"'Wargames' is a movie that everyone should see as it deals completely with the moral implications of thermonuclear warfare. Well scripted, and great performances make this one well worth a viewing. As far as bonus features are concerned, there isn't a whole lot, but the audio commentary is quite good."

Wargames was a hit film in 1983 that has become a harbinger of the future, and the MGM DVD, like the movie, contains several features that make it hard to resist. Wargames is the tale of a computer run amok; the movie stars a prepubescent Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, and Ally Sheedy. Today, with modems prevalent and computers running everything from coffee makers to automobiles, the idea of an intelligent computer using the telephone to create havoc doesn't seem so far-fetched. The DVD features an audio commentary by director John Badham and writers Lawrence Lasker and Walter F. Parkes that frequently makes the same point: what was science fiction then has become commonplace today. The DVD has a new Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack that amplifies the creepy booming undertones that the filmmakers use to indicate the computer is working independently. Trivia, production notes, and the original theatrical trailer complete the special features.

moveis are brought back but the first one is unfortunatly edited, I could tell by the lips not matching the "bad" words, but thats the only one. The story is as follows Giant worms from dino time have come up and start hunting and think anything that makes sound is food, this is bad for anything that moves. They are named Graboids and soon after the one who named them is killed. The next movie follows the first but insted of worms this time thier Shreekers their like the worms but now they have legs and a heat flap on the top of its head that lets it see heat. With these they think anything with heat is food, this is bad for anything warm blooded. In the third movie they are back after many years and bring a new trick to the game they can now fly, Butt(clean version) blasters as they are called are the same as Shreekers but they shoot them selfs into the air from a "explosive gas" and hunt like the Shreekers (anything with heat=food). The final Move is just how people who knew about the creatures faught them in their lillte town of Rejection (no joke thats the name of the town back then).
The dvds' extras are various with each dvd the best ones are with the 4th one that tells of how they have done over the years and how they did everything. Its a good buy with good extras that would make any monster fan proud."

A high-flying, time travel adventure that gets an "A" for originality, The Final Countdown arrives on DVD in fine form with this feature-packed Blue Underground release. The feature attraction is presented letterboxed at 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, and the care that Blue Underground has put into restoring the print will certainly score points with fans. The image is virtually pristine, with solid, well-balanced colors that are bright and vivid, and even skin tones throughout. Audio is presented in closed-captioned English Dolby Digital Surround EX and 2.0 Surround, with an additional DTS-ES track offering a second option for home theater enthusiasts. All three soundtracks are great, with the Dolby Digital Surround EX and the DTS-ES in particular truly shining in the airborne dogfight sequences. Optional English, Spanish, and French subtitles are also accessible. Blue Underground is certainly an organization dedicated to presenting the definitive version of any film that it chooses to release, and this version of The Final Countdown is no exception to that rule. A commentary track with cinematographer Victor J. Kemper offers some good anecdotes concerning the shoot, and while there isn't an abundance of downtime, it ultimately leaves the viewer wanting something more. Though it's interesting to hear how the film crew adjusted their schedules to cooperate with Naval exercises (the anecdote regarding a still-photographer who was "kidnapped" for a "man overboard" exercise is amusing), it ends up being somewhat dry since Kemper doesn't have anyone to bounce memories off of. Fortunately, an interview with associate producer/Troma president Lloyd Kaufman picks up any slack by offering a recollection that is amusing, insightful, and candid. It's obvious that the experience was a crash course in filmmaking for Kaufman, and it's great to hear his memories -- both fond and otherwise -- of the production. Interviews with "The Jolly Rogers" F-14 fighter squadron offer a view of Hollywood from a Naval perspective, and certainly give one an appreciation for the tight choreography and camaraderie needed to run a successful flight deck. Poster and still galleries offer a wealth of high-quality images related from the film, and a biography for star Kirk Douglas gives a detailed analysis of his life and career from his earliest days to his later days in front of the camera. One only wishes all DVD bios could be so insightful. A "Zero Pilot Journal" rounds things out nicely by offering an article on the shoot from a pilot's perspective.

