The second volume of the updated, remastered Star Trek original series is part of what is already a mis-matched set. The first season, released while HD-DVD was still being marketed, was issued as a set of HD-DVD/DVD hybrid discs, the two formats represented on opposite sides of each platter. HD-DVD disappeared in the interim, apparently just before the manufacturing phase of this set was reached, but after it had been designed - thus, the platters here are designed as double-sided discs, and look like double-sided discs, but without the HD encoded side, so they are single-sided platters (you'd think someone at Paramount would have thought to simply put the original versions of the episodes on the empty sides... ) The episodes themselves, as one would expect, look sensational. Some shots look downright 3-D, even on an ordinary monitor. The full-screen image (1.33-ro-1) is so crisp and bright that it is like seeing many of them for the first time, even for this reviewer, who saw these all on their original network broadcasts (and many times since), and not even because of the new digital effects. Yes, the CGI-generated images of the Enterprise in space, or the more realistic planet-scapes, as well as the larger-than-life apparitions (such as in "The Doomsday Machine" and "Obsession" go a long way to making those episodes work better than ever; but when the image is sharp enough to reveal skin textures in medium shots, and color comes through as it was originally seen on the set and meant to be lit, one finds it makes world of difference in terms of what we're seeing, and in achieving that willing-suspension-of-disbelief that is essential to most science fiction. And the producers of these CGI-enhanced editions deserve credit -- on this particular season of the series, which includes an episode ("The Immunity Syndrome") that won an award for its visual effects, they had to walk a finer line between enhancing the original episodes and obliterating some of their original appeal, than was required for the first season or the third season of the series. Otherwise, one has to say that the programming, apart from some clever menu graphics on each platter, is remarkably close to the 2004-vintage set containing the original, non-CGI-enhanced versions of these episodes. The chaptering is the same, and almost all of the special features from that earlier set, except for the text commentary tracks, has been included here. This includes "Billy Blackburn's Home Movies," comprised of behind-the-scenes home movies by the production crew member, made during the production of the series; and the "Star Trek: The Animated Series episode "More Trouble, More Tribbles", which uses this season's "The Trouble With Tribbles" episode as its jumping-off point, with author }David Gerrold's commentary track; and the "Trials and Tribble-ations" episode from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", which, similarly, used the episode from this season of the original series as the focus of its action. The producers have also thrown in the Deep Space Nine DVD set bonus featurettes "Uniting Two Legends" and "An Historic Endeavor," which delve into the creation of that episode. We also get previews for the episodes. The menu is the same design as the previous set. As on the Season One set in this same DVD series, in lieu of a booklet the labeling and annotation appears on individual plastic cards. And that brings us to the matter of the packaging -- as with the 2003-2004 Star Trek repackagings, someone in the production and art departments in Paramount's video division is too clever by half, for either their own good or the good of the consumer; this is the second round of Star Trek reissues that are packaged in a format that is so awkward and unwieldy as to drive away potential purchasers, and someone in an executive position should pull the plug on such notions -- this reviewer's copy of this set plays fine, but there are little pieces of plastic in the idiotic packaging of this set that are broken off, and were broken off in transit before opening, and it's all totally unnecessary, as should be the requirement for an extra set of hands to maneuver this set to simply pull out or replace a disc.

The voyage of the Starship Enterprise continues with the release of Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season 2 on DVD. This six-disc box set contains all 22 episodes of the series' second season. Each of these episodes are presented in their original aspect ratio of 1.33:1 full-frame and look very good. Since these episodes were broadcast in 1980s, the transfers tend to appear washed out with dirt and grain penetrating the image. However, the bulk of these pictures appear to be in decent shape with solid colors and dark black levels. The soundtracks are presented in both Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo and a newly created Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround mix, both in English. The Dolby 5.1 mixes are extremely crisp and clear with directional sounds situated mainly in the front and center speaker. While a few surround sounds escape to the back speakers, overall these are limited mixes that support the episodes well. Also included on the discs are English subtitles. On par with the first season, Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season 2 includes a few well-produced extra features, starting with "Mission Overview: Season Two" which features interviews with the cast and crew and an overview of what was new to the second season of the series. "Selected Crew Analysis" focuses more on the cast and characters, including the arrival of Whoopi Goldberg's otherworldly character. "Departmental Briefings: Production" and "Memorable Missions" will please fans looking for an insiders view of the show. Included on these two features are all-new interviews with Rick Berman, Peter Lauritson, production designer Alan Sims, visual effects artist Dan Curry, and other cast and crew members. Each of these featurettes are a good way to see how the Borg, Worf, and other characters came to be. Finally there is "Inside Starfleet Archives," a virtual tour by coordinator Penny Judy showing fans around decades worth of props and costumes. The package is bound in a nice silver box with a collectable booklet for fans to peruse through.

