Even though I love Heavy Metal and Extreme music, diversifying my music collection is a constant endeavor. Step in, "The Best Of" Billy Squier and it's riff strewn, Hard Rocking tunes. I have always found Billy Squier's songs to be rather memorable, both musically and lyrically. The reason I purchased this album, was due in part to wanting access to his greatest hits, once one of them became stuck in my head. This album does boast some of the '80's most popular radio Hard Rock hits: "The Stroke", "Rock Me Tonite", "My Kinda Lover" and "Everybody Wants You". Billy Squier, for me, is a breakaway from the breakneck Thrash that I so adore, this album gives me a breather without sacrificing total heaviness with the music. Besides, I have always felt a cool heavy vibe within Billy Squires music anyhow. I recommend "The Best Of" Billy Squier to all Rock and Hard Rock fans. For Metal fans who want to shift into lower gear once in awhile, Billy Squier is worth the listen.

I am convinced that this is my favorite Kiss album of all time. "Love Gun" has all four original members, each getting their turn to sing on this one. Paul Stanley gives his harmonious and melodic vocals to "I Stole Your Love" with a touch of Hard Rock angst. "Shock Me" is delivered by Ace Frehley not just vocally, the guitar work here is pristine and quite famous. "Hooligan" is a song by Peter Criss that has the vintage Hard Rock Kiss attitude illuminating from it at all angles! "Almost Human" by Gene Simmons has that dark, Metal touch searing from it from start to finish. "Then She Kissed Me" is the cover song that is by far the most commercial track found here, despite the friendly tone and lyrics to this track it still is Kiss. I owned this album on vinyl going back to the '70's, I still have to frequently listen to it on CD now.
I guess this album has definitely grown on me, it sounds better now than it ever has! The liner notes are really cool, with original artwork of the "Love Gun" and plenty of credits. No lyrics are in the liner notes. New Kiss fans just have to add this album to their collection, veteran Kiss fans should upgrade with a new copy if necessary! Any fan of great Hard Rock albums will appreciate the entire structure, originality and selection of songs found here.
What's great about it: Every song rocks, vintage Kiss lineup

For veteran Metalheads and 70's Hard Rock enthusiasts, Ted Nugent needs no introduction. For new fans to Hard Rock and Metal, please buy Ted Nugent "Super Hits". This is a musical history chapter in how American Hard Rock and Heavy Metal collided to form a potent sound so powerful, it will have you rushing out to buy up all the albums by Ted Nugent. The mid to late '70's obviously was not in any Metal drought musically, not when you had Ted Nugent releasing ten albums containing some of the grooviest, heaviest and most entertaining thunder stomping tunes to ever be heard. "Free For All" with it's catchy opening riff and excitable lyrics are quick examples of the free spirit nature Ted Nugent exemplified with music. "Stranglehold" at over eight minutes long, has such an addicting Metal groove, you will feel it is only a three minute tune! The very famous and lyrically humorous "Cat Scratch Fever" displays why Ted Nugent is so respected and know for his guitar wizardry.
Ted Nugent's vocals, music writing and guitar skills are to be enjoyed and celebrated here, I am relieved that Ted Nugent still performs and records to this day. I encourage all Rock fans to add Ted Nugent "Super Hits" to your music collection. The liner notes are filled with song and album credits, along with a very brief introduction and career timeline of Ted Nugent.
What's great about it: Ted Nugent, song selection, "Stranglehold" & "Free For All"!

