Great White does it all on Recover!
on October 9, 2008

Great White "Recover" has a little bit of everything here, the good news is it's all blue collar Metal! As the liner notes state, this material was recorded in November of 1989. Great White's material over the years still sounds current and they are still the best Led Zeppelin cover band around! Speaking of, Great White covers 6 Zeppelin songs here, truthfully Great White pulls it off with Zeppelin covers everytime. The lineup for Great White at the time of this recording as follows: Jack Russell (lead vocals), Mark Kendall (guitar), Michael Lardie (guitar/keyboards/vocals), Tony Montana (bass) and Audie Desbrow (drums). More cover songs can be found here, from "Saturday Night Special" (Lynyrd Skynyrd) to "Any Way You Want It" (Journey). Great White covers "Love Removal Machine" by The Cult here and it is a dandy. Dweezil Zappa appears on the cover "Unchained" by Van Halen, a respectable guitar guest to have if I might add. "Once Bitten Twice Shy" "Rock Me" and "Save Your Love", all three original past hits are included as well, remind me of what Great White has accomplished with getting Metal on the airwaves back in the '80's. Overall you will find that Jack Russell always sings from the soul, with a touch of bluesy blue collar attitude. This is a fun crop of songs chosen here to cover on this disc, it shows the reverence Great White bestows on so many Classic Rock and Metal bands and the influence these bands have had on Great White. It is obvious Led Zeppelin had a tremendous influence on Great White here, I feel that Great White should be of some influence on younger bands today.
What's great about it: A 2 disc set, cool Zeppelin cover songs, more covers and a few past hits
What's not so great: released in 2007, maybe a brand new original track or two could have been added?

WOW! Cheap Trick IS BACK!
on October 9, 2008

It is a tremendous thrill to be able to purchase a relatively new Cheap Trick disc, (2006), knowing these guys are still around and making their brand of Rock N' Roll is uplifting. The entire disc, all 12 songs are filled with energy and enthusiasm you would expect from a band of 20 year olds! These songs and their lyrics are so relevant to today, it is downright refreshing to listen to "Rockford". "Welcome to the World" is as hard rocking as Cheap Trick gets, "Come On, Come On, Come On" and "Give It Away" have that sliver of Punk attitude that Cheap Trick sometimes bestowed in their earlier days, "If It Takes a Lifetime" is the closest you get to a rocking ballad. "This Time You Got It" is another harder edged rocker that is full of high energy musically and can easily psyche you out and make you feel great! If Cheap Trick set out to make one of their best albums ever, with some of the catchiest songs they ever wrote/played and clever lyrics they have ever written, they succeeded. Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson, and Bun E. Carlos may please take a bow!
What's great about it: Original lineup still intact, catchy songs & memorable lyrics

There is only one Electric Light Orchestra!
on October 8, 2008

This is an awesome greatest hits package from Electric Light Orchestra. Volume 2 has some well known hits that are still played on Rock radio to this day, like "Do Ya" and "Can't Get It Out of My Head". There are many more of the obscure and deeper album cuts like "It's Over" from the "Out of the Blue" album and "Four Little Diamonds" from the "Secret Messages" album. This is an excellent opportunity to secure an amazing 20 song best of disc from ELO, which has such a vast album catalog. There is only one band ever like ELO, their diverse, progressive and at times futuristic sound has never been replicated. Jeff Lynne, (lead vocalist and guitarist), hand picked these songs for this disc and has comments for each in the liner notes. "The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra Volume 2" is a great start for new ELO fans and a must own for veteran ELO fans.
What's great about it: Greatest hits, 20 songs!

A very melodic dream it is!

After listening to "The Dream" by In This Moment, I needed to listen again and again and I am still listening! Maria Brink's vocals are breathtaking, especially on the ballad "The Promise, Into The Light". She strays away from Death Metal growl to showcase her vocal talent throughout "The Dream". "Violet Skies" and "The Dream" has Maria belting it out with more Metal vocal flare. Maria is backed by a fine band, Chris Howorth and Blake Bunzel on guitars, Jesse Landry on Bass and Jeff Fabb on drums. I have to say that this is material that can easily be played on Rock radio, a Pop Metal flavor is "The Dream" at times, such as "The Underworld, Her Kiss" and "You Alway's Believed". The song writing is clever here, following "The Dream" throughout is a melodious musical journey that both uplifts and levels the spirit. For those of you unfamiliar with In This Moment, you will here a young and talented band maturing musically by leaps and bounds. Having such a diverse sophomore release is accommodating to many Hard Rock and Metal audiences, In This Moment has etched out a pretty nice niche here for themselves.
What's great about it: Melodious Hard Rock/Metal, Maria Brink on vocals is mesmerizing!

Influence is incredible, period.

After just one listen through with "Influence" and you hear and feel the unique musical chemistry that both Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades have together. The overall up beat vibe throughout "Influence" will have you not putting this disc away for a very long time. What an accomplished set of Classic Rock gems that Shaw-Blades covers! I used to never care for "The Sound Of Silence", now I cannot wait to listen to the Shaw-Blades version. These guys have taken "Summer Breeze" to another level, making it seem that much more alive and rocking. Tommy Shaw sings lights out on "California Dreamin", leaving the void of not having a female vocal anywhere in this tremendous song seem totally appropriate. "Time Of The Season" gives me the chills no matter how many times I listen to it, the vocal harmonies and overall musical arrangement and tempered up-tempo of this Shaw-Blades version hits home. "Lucky Man" is an abbreviated version of the original, Shaw-Blades treat this masterful song with the upmost respect. "I Am A Rock" is covered here with a tad more energy than the original, making it sound even more inspirational the second this song begins. I obviously have fallen head over heels for "Influence", this is one disc that will lift your spirits in a good old fashioned Classic Rock way. All fans of Tommy Shaw and Styx, Jack Blades and Night Ranger have to positively, absolutely add "Influence" to their music collection. Shaw-Blades have proven to me that they are a class act and stand alone musically. If their musical talents on "Influence" do not blow you away, their vocals surely will.
What's great about it: Tommy Shaw, Jack Blades, both on vocals, covering true Rock classics!

