Surprisingly comfortable mouse
on May 11, 2022

This is a very comfortable mouse. It takes a little getting used to the different hand position (I kept accidentally squeezing the entire mouse every time I went to left-click - resulting in me hitting the back button by accident). Once I got used to it though, I really came to appreciate the different orientation.
It really is a lot more comfortable to use than a regular mouse.
The mouse connects via either Bluetooth or a dongle. If connecting via Bluetooth, you can switch between up to three devices with a single button press. I have this paired with both my Windows tablet and my Android TV.
(For anyone looking for the dongle, it's stashed inside of the mouse itself).
The mouse tracks beautifully on a mouse pad, but (like most laser mice) it struggled on my glass desktop.
Given its orientation, it should be noted that this mouse does take up more room than a regular mouse. This detracts from its portability some.
I really like this mouse a lot, and I'd strongly recommend it for anyone who has been experiencing any kind of wrist pain.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great little headphones
on May 7, 2022

How Often Used:3-5 times a week
These are great little headphones. They're small, lightweight, comfortable in the ear, and extremely portable.
I had one little issue when I first got these. They were shipped with little plastic stickers over the charging contacts. I plugged these in to charge overnight, but the plastic stickers prevented them from charging.
The sound quality isn't perfect. I found that these earbuds had a little too much bass, and the sound was somewhat "muddy" compared to other earbuds that I've used. These aren't marketed as studio headphones though, and the sound was certainly adequate for listening to music and watching videos.
The earbuds paired with my windows laptop without any issues whatsoever. I was pleasantly surprised that the controls (play, pause, and skip track) all worked fine on Windows as well as Android.
The case doesn't hold a charge, so you'll need to plug these (and the case) in to recharge them when they run out of juice. The charger that they came with is rather curious. It's a short USB type A to micro USB connector. The USB type A end has exposed contacts, so it can be plugged in either direction. I found it a little strange that they didn't use USB type C for the opposite side.
I'm quite pleased with these earbuds and would recommend them for anyone looking for a budget, wireless solution.

Great sound, clear calls
on February 12, 2022
Posted by: TechEnthusiast
from Elgin, IL
I got this primarily for use as a USB hub. My laptop only has two USB-C ports, and I needed at least a couple USB-A ports for hooking up peripherals (portable scanner, computer mouse, etc. . . .).
The speakerphone aspect was more of a "happy bonus" for me. I figured that my built-in mic and speakers were perfectly adequate for conference calls.
I quickly changed my opinion after hearing the speaker in action. This thing has fantastic sound.
The people on the other end of my call even commented on how clear and sharp my audio was.
The "buttons" take a little bit of getting used to. They aren't buttons so much as raised, capacitive icons. They don't "click" like you'd expect, and accidental presses happen very easily.
The speaker comes with a little carrying bag to keep it clean. I think this was a very nice touch.
The cable length is adequate for most use cases. I wouldn't want it to be any shorter, but it wouldn't hurt if it were maybe six inches longer to better sit in the middle of a conference room table. There is a recessed area for storing the cable on the bottom of the speaker.
It only has two USB-A ports. Again, this is adequate for most use cases. Given the lack of ports on my laptop, I wouldn't have minded four (for scanner, mouse, wireless keyboard, and external hard drive). 2 is perfectly adequate for most use cases though.
It has a full-size HDMI port for hooking up an external display (again, great if you're using your laptop as a desktop replacement while traveling).
This device is great if you find yourself frequently traveling for work. It's both compact and loaded with features.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great little device that works quite well.
on January 26, 2022

This is a great little humidifier. Despite its small size, it holds a considerable amount of water. I was also really impressed by how long it lasted on a single tank. Set at about half power, it lasted an entire day and did an admirable job keeping my living room from being too dry.
A couple minor issues I had with it:
First, it needs to be at least 2 feet off the floor for the air intake to work properly. I wasn't expecting this and had to clear an end table to get it elevated high enough.
Second, the piece on the top that directs the stream of moisture is pointed backward. This was sending damp air right at my wall and leaving a wet spot. This piece flips around easily enough (though it won't sit perfectly flush if you flip it), but it's bizarre that they designed it this way in the first place.
These are minor complaints though. The device functions beautifully and is fairly aesthetic to boot.
All in all, I'm very happy with this device.

