Nazareth "Hair Of The Dog" is Hard Rock gold!
on November 27, 2008
Posted by: Fiend

If you are looking for a great, Classic Hard Rock album to buy, "Hair Of The Dog" should be an easy choice. This album is saturated with Hard Rock. Oozing with bluesy, Hard Rock music and attitude, "Hair Of The Dog" has so much more to offer, with the title track "Hair Of The Dog" being as close of an example to 1970's Heavy Metal as you can possibly hear. This song revs it up into high gear, kicking off this album on a real high note. "Miss Misery" is a melancholy song that thumps along with a denim and leather flavor, highlighting the raspy vocals of Dan McCafferty. "Love Hurts" is the ballad, the big radio hit for Nazareth then and now. This song is a cover from the Everly Brothers, only this version is hardened around the edges and overflows with pure Rock emotion. "Whiskey Drinkin' Woman" is a song with a grooving coolness happening, it has that American Southern Rock sound and atmosphere. "Hair Of The Dog" is in my opinion, quite diversified musically. The opening track being very Metal, another track having Southern Rock flavor and a classic 1950's ballad cover song. "Please Don't Judas Me" is a lengthy rocker at nearly ten minutes long. I appreciate this song for it's jamming, it also exemplifies how albums years ago were geared more to the music than to releasing instant hits. Nazareth released a memorable album back in 1975, it should be enjoyed and passed along for all Rock and Hard Rock fans. Metal fans should embrace this album for its quality musical content and ground floor sound. "Hair Of The Dog" helped shape Heavy Metal in the 1970's and beyond.
Nazareth on "Hair Of The Dog": Dan McCafferty on vocals, Manny Charlton on guitars & synthesizer, Pete Agnew on bass guitar & backing vocals and Darrell Sweet on drums, percussion & backing vocals. The liner notes do not contain lyrics, it is a fold out with an enlarged scale of the album cover artwork.
What's great about it: "Hair Of The Dog" is best, vocals standout, great musicians
What's not so great: No Complaints.

Austrian Death Machine is fun and brutal!
on November 26, 2008

Austrian Death Machine "A Very Brutal Christmas" is very well done. You are getting the Death Metal vocals and music that really thrashes along on all 3 songs. Quite honestly, this is the best cover I have heard of "Jingle Bells" in quite some time. Ahhnold's comments throughout are hilarious fun, this entire concept is genius! Tim Lambesis on guitar, bass and drums is to be congratulated for adding some real deal Death Metal cheer to my Holiday!! I highly recommend this CD single to all Metal fans worldwide. With the quality, music and total fun, this is what I consider a great value.
The liner notes detail the added musicians for "Get to the Choppa" and the Judas Priest cover song. There is additional cool artwork on the inside covers of the digipak and CD itself. A cool photo of Ahhnold and Tim Lambesis is found on the inside cover as well.
What's great about it: Solid entertainment, really fun, Death Metal crunch still rips!
What's not so great: NO Complaints.

"The Very Best Of" Testament is Thrash greatness!!
on November 25, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
"The Very Best Of" Testament is an enormously grand album to buy, especially if you do not own any Testament at all. This album will get you on the right track in building your Testament music collection. There are 15 infamous Thrash tunes to be had here, every song has it's own signature of Thrash greatness. Testament was passed the torch of Thrash and ran with it, creating their very own sound with the guitar expertise of Eric Peterson and Alex Skolnick. The guitar playing will blow you away! The formidable bass of Greg Christian and the blasts of Thrash on drums by Louie Clemente will push the Metal meter to overload. "Practice What You Preach", "Burnt Offerings" and "The Ritual" are three songs worth their weight in Thrash gold. I cannot give lead vocalist Chuck Billy enough praise, he is the most courageous flag bearer of Thrash Metal today. Chuck Billy can belt out Thrash, Death and old school Metal vocals like a true champion of all three genres. I encourage all Metal fans to buy this album. New fans of Testament simply have to know these songs and enjoy them! Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson are so skilled at their craft, with Chuck Billy leading the way, Testament is guaranteed to satisfy any Thrash hunger you have! I am grateful that Testament still plays these songs as strong and loud today as they did years ago. Keep it Thrashing Testament and thank you Chuck Billy for staying so strong.
The liner notes are Thrashtastic, with 16 pages of Testament history, song & album credits and many incredible band photos. The liner notes history details the Testament lineup changes, with timelines. Excellent added stuff to catch you up on Testament & their legacy!
What's great about it: Chuck Billy on vocals, great guitarists, pure 100% Thrash!
What's not so great: Absolutely no complaints.

