO complaints

This is essential Metal Church, incredible album!
on November 8, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
The first release from Metal Church is extremely fast with the attitude of a hungry band of musicians braced for Metal stardom. Released in 1985, "Metal Church" is an old school Thrash & Metal album that belongs in every single Metal fans collection, no question about it. All 9 songs are structured, written and performed to the highest of Metal standards. David Wayne on vocals, makes the songs sound dark and gives each song a vintage Metal bite. The intro to "Beyond the Black" is chilling, with a doomsday rhetoric and atmosphere that grabs your attention instantly. The guitar and bass on the song "Metal Church" sounds like it is leading you down a path of horror, now this is what Metal is supposed to accomplish! "Hitman" is super heavy and thrashes across the board. "Gods of Wrath" is the longest song, at over six and a half minutes, yet you will wish it would continue on! The cover of Deep Purple's "Highway Star" is done so well here it is jaw dropping. Kurt Vanderhoof on guitar, the Heavy Metal hero who still runs the show for Metal Church to this day, is flawless on this album. The rest of the lineup for this debut album by Metal Church is Kirk Arrington on drums & percussion, Craig Wells on guitars and Duke Erickson on bass. A debut Metal Church album that is so intense for its time, so riveting and exact with its delivery of Thrash and Metal, it belongs at the top of the list of all time Metal albums. I feel this album is absolutely relevant to the Metal that is currently released today, it is an album like "Metal Church" that paved the way for today's Heavy Metal genres.
What's great about it: Old school Thrash & Heavy Metal, Kurdt Vanderhoof on guitar, All 9 songs!!
What's not so great: absolutely NO complaints