If you are looking for the complete greatest hits package of Dokken, you have found it. "The Very Best Of Dokken" includes the best tracks from the very first album "Breaking The Chains up to the 1995 release "Dysfunctional". Dokken is still in the Hard Rock/Metal forefront to this day, providing us with more great current Metal. "Breaking The Chains" showcases the first bassist for Dokken, Juan Croucier, who later joined Ratt. Bassist Jeff Pilson joins on with Dokken with the album "Tooth And Nail", which spawned the great tunes "Into The Fire", "Just Got Lucky" and "Alone Again". I always liked the way Dokken presented ballads. The Metal edginess always lingers throughout all Dokken ballads, "Alone Again" is a perfect example. "Dream Warriors" really rocks, it was part of the soundtrack for "A Nightmare On Elm Street 3" and found on the "Back For The Attack" album. You will also hear "Mirror Mirror" from Don Dokken's solo album "Up From The Ashes", released in 1990. Mikkey Dee plays drums and John Norum plays guitar on "Mirror Mirror". "Mr. Scary" is a powerhouse instrumental played by George Lynch on lead guitar. George Lynch flexes his Heavy Metal muscle here, showcasing why he had become such an influential guitarist and exploits his uncanny talent. George Lynch has since been nicknamed "Mr. Scary" because of this historical Metal instrumental moment. Don Dokken on vocals is sensational, he can sing the heavy stuff along with ballads effortlessly, I have always considered his voice flawless.
To sum up this album, you will no doubt enjoy the way in which Dokken incorporated vocal harmonies, melodies, searing solo's, riffs and leads and melting them together to create some of the most fantastic Heavy Metal the 1980's had to offer. Dokken as featured here: Don Dokken (vocals), George Lynch (guitar), Jeff Pilson (bass & keyboards) and Mick Brown (drums). The liner notes are heavy duty, with 16 pages of Dokken history, band photos, and tons of album credits. I heavily recommend "The Very Best Of Dokken" to any and all Hard Rock and Heavy Metal fans worldwide!
What's great about it: George Lynch on lead guitar, Don Dokken vocals, 16 choice cuts!

I have always steadfastly implored to anyone who listens, that Great White is the greatest Led Zeppelin cover band ever. This is my opinion, even after seeing the fabulous Led Zeppelin cover band Physical Graffiti (hailing from Connecticut) live and up close back in the '80's. Jack Russell is a soulful Metal vocalist, he sings straight from the heart. It is no wonder then, that Jack Russell can sound so familiar to Robert Plant. Musically, Great White nails all the Led Zeppelin songs down, this is a really good and Rockin' album! I highly recommend this album to open minded Led Zeppelin fans, especially Hard Rock and Metal fans who want to hear legendary songs covered by a hard working and talented Great White.
The complete track list on this album is: D'yer Maker, When The Levee Breaks, All Of My Love, Tangerine, Ramble On, Immigrant Song, Stairway To Heaven, Living Loving Maid (She's Just A Woman), The Rover, and Thank You. There are no liner notes here, only the song credits.
What's great about it: Great White itself, Jack Russell on vocals, ALL Zeppelin covers!
This release contains a half-dozen music videos by Megadeth, the band formed by Dave Mustaine after he was fired from Metallica. The promotional clips include "Peace Sells," the Sex Pistols cover "Anarchy in the U.K.," the MTV-approved version of "Hanger 18," "Symphony of Destruction," "Train of Consequences," and "Trust."

If you are shopping for a small package that is loaded with 100% pure Thrash Metal, then Megadeth "Video Hits" will load you up! All six videos are Metal gems, showcasing the Thrash talents of Megadeth. The quality of these videos are second to none. Dave Mustaine's vocals and guitar expertise are what gives Megadeth their signature sound. Enjoying the music along with these videos is a double dose of Thrash Metal goodness. "Hangar 18" has awesome science fiction effects complete with martians. My favorite video here is "Anarchy In The U.K.", it is a fast paced series of animations and images that move along to the frenetic speed of the song. This cover song is done so well, it is my favorite Megadeth tune of all time. I recommend this DVD to all Megadeth fans, especially Metal fans who want a short burst of powerhouse Thrash to view and hear.
What's great about it: Dave Mustaine, "Anarchy In The U.K." video, pure Thrash Metal!