Def Leppard "Euphoria" Rocks! A Def Leppard winner
on November 25, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
In 1999, Def Leppard released "Euphoria". This album is old school Def Leppard from the lyrics to the music itself. You can feel and hear the excitement in Def Leppard's playing, especially on "Back In Your Face", a Hard Rockin' track that is loaded with swagger and attitude. "Promises" is the most popular "hit" on "Euphoria", with its catchy background vocals and non stop melodic flow. The guitar playing on "Promises" has extremely addicting leads and hooks that coincide perfect with Joe Elliott's vocals. "Demolition Man" is a heavy hitter, a giant of a song to open up "Euphoria", essentially stating that Def Leppard has their Heavy Metal roots. "Paper Sun" is my favorite track. It is taken from the old school mold of Heavy Metal chorus, with a deliberately slow tempo that still exudes a powerful song. Def Leppard sounds so great on this album, the hard & heavy ambiance is all over "Euphoria". Every song on "Euphoria" is worth a thousand listens, this album has proven to the world Def Leppard had returned with a vengeance. Def Leppard has not looked back since "Euphoria", the Hard Rock & Metal is still in them!
Def Leppard is: Joe Elliott on lead vocals, Rick Allen on drums, Phil Collen on guitar & vocals, Vivian Campbell on guitar & vocals and Rick Savage on bass guitar & vocals. The liner notes are unique, with a 12 page fold out that has each respective band member's photo, plus 2 large band photos, song credits, more credits and thank you's. There are no lyrics in the liner notes.
What's great about it: Every song, lyrics, "Paper Sun" is really good,
What's not so great: NO Complaints.

DIO "Metal Hits" is required Metal listening!
on November 25, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
I purchased DIO "Metal Hits" without a sliver of hesitation. Adding this CD to my Heavy Metal collection is adding a legend. All 10 songs are a Metal platform for the powerful vocals of Ronnie James Dio, these songs exemplify what Heavy Metal is. Electrifying guitar work from Vivian Campbell (currently with Def Leppard), on "Holy Diver" and "Rainbow In The Dark", as well as the atmospheric keyboard brilliance you hear throughout these songs. Vinnie Appice on drums is always a treat to listen to, his skills are shown on "Sunset Superman" and "Hollywood Black". DIO has written the most entertaining lyrics with his music, while having several sensational musicians over the years to create such ground shaking Metal. This "Metal Hits" of DIO deserves a place in every Metal fans music collection.
What's great about it: Ronnie James Dio on vocals, all the songs and musicians!
What's not so great: NO Complaints.

Aggressive & darkest W.A.S.P. album ever. Really.
on November 24, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
"K.F.D." is by far, the darkest, creepiest, most aggressive W.A.S.P. album ever created by Blackie Lawless. Lyrically, it will shake and stir, musically it has all the ingredients to acknowledge it is the most risky and heaviest W.A.S.P. release ever. I am a long time W.A.S.P. fan, adding K.F.D. to my collection was pertinent, I appreciate this diverse direction Blackie Lawless took here. Many Metal bands get too wrapped up in the status quo, stay stagnant and/or repetitious for too long. W.A.S.P. is unique here, straying away from the old school Heavy Metal to create this hardened melancholy album. Death Metal qualities abound with K.F.D., with especially the lyrics. Overall the statement here is very strong. W.A.S.P. and Death Metal fans will find this a worthy listen, Metal fans in general may appreciate the diverse approach Blackie Lawless took here.
The W.A.S.P. lineup for K.F.D. is: Blackie Lawless on lead vocals & guitar, Chris Holmes on lead guitar, Stet Howland on drums & vocals and Mike Duda on bass & vocals.
What's great about it: Blackie Lawless and Chris Holmes, most unique W.A.S.P. ever
What's not so great: No Complaints.

Exodus first! This is a monster of a Thrash album!
on November 24, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Exodus "Bonded By Blood" is a remarkable Thrash album. The speed and forceful energy of all things Thrash is totally implemented here. This being the first album by Exodus, it is the beginning of a long lasting Thrash legacy that is still being carried out to this day, courtesy of original guitarist Gary Holt. The late Paul Baloff on vocals is the real deal on this album, I liken his vocals to that of Rob Halford of Judas Priest, only you have to add Thrash intensity with tried and true blue collar attitude. "Bonded By Blood" and "A Lesson In Violence" are my two favorites, the sheer relentless bass and drums delivered by Exodus with eye popping guitar playing are what you will hear. "Bonded By Blood" is an exercise in the founding roots of what Thrash Metal is supposed to sound and feel like. Exodus created an album that is addicting with both music and attitude. There are no pretentious linings or overtones to found here on this album. Exodus both then and now is real Thrash with no frills or fillers. Exodus was and still is a Thrash originator, "Bonded By Blood" paved the way for countless Metal bands to follow as a template, it is that good. I recommend "Bonded By Blood" and all Exodus music, to all veteran and new fans of Metal.
There are two bonus tracks on this version of "Bonded By Blood", they are "And Then There Were None" and "A Lesson In Violence". Both songs were performed live at The Astoria, London, England on March 8, 1989. The vocals on both of these bonus tracks are that of the great Steve Souza. The liner notes on this CD are limited to 2 pages of song & recording credits.
What's great about it: Late Paul Baloff on vocals, Gary Holt blazes on guitar! Legendary Thrash!
What's not so great: NO Complaints.

