Rush "2112" is the embodiment of what and how Progressive Hard Rock is and should sound like. From the layered textures of bass & percussion with "The Temples Of Syrinx" to the heavily emotional, moving and touching ballad "Tears", this album is a masterpiece for all time. Geddy Lee truly proved how talented a lyricist he is with "Tears". "The Twilight Zone" does bestow the lyrics, mood and musical atmosphere that befits it's title. "Something For Nothing" is a tremendous Rock track exploding with pure Rush originality. Geddy Lee is perfection on vocals & bass, with Neil Peart implementing a monumental mixture of rhythmic beats on drums that gives "2112" it's unique progressive dimension. Alex Lifeson only serves to drive "2112" into a progressive plateau of dreamy Rock wonderment, with his signature guitar sounds. Released in 1976, "2112" has proved it is a Progressive Rock album for the ages. I recommend "2112" by Rush to all Rock fans of any genre, without hesitation.
The liner notes are 3 pages of complete lyrics with a few photos of Rush.
What's great about it: Every song, structure, lyrics, song writing, & Rush playing!

Alice Cooper "Extended Versions" is a colossal value of live Metal music. Alice Cooper's creepy, dark, Heavy Metal persona cannot be denied. Alice thrives here on "Extended Versions", showing once again he is the true master of the macabre when it comes to Metal. 1970's classics "I'm Eighteen", "Welcome To My Nightmare" and "Cold Ethyl" are performed like they were just released yesterday! There is never a recycling sound or feeling when Alice Cooper performs such vintage hits. "Poison", "House Of Fire" and "Bed Of Nails" are the 80's hits that pack a punch and deliver the goods. My favorite song on this live album, (and favorite Alice Cooper song ever), is "No More Mr. Nice Guy". This song is really performed awesome live, with Alice Cooper's vocals entertaining every step of the way. The music, vocals and total atmosphere you will here is top shelf. This "Extended Versions" makes for a great start for any new fan beginning an Alice Cooper music collection. For veteran Cooper fans, this is a buy situation. I implore to all that Alice Cooper "Extended Versions" is a great value!
The liner notes are limited to the song listing with respective credits. The liner notes do state that this live performance was recorded at "Birmingham National Exhibition Centre: London, England on 12/13/1989 to 12/14/1989 and Cincinnati Gardens: Cincinnati, Ohio in 1990".
What's great about it: Alice Cooper, every song, all live performance

"The Yngwie Malmsteen Collection" is such an incredible album of Yngwie's greatest hits, it should appeal to a wide cross section of music enthusiasts. Guitar players, Metal fans, Power Metal fans and those who just want to enjoy listening to incredible guitar playing. This collection of songs are taken from Yngwie Malmsteen albums released from 1984 to 1990. The passionate way in which Yngwie Malmsteen plays guitar sends shivers down my spine! Yngwie's guitar will speak to you, he is that good. At times Yngwies picking is ferocious, other times as mellow as a moonlit sky. Yngwie's classical musical background is really brought to life through his Power Metal style of guitar. Yngwie has had a few outstanding lead vocalists over the years, Jeff Scott Soto is the vocalist on "Black Star" and "Far Beyond The Sun". Joe Lynn Turner (former Rainbow vocalist) is the vocalist on "Heaven Tonight" and "Hold On". Mark Boals is the vocalist on "Queen In Love", "Liar" and "You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget". The solos you will hear throughout are stuff of guitar legend, Yngwie Malmsteen is a guitar player that will mesmerize you! It has never been about the speed at which Yngwie plays, to me it is the beautiful music that is created with melody and harmony that comes straight from his soul. I highly recommend "The Yngwie Malmsteen Collection" to anyone who appreciates listening to remarkable guitar playing and melodic Power Metal.
What's great about it: 14 choice hits, Malmsteen's guitar playing, Joe Lynn Turner vocals

I have no problem referring, endorsing and recommending Kiss to anyone. Kiss is truly a historical Hard Rock/Metal band that created some of the most memorable and Rockin' tunes in the 1970s. All of these songs on "Double Platinum" are pre-1979, no songs from the "Dynasty" album on forward. This is a definitive greatest hits of Kiss that will compliment any Hard Rock or Metal collection! You get to hear some incredibly influential Hard Rock songs, Paul Stanley with "Detroit Rock City", Gene Simmons with "God Of Thunder", Peter Criss with "Beth" and the guitar brilliance of Ace Frehley throughout every song. Some deep album cuts are on "Double Platinum" that need to be heard: "She", "Black Diamond", "I Want You" and "100,000 Years" are unbelievable with the heaviness! "She" is actually my pick for the best song here, it is a song that has some Hard Rock grooviness, it is a hidden gem! I feel no Rock fan of any genre can go wrong with the purchase of "Double Platinum", again it is 20 songs that helped mold Hard Rock & Metal history.
What's great about it: 20 Hard Rock classics, pre-1979 Kiss