Full throttle Hair Metal at it's best!
on October 3, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
It is obvious that Hair Metal is an accepted genre of the Metal music world. Here is Faster Pussycat and their Greatest Hits disc, this certainly solidifies their rightful existence in the Metal universe. You are getting 10 of their tunes that have a great Metal groove, balanced with plenty of melody and trademark late 80's early 90's high energy, maximum octane Hair Metal riffs and hooks. This is a hot disc to own, especially for fans of Warrant, Cinderella, White Lion and Great White. "Bottle in Front of Me" and "House of Pain" are two tracks that make this disc. All Hair Metal and Hard Rock fans should really consider adding Faster Pussycat's Greatest Hits to their collection. If you never heard or owned Faster Pussycat before, this is a credible introduction.
What's great about it: Greatest hits, high energy - feel good Hair Metal

S.O.T.U. rocks out!
on October 1, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
So here we have a fine group of well established Hard Rock/Metal musicians known as S.O.T.U., abbreviated for Saints Of The Underground. Lead singer Jani Lane (Warrant), drummer Bobby Blotzer (Ratt), lead guitarist Keri Kelli (currently with Alice Cooper) and bassist Robbie Crane. Knowing the bands where these guys herald from, you pretty much know what you are going to get here, that is fun, good times hard rocking Metal. The songs do not have the retrospective Hair Metal thumping going on, what you hear is rather relevant to today's Hard Rock/Metal sound. "Dead Man Shoes" is a terrific opening track, it really sets the tone for the entire disc. "American Girl" is a cover of Tom Petty's enormous hit, S.O.T.U. give it an almost garage band type of sound and feel to it, which turns out not too shabby. Jani Lane on vocals does not come across overbearing, he really sounds quite cool and convincing. Musically these guys are seasoned pros and sound as such here. If you are a fan of the 1980's Metal scene your in heaven here. If you are not aware of Warrant, Ratt, or Alice Cooper, need not hesitate to have Saints Of The Underground catch you up to speed on their current cool sound.
What's great about it: Established musicians, cool lyrics, very melodic

Whoa! Over Kill Relix IV is over the top!
on September 28, 2008

Here it is, the one song you will need to sing along to every time you listen to "Relix IV".... "Old School". This song just has to be the official anthem of Over Kill and all of us older, or should I say, veteran Metalheads. Man, is this song cool! It is, believe it or not, Punk driven musically, the vocals and backing vocals are proof of this. "Within Your Eyes", "Bats In The Belfry", "Pound of Flesh" and "Keeper" will definitely satisfy your Thrash appetite. "Keeper" is another great tune to shout along to, trust me. I definitely will say this is the most fun Over Kill album ever, being that "Old School" and "Keeper" exist on it. You still will receive, without question, the unrelenting Thrash, dark lyrics, dark mood throughout "Relix IV". Not one bad tune to be found here. This is once again, another must own for all Over Kill and all Thrash Metal fans worldwide. Thank you Bobby Blitz and D.D. Verni for making "Relix IV".
What's great about it: Searing Thrash, Bobby Blitz and D.D. Verni, great lyrics

Krokus still rocks after all these years!
on September 27, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
Krokus does it again, bringing their brand of Metal to us and I am enjoying every second. Krokus has their own originality, they do a nice blend of heavy and slow beat Metal, sprinkled with a tad of retro style '80's Metal here. "Hangman" and "Midnite Fantasy" will have you thinking it is 1984 all over again, but for us older Metalheads it's that trip down memory Metal lane that keeps us buying up these older Metal bands in the first place! Marc Storace is still belting out the vocals for Krokus, and he sounds great as ever. Marc Storace wrote the words and vocal melodies for every song here, showing how tried and true a Metal veteran talent he is. Mandy Meyer plays lead guitar with old school brilliance, as a band this is quite a cohesive unit. Dominique Favez (rhythm guitar), Tony Castell (bass), and Stefan Schwarzmann (drums) round out the lineup. Yes, it is not the original Krokus lineup anymore, yet how many original Metal lineups are left out there anyway? If you want to enjoy a good rockin' Metal album, buy this and delve deeper into the Krokus catalog and see why this band deserves to still rock with the best of them today.
What's great about it: Good time Metal, catchy tunes, 14 songs to enjoy here.

A spooky Punk Halloween from AFI!
on September 26, 2008
Posted by: Fiend
from Pennsylvania
AFI shows off their Horror Punk side with "All Hallow's E.P.", from 1999. This is a neat early release from the career of AFI that should not go unnoticed. This is a fun E.P. to own, each of the four songs are Halloween related, "Fall Children, Halloween, The Boy Who Destroyed The World, and TotalImmortal." "Halloween" is a cover made famous from the legendary Misfits/Glenn Danzig and AFI does a cool cover at that. Davey Havok sounds great on vocals, with Adam Carson (drums), Jade Puget (guitar) and Hunter (bass) rounding out AFI here. This E.P. makes for a legitimate addition to any AFI, Punk, or any Horror Rock genre collection.
What's great about it: AFI playing Horror Punk