This direct-to-cable sequel in the Species film series follows the next legacy of the sexually frustrated alien species as the daughter of Eve (Natasha Henstridge) is born into an uncaring human world. Newcomer Sunny Mabrey plays Sara, the first genetically perfect specimen of her species, who is kidnapped upon birth by a professor who has his own selfish reasoning to keep her alive. Hounded by the army and other human-alien DNA hybrids bent on breeding, the hunt is on for the professor and Sara to create another perfect offspring any way they can. Premiering on the Sci-Fi channel in November of 2004, the erotic sci-fi thriller came to DVD a month later in a director's cut supervised by the director, Brad Turner, a TV veteran whose show credits include Andromeda, Stargate SG-1, and the '90s revamp of Outer Limits.

"The best thing about this set is the price. The re-mastered high-def transfers on these new versions seem a bit too light to me, and also seem to be missing some of the extras from the original collector's dvd release. Still though, a good buy for two great films. Recommended."

The "Complete Trilogy" is right. All three movies are here, and that would be a pretty full meal in itself, but along with the 339 minutes of movie on three discs -- all transferred about as well as anyone ever imagined they could be for the home screen, with bright, solid colors and resolution that reveals picture details that might have previously escaped viewers, plus ear-popping sound -- we also get ten hours of extra features. Each disc leads off its bonus section with a 14-minute making-of featurette, done at the time of each respective movie's release, about the evolution of ideas for the plots, the design of the sets and props, the way in which the score was conceived, and the makeup, casting, etc. None is revelatory, but it also would have been silly not to have included each in this package. Much more interesting is "The Making of the Trilogy," three new 15-minute featurettes in which the creators explain themselves better in all of the areas covered by the older featurettes, especially where the special effects and makeup are concerned, though each also reveals some superficiality in the thinking of the producers, such as Bob Gale's statement that no Hollywood movie had ever been built on the notion that every adult was once a kid (there's a movie called It's a Wonderful Life that spends a good bit of time on that very subject). Not that this matters -- the makers came up with two eminently enjoyable and one genuinely funny, touching movie, and it's fascinating to see how they did it, to learn that the movie was nearly sunk by its PG-rated orientation (with R-rated comedies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High making a fortune, every studio thought Back to the Future was too "soft," except for Disney, where they felt the script was too "dirty" because of the implication of defacto incestuous attraction between two of the characters), and to see how Michael J. Fox managed to get the lead role after shooting had already commenced with Eric Stoltz in the part. And then there are the sets of commentary tracks on each disc, one a live question-and-answer session by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale before an audience of film students; another an "enhanced" interview with Michael J. Fox (who appears in a window in the upper right-hand corner of the screen) discussing the movie and his role in it; and a commentary track by Gale and Neil Canton, which is deliberately keyed to carry the viewer past the boundaries of the other two commentaries. Disc two contains a similar range of material, but without Fox's enhanced reminiscences; instead, we get a selection of some substantial outtakes from the movie, with the optional accompaniment of Bob Gale's commentary explaining why they were deleted, and an array of outtakes, including flubbed lines and cues. Disc three, in addition to two commentaries, contains one violent scene that was cut out of the third movie, with Gale's explanation of why. The commentary is a little bit thin by this time, as though the participants lost some of their own continuity, even engaging in some strained and limp humor that doesn't quite work. They do admit to an error in the script during the first ten minutes of the movie, but otherwise the remarks here are less focused, and seem to suffer from some of the same weariness that overtook the makers in shooting the third movie. Each disc is dual-layered and offers a seamless, invisible transition, even on older players. Each one opens to a three-tiered menu that is very easy to use, with bonus features that advance automatically on the selection list as they play out. There are also production stills, storyboards, conceptual art, and promotional and marketing materials presented in an interactive format, and each disc offers a DVD-ROM function (for those playing these discs on their computers) that includes the original script for each movie. These extras all may be a little bit more than the trilogy deserves in the total scheme of cinema -- none of the Back to the Future movies is remotely as significant as, say, The Birth of a Nation, Citizen Kane, etc. -- but it is all interesting to take in, one movie at a time, one day at a time, and enlightening about how important luck is, along with talent and bold intentions, in making a successful film (or two or three).