This unbelievable Thrash release from Over Kill, "Immortalis" could be considered the heaviest, most ferocious album they have done. Over Kill has always been heavy with all of their albums of course, yet this album has that sheen of creepy darkness with the lyrics, coupled with what seems to be extra power in the music from all angles. I absolutely cannot state any harder or louder what an amazing Thrash band Over Kill is. After 25 years of wearing the badge of Thrash on their sleeves, this legendary band can still produce an album that is this intense. All 10 songs are insanely hardened Thrash jewels. "Devils In The Mist", "What It Takes" and "Skull And Bones" kick off this album with unrestrained, mammoth Thrash that lets it be known what Over Kill is all about. "Skull And Bones" has guest vocalist Randy Blythe from Lamb Of God, his vocals are a true compliment to this song. The one-two punch of having both Bobby Blitz and Randy Blythe on the same song, is a Thrash gift from Over Kill. "Hellish Pride" is a trademark Over Kill cut, Bobby Blitz hits the high note here. Musically, I never can say enough about the talent of Over Kill, Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth is always the masterful Thrash vocalist, D.D. Verni plays the best bass in Metal. The duo of Dave Linsk (lead & rhythm guitar) and Derek Tailer (rhythm guitar) are obviously formidable. Ron Lipnicki brings a great, fresh, Thrash blast attack on drums. If you are looking for the real deal in Thrash Metal, look no more, Over Kill is it. I always and forever will recommend "Immortalis" to all Metal fans worldwide!
The liner notes are 16 pages of complete lyrics, credits and thank you's. Each band member has a full page photo as well. This is the way liner notes should be done.
What's great about it: Over Kill, Randy Blythe guest vocals, Heavy, Heavy Thrash!!

This "Extended Versions" of Live Megadeth is a terrific value. You are getting 10 choice cuts from the Megadeth catalog of Thrash Metal greatness. "Symphony Of Destruction", "Wake Up Dead", and "Angry Again" are my top 3 favorites here, they are relentless, grinding and bludgeoning Thrash. These Megadeth songs sound just as good if not better live, compared to the studio tracks. The overall quality is fine, there is no unnecessary noise or live concert distractions to worry about. Dave Mustaine on vocals and guitar is a Thrash Metal icon! I highly recommend "Extended Versions" of Megadeth live in concert to all Megadeth fans and Metal fans of all genres. Again, this really is a good value.
The Megadeth lineup for this live disc was: Dave Mustaine on vocals, lead, rhythm and acoustic guitars, David Ellefson on bass, Jimmy DeGrasso on drums, Al Pitrelli on lead, rhythm and acoustic guitars. The complete song list as follows: "Dread And The Fugitive Mind", "Wake Up Dead", "In My Darkest Hour", "Angry Again", "Train Of Consequences", "Hangar 18", "Return To Hangar", "Trust", "Symphony Of Destruction" and "Peace Sells". There are no liner notes with this disc, only a few credits and song list.
What's great about it: Dave Mustaine & his vocals & guitar, all live, great song selection!

Loverboy still has the Rock & Roll energy and enthusiasm in them! Cool Rocking songs and memorable ballads done right are pouring out of Loverboy like it is the '80's! I always bought Loverboy and appreciated their blend of Rock, Hard Rock and easy listening tracks. I bought this album without hearing a single song, I have no regrets. "Just Getting Started" starts this album off on a high note, a fast paced Rock song that sounds so reminiscent of the 1980's Loverboy. "Fade To Black" is a ballad that works well due to the songs structure and Mike Reno's ability to vocalize with true Rock swagger. "One Of Them Days" and "Back For More" are two more high octane tunes that legitimizes this comeback by Loverboy. "I Would Die For You" is a ballad that is as edgy as it is emotional, Mike Reno again sounds like he stepped back into 1985. "As Good As It Gets" is my favorite track, it Rocks with a more current, pumped up sound, plus the lyrics are positive. "Stranded" is another track that shows off a current Loverboy sound, it is a fast paced ballad that ends this album on a high note. I am hoping Loverboy will release new material again soon. Overall, the musicianship is quality with no filler songs to be found. I really enjoy this album, it is an accomplishment for Loverboy to have this good of a comeback. Fans of Loverboy must buy "Just Getting Started", new fans should dig deep into the Loverboy catalog of albums as well.
Phil Colin of Def Leppard lends background vocals on "Stranded". Loverboy is: Mike Reno with vocals, Paul Dean on guitar & vocals, Matt Frenette on drums, Doug Johnson on keyboards and Ken (Spider) Sinnaeve on bass. The complete song list as follows: "Just Getting Started", "Fade To Black", "One Of Them Days", "Back For More", "Lost With You", "I Would Die For You", "Real Thing", "The One That Got Away", "As Good As It Gets", "Stranded". The liner notes are not too shabby, with lyrics for only one song, "Just Getting Started". Plenty of thank you's & credits are in the liner notes.
What's great about it: Terrific songs, very catchy & melodic, Loverboy hasn't lost a beat!