Van Halen's "Diver Down" exemplifies what the 80's Hard Rock and Metal scene were all about, fun and high spirited. This was a time when music seemed a bit more colorful, bright and loud. The Arena Rock generation kicked into high gear with Van Halen, "Diver Down" had captured that mood and energy, mixing in a bunch of fun too. The fun part of this album is "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)" and "Happy Trails". Only David Lee Roth could pull off these songs while fronting the biggest Hard Rock act in the world, these two songs were never meant to be taken serious! A grin and a chuckle is a cool reaction to certain songs, I still smirk to these tunes after all these years! Now, cover songs are always a shady area for any band to do, Van Halen pulled it off with this as well. "Where Have All The Good Times Gone" by The Kinks is not sugar coated here, it bluntly Rocks! "(Oh) Pretty Woman" by the late & legendary Roy Orbison is covered masterfully with a sound that is in my opinion, Metal.
I always felt Van Halen is at times Hard Rock and other times Metal, depending on which song you listen to. Listening to any Eddie Van Halen guitar instrumental such as "Intruder" and you identify the Metal sound instantly. "Hang 'Em High" rocks hard, bordering that fine line of Metal. "Dancing In The Street" is covered with the spirited energy and Hard Rock power that makes this song really soar. To sum it up, yes, buy this album and know you are getting a genuine mix of fun, cover songs, Hard Rock and Metal. What more could you ask for especially if it is vintage 1982 Van Halen!
What's great about it: Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth on vocals, cover songs done excellent

DIO "The Last In Line" is a true Heavy Metal classic. Originally released in 1984, this album belongs in every Metal fans collection. Ronnie James Dio on vocals is a living legend to Heavy Metal music. Dio's vocals cannot be duplicated by anyone, he is simply one of a kind. You cannot go wrong by purchasing this album, every song is Power Metal driven, with sensational lyrics that are as memorable as the song. "We Rock", "The Last In Line" and "Mystery" are the three tracks that get the most attention, yet the remaining tracks are just as dynamic. Dio's vocals truly carry the songs, yet the band here is amazing as well, one compliments the other musically. You will hear how Dio incorporates music from keyboards to deliver the mood and atmosphere that became so symbolic with his music. The band on this album is Vivian Campbell on guitar, Vinny Appice on drums, Jimmy Bain on bass, and Claude Schnell on keyboards. Dio is credited with keyboards as well with this album. In my opinion, this album will only become more popular as years pass, these songs have influenced a generation of bands to play Metal, you cannot deny this kind of Metal genius and greatness.
What's great about it: Ronnie James Dio on vocals, Vivian Campbell on guitar, every song

Children Of Bodom is without a doubt, one of todays leaders of the Thrash Metal movement. Alexi Laiho and his brilliant guitar shredding, the infamous keyboards used throughout, coupled with dark melodies and moods makes "Blooddrunk" an instant classic. No other Thrash band can make it work with keyboards like Children Of Bodom can. Every song is so intense both musically and with the vocals, each song deliberately engages in some of the most aggressive and speed infused Thrash you will ever hear. After each listen to this album, I can only say Whoa! Children Of Bodom fans know what they are going to buy here, for those unfamiliar with COB, well, brace yourself for the loudest, fastest and fiercest Thrash experience that is currently happening today! I especially appreciate the hidden track found here, for it is a cover song of "Ghost Riders In The Sky". I cannot say just how many times I have hit the repeat button for this song, it is that outrageously fantastic! It is a fabulous way to bring an end to this album, with a classic song that you can scream along to and enjoy. Really, COB added their style of Thrash to the scene and have never looked back. I urge all Thrash, Death, and Extreme Metal fans to buy this album and enjoy it like I have.
The liner notes are very cool, (a 12 page multi-fold) with individual photos of each band member and lots of credits. As with all Children Of Bodom albums, there are no lyrics, they are not that necessary when the music is this incredible.
What's great about it: Sensational Thrash, Alexi Laiho on vocals & guitar, every song!

I purchased White Lion "Hits" due to the fact I love all genres of Heavy Metal, I never seem to get enough! White Lion is a Hair Metal band from the '80's that had tremendous commercial success. These 10 hits are a good listen as to what White Lion has to offer, yet deeper album tracks of White Lion are out there that rock. My favorite tune off of "Hits" is "Wait", it just has a great melodic Metal flow about it. The cover song from Golden Earring "Radar Love" is a cool & heavy rocker, this song is another plus here. I am not the greatest fan of ballads in Metal, yet White Lion does have them here and they are mellow. "When The Children Cry" is the most popular of their ballads. Vocalist Mike T. and guitarist Vito Bratta had put together some decent and memorable songs during their time together. The liner notes have 2 pages of a brief history on White Lion that is a tad interesting. I do recommend this album to any White Lion fan of course, as well as anyone interested in Hair Metal bands.
What's great about it: 10 hits that span the career of White Lion, "Wait" is best song here