Janis Joplin will never be forgotten by me!!
on November 23, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
I was missing a key music legend in my collection, a historic and monumental Hard Rock figure who single handedly changed the world of Rock & Roll for the better. This legend is Janis Joplin. Buying Janis Joplin "Super Hits" wasn't just a great value and welcomed addition to my music collection, it was the right thing to do. I can now celebrate Janis Joplin's bluesy, soulful, and beautiful sandpapered voice anytime I want. I have always and forever will respect and admire Janis Joplin and her music. The doors she left opened for todays female Rock stars is an immeasurable contribution, this is how she changed the world of Rock & Roll forever. My favorite track here is "Me And Bobby McGee", the rhythmic atmosphere of the song, it's lyrics, arrangement and the added softness to Janis's vocals wins me over every listen. "Piece Of My Heart" and "I Need A Man To Love" are overwhelmingly wonderful songs that I adore from Janis. Please do not hesitate if you are looking to buy "Super Hits" Janis Joplin, it is an ideal musical addition to any music collection. I could not possibly endorse any harder the purchase of Janis Joplin, I hope you will enjoy her music as much as I do.
The complete song list on "Super Hits" Janis Joplin as follows: "Piece Of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Me And Bobby McGee", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "One Good Man", "Move Over", "I Need A Man To Love", "Turtle Blues", "A Woman Left Lonely", "One Night Stand".
What's great about it: Janis Joplin - her voice, energy, love for the music she gave life to.
What's not so great: Absolutely never a complaint with Janis Joplin.

"Love Alive" is a great mix of Heart hits!
on November 23, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
I have always held a place in my heart for Heart! Ann and Nancy Wilson can write and play some true Classic Rock & Hard Rock songs that never seem to go out of style. I bought this CD due to the incredible value and greatest hits selection combined. You are getting terrific late '70's hits like "Barracuda", "Love Alive", and "Say Hello" along with early 1980's hits "Bebe Le Strange", "Even It Up" and "Bright Light Girl". My favorite track here is the often overlooked steady driven rocker "Sleep Alone". From the 1983 "Passion Works" album, this song is heavy on the drums and Heart rocks it! If you are looking to fill that niche in your music collection that needs a little Heart, then this is a pretty good greatest hits to add.
There are no liner notes with this CD, only the song selection & credits are listed.
What's great about it: Nancy & Ann Wilson, the songs & lyrics, great songs selected
What's not so great: No complaints.

"The Best of Queensryche" is an essential listen!
on November 23, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
If you are embarking on collecting Queensryche, this should be your first stop. "The Best of Queensryche Sign of the Times" is a breathtaking musical tour, of one of the most celebrated careers a Metal band could ever dream of having. Queensryche is one of the best Progressive Metal bands to ever play. They have hit #1 on the charts with "Silent Lucidity" and have had obscure hit favorites such as "Real World" from "The Last Action Hero" movie soundtrack. Queensryche has, with proven integrity, captivated their fans from the most mellow of ballads with "Silent Lucidity" to their first Power Metal release "Queen of the Reich". Queensryche with their early Power Metal fury, coupled with the transition to becoming a front line Progressive Metal band indicates just how important they are to the history of Heavy Metal. Musically, each band member is so extremely talented. Geoff Tate will prove to you he can sing any note, any mood, with polished skill. Every important hit is here, this album will have you looking for all of Queensryche's releases. I heavily recommend this album to all Rock fans and especially Metal fans who want to hear the finest of Progressive Metal in all of it's powerful complexity!
Queensryche is: Geoff Tate on vocals & keyboards, Chris DeGarmo on electric & acoustic guitars, Michael Wilton on electric & acoustic guitars, Eddie Jackson on bass and Scott Rockenfield on drums & percussion. Kelly Gray plays guitar on "Until There Was You" and Mike Stone plays guitar on "All The Promises". The liner notes are what you are looking for, with complete song credits, equipment list, more credits, list of band members and 3 pages of Queensryche history. Six pages of artwork are also in the liner notes. No lyrics are in the liner notes.
What's great about it: 17 great songs, spans entire career, leaders of Progressive Metal
What's not so great: NO Complaints.