John Carpenter's underrated horror gem Prince of Darkness comes to DVD once again from the folks at Universal, though sadly, it isn't quite the edition fans have been waiting for here in the States. This release boasts the same audio and visual technical specs as the previous disc -- with the 2.35:1 widescreen image perfectly showing off Carpenter's stylistic eye and lone Dolby surround track, which begs to be remastered in this 5.1 day and age. A new inclusion on this disc is the stunning original theatrical trailer, which perfectly fits the film's frightening tone and nightmarish images, though one has to wonder where the commentary track, which graced the Region 2 disc, has gone? Recorded with Carpenter and longtime collaborator Peter Jason, the track is a gold mine for any fan of the director's and one that Region 1 audiences shouldn't have to order through various U.K. distributors just to hear.

Fans can finally boldly go where no man has gone before with the release of Star Trek: The Next Generation -- Season One on DVD. The episodes available on these discs include "Encounter at Farpoint," "Angel One," "The Arsenal of Freedom," "The Battle," "The Big Goodbye," and more. This seven-disc box set features video transfers in 1.33:1 full frame (the original aspect ratio of the TV show). Each of these 26 episodes look better than expected with solid color patterns and dark black levels. While some grain and softness appears from time to time, overall these episodes appear very clean and pleasing to the eye. The audio is featured in Dolby Digital 2.0 along with a newly created Dolby 5.1 remix, both presented in English. The new 5.1 remix should thrill fans of the show with a multitude of new directional effects and a richer, deeper sound than the 2.0 mix. There are moments on both soundtracks where a small amount of hiss is heard (as well as distortion in the dialogue), but for their age and budget, these soundtracks are both in excellent condition. Also included on each episode are subtitles in English. Star Trek: The Next Generation -- Season One features four solid extra features: a documentary on the origins of the show titled "The Beginning"; "Selected Crew Analysis" with the cast's thoughts and recollections on the production and their characters; a "Making of a Legend" documentary, which features more interviews with the cast, crew, and makers of the series; and "Memorable Missions," which is a funny and often intriguing selection of interviews with the cast discussing their favorite moments on the series. Also included in this box set is a companion booklet with information and dates on the selected episodes from the TV show's first season.

The future begins with director J.J. Abrams' reimagining of Star Trek that has taken audiences by storm. When the Romulan Nero comes from the future to take revenge on the Federation, the new recruits of the U.S.S. Enterprise will voyage through unimaginable danger to stop him from destroying everything they know. This is not your father's Star Trek!

Just keeps getting worse and worse
By soothsayer from houston,tx
It seems that korn just seems to get worse and worse every album.
Don't get me wrong I love their first two albums, but after that I feel it all kind of went to S**t. I mean the 3rd was tollerable. But the forth was just awful. The untouchables wasn't far from that either. Now I must say I did kind of like take a look in the mirror, speaking as a metal head. But then they made untitled and that just was awful, just awful.
And now this album is just "pethedic" and "Stupid". They really need to go back to doing heavy stuff, cause really, in my opinion, it doesn't sound good with anyone. I think that this is just a series of albums that are gonna keep getting worse and worse, until they realize they need to stick to heavyness.

One of the worser Megadeth Albums
By soothsayer from houston,tx
The album is ok, but it is nothing I would really rave about. It is, in my opinion, probeblly the "dryist" Megadeth album. There wasn''t really anything magical about it. But it's not awful, it's just not magical at all, magical meaning: the solos are bland, the music itself is bland.
I don't think I would recomend this album to a friend. If you have to choose between this and another megadeth album, I strongly suggest you choose the other one, cause this album is by far the worst album, as far as the music goes.

A New Sound
By LinkinPark2 from MA
This album is a break from the Coldplay normal, but not all breaks are bad. I like this album for its innovation in sound and creativity. No two tracks are the same either. In terms of price though, this album is one of those "almost-rip-offs" because it only has 10 tracks on it.

This sounds like a cross between R.I.P. and S.F.S.G.S.W. only a little better. The only thing thats lacking is the drums. They are very good but lack the style and creativity that only Menza had. This has to be one of the best CD's of 2009.

I also listened to the whole album on Kid's facebook and it is awesome! He went a total different route with this album leaving his twisted brown trucker band behind. It's a little country and rock but the cd takes on a total different feel from his previous work. So go out and support this album you won't be dissapointed!