Cooks well but has some foibles
on January 22, 2022
Posted by: TechEnthusiast
from Elgin, IL
Pros:
Cooked food thoroughly
Cooked food quickly
Large cooking area
Easy to set time and temperature
Easy to switch between functions
Cons:
Sear pan is finicky to get in and out sometimes
Takes forever to cool / unclear if leaving it on keeps the heat on after it's done cooking or not
Door handle position is odd
We used this air fryer to cook a frozen pizza, air fry potato wedges, and bake a crostata prior to this review.
It did a great job of cooking a frozen pizza. Figuring out the cooking time was a little tricky (the instructions note that you need to adjust cooking times figuring that it would cook 30-50% faster than the time provided on the pizza’s instructions. In our experience, it cooked the pizza around 40% faster.
Air frying the potato wedges went very smoothly. The air fry basket is quite large, and the potatoes ended up cooking faster than the time listed on the included chart.
The crostata went “mostly” okay. Getting the sear plate out was a little tricky, and we ended up breaking the crostata up a little getting it into the oven (20/20 hindsight, we should have removed the sear plate completely prior to putting the crostata onto it. Putting it onto the sear plate as the plate was partially out was a bad idea).
My only other complaint about this device is that it’s unclear what is happening once it finishes cooking. Once it’s done cooking, the device beeps and displays the word “Hot.” The oven remains hot for a long time after finishing, and it’s unclear if the heat is still actively turned on or not. I ended up hitting the power button after a bit in an effort to force it to cool off (and the word “Hot” continued to display even after hitting the power button, and the unit remained hot to the touch). I ended up unplugging it to be safe. This was a little weird.

Works well enough, wish it held more water
on December 30, 2021

I like this water flosser well enough, but there are some design choices that could have been improved.
I like that it's wireless and portable, but it's a little big and awkward. You can't really spray from the back of the bottom row of teeth since you can't hold this unit upside down. A longer, flexible hose would have been welcome for this.
While it's big and awkward, it doesn't seem to hold that much water. I found that I had to refill it at least once or twice while trying to get a thorough cleaning.
This is going to sound petty, but it's a really ugly shade of green. It's kind of a drab, olive color. I would have preferred solid black or maybe gray.
Despite these complaints, it appears to work well enough. I was able to clean between my teeth quite well with this.

Excellent router
on December 3, 2021
Posted by: TechEnthusiast
from Elgin, IL
This is an excellent router.
Setup was relatively easy.
You'll need to download an app onto your phone in order to get through the install process. It guides you through the process step by step. The router itself installed almost instantly. The only hitch that I encountered was when I tried adding the satellite units. For some reason, the app claimed that the installation failed when it apparently succeeded. This was a little troubling as there doesn't appear to be any easy way to initiate a manufacturer reset these routers to try the install again.
The connection is good and strong.
The range of the individual units is a little subpar. But used together, they can completely cover a 1000 square foot house with ease.
I'm quite happy with this router.

Good as a clock, adequate as a picture frame
on November 23, 2021
Posted by: TechEnthusiast
from Elgin, IL
I'll confess to having somewhat mixed feelings on this clock.
It's advertised as a clock, and it serves that function well. The Google assistant integration is great, and I was able to turn on and off lights easily with my voice.
As a picture frame, it's not so great.
First, the screen size is smaller than I was expecting. This isn't a deal breaker, but it was disappointing. Second, when trying to select that I wanted to use it as a photo frame in the display settings, I got stuck in a loop. I would click that I wanted it to be a photo frame, it would ask me to select an album, it would ask me to tell it to change the photo frame with my voice, and then it would take me back to the screen to select the photo frame as the background (the 1st step). I went through this loop six times.
I finally created a new album in my photos app and titled it "Alarm Clock." I'm not sure if it was just a coincidence, but it worked after that.
Not the easiest setup.
Again though, this is advertised as a clock, and it serves that function well. The fact that it doesn't live up to my expectations as a photo frame is more a problem with my expectations than anything else.
As a clock and a generic smart speaker, I would recommend this device.