I always strive to listen to all kinds of music, regardless of genre. Missing Persons does take me back to the '80's and some easy going times. New Wave had its underlying Punk influence to a degree. Missing Persons always intrigued me for they bestowed legitimate musicians, make no mistake about it. I like the hits, especially "Words", "Walking In L.A.", and "Destination Unknown". The bass, keyboards and drums on these songs are a standout. I recommend Missing Persons to any fan of New Wave, especially fans who want to listen to something totally different from what is being played today. Any fan of decent drumming and keyboards will appreciate the musicianship here, this is what always attracted me to Missing Persons in the first place.
There are no liner notes with this CD.
What's great about it: Well, It serves to diversify my music collection. Legitimate musicians here.
What's not so great: A few filler songs added to this disc.

In my opinion, the Grunge music movement has it's place and will continue to be a musical force. Grunge is a style and after you break it down, you get good old fashioned Hard Rock with "new" edginess in the mix. Step in, Stone Temple Pilots, with their jazz infused, Rock genius duo of Robert & Dean DeLeo. There are a few Grunge bands that are in their own elite status from this genre, Stone Temple Pilots are one of them. Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS. What you will purchase with "Thank You" is a greatest hits collection that spans the career of a band that walks the fine line of Experimental Rock and near perfection. I could listen to the DeLeo brothers all day, without vocals, playing their songs in any structure they see fit. Scott Weiland is a proven Rock star, his vocals are at times hallucinating, other times they are dark and creepy. Scott Weiland is so good, he can control and change his vocals as the song dictates without losing touch with the music itself. Scott's vocals and the music intertwine to make such a distinct signature sound it can only be revered as true musicianship.
"Wicked Garden" is an example of Stone Temple Pilots heavy side, using Hard Rock riffs and a crunching rhythm section to highlight this. "Plush" is a true example of Grunge at its finest, this is where Scott Weiland's vocals has the creepiness that is necessary with such dark lyrics. "Interstate Love Song" has an almost retrospective atmosphere both musically & lyrically, still the Grunge mood, attitude and sound override, making this song a true spectacle. To sum up this important album, it is a history lesson in Grunge and a music lesson from the DeLeo brothers that is and will always be a mainstay in my music collection. Thank you, Stone Temple Pilots.
The liner notes have plenty of song credits, thank you's, band photos and a very neat, fold out of a panoramic view of a beautiful field of sunflowers.
What's great about it: 13 greatest hits, Robert & Dean DeLeo are superior musicians!

The Answer is an exciting new Hard Rock band that I highly recommend. I bought this CD/DVD due to the value you are getting here and knowing that The Answer is not hype. All 4 songs are excellent, the DVD has great footage of the band which also includes tour footage and interviews. It is a thrill to see these young guys perform and hear their style of Hard Rock. The Answer is obviously influenced by legendary Hard Rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, and Foghat, (to name a few). The Answer is currently opening for AC/DC, that is an accomplishment in itself. I really enjoy hearing the harmonica again in Hard Rock, when done right this undervalued instrument can add a ton of flavor to a song. "Never Too Late" kicks off this EP on the right note, exemplifying the Hard Rock heaviness that The Answer has inside of them. These guys are dandy good musicians, it is quite the listen! I look forward to The Answer releasing a full album in 2009!
There are no lyrics in the liner notes, however the photography, retrospective type face and artwork is a fantastic tribute to how Hard Rock appeared visually decades ago. Kudos to the art direction on this EP.
What's great about it: 4 incredible songs, talented musicians, bonus DVD with extras