Installation didn't go smoothly - program is "ok"
on November 13, 2021
Posted by: TechEnthusiast
from Elgin, IL
I don't know why, but this application did not want to install properly.
After downloading the software, I went through the installation process. Everything appeared to work fine, and I even got into the program.
The next day, I went to open Photoshop Elements, and it simply would not open. The program had also vanished from my start menu and didn't show up in add/remove programs.
I manually deleted the newly created folder from my programs folder and reinstalled it again.
This second installation appears to be holding, but I'm a little leery since it disappeared that first go around.
The software itself is "okay." I'm surprised that it's running as slowly as it is on an i5 CPU. I've used this same hardware for much more taxing programs, and it hasn't lagged this badly before.
The program itself gets the job done. I mostly use it for cropping and resizing photos. I'll occasionally do some color correction or blemish removal. This program works just fine for all of that.
I do like that they include the quick selection tool. This sets this program apart from most other photo editors which only offer the magic wand or lasso.
I was a little dismayed by its rather limited print options though.
When I saw that it offered a "collage" option, I'd hoped that it would allow me to print a custom sized photo in a grid. Unfortunately, this didn't prove to be the case; and I was limited to the same industry standard size options that Windows offers when printing photos.
This software gets the job done well enough.

A good security camera with some foibles
on November 9, 2021
Posted by: TechEnthusiast
from Elgin, IL
Pros:
Very compact device
Great image quality
Offers both local and cloud storage (for a fee)
Can be pivoted remotely for checking out a large area
Cons:
Motion detection is very hit or miss
Sometimes takes a while to connect (by which time whatever triggered it is long gone)
I got this camera because I'm horribly paranoid that my house is going to explode / flood / fall apart / get broken into / etc. . .. while I'm at work. I thought that it would be comforting to be able to view my home remotely periodically throughout the day to make sure that it's still in one piece.
From that standpoint, this camera works great.
As a security camera, this camera is "meh."
I found that the motion trigger was extremely erratic. I would be moving around in front of the camera doing chores, and it wouldn't register my presence at all. Other times, I would quickly pass by on my way to grab something, and it would immediately react to my presence. It wasn't at all consistent.
Setting up the camera was a little tricky as I didn't want to store video locally OR on the cloud. Unfortunately, this isn't an option within the app. I ended up opting for the free 30 days of cloud storage, and I'll pick up a cheap micro-SD card to store video locally once that expires (assuming that I can't forgo storage completely).
The image quality is really good, and I was particularly impressed by the night vision. Being able to rotate the camera freely means that this can monitor an enormous area.
I'm pretty happy with this camera. It brings me a fair amount of peace of mind and helps keep my paranoia in check.

Can you use with comcast.

Yes. I'm using it with Comcast myself.

You plug the Ethernet cable from your modem to the Orbi router the same as you would any other router. The big difference between the Orbi and other routers is that it comes with a separate satellite unit to extend your wireless range. The satellite unit hooks up to the router wirelessly. Installation and pairing takes about ten - fifteen minutes to complete.

So if it comes with two, I'm assuming you have one that internet is linked to by cable and the other is used as a extender? Or do you have to have both units hooked to cable?

The router portion is connected to your modem via an Ethernet cable, but the satellite / extender unit links up to the router wirelessly. The only wire that you need to have connected to the extender is the power cord.

Nothing puts a vacuum to the test quite like a home with pets. That's why the BISSELL~ Pet Hair Eraser~ was developed from the ground up by pet parents for pet parents. Whether it's shedding season for your dog or your cat tracks kitty litter all over the house, this revolutionary vacuum is designed to make cleaning up after pets and the people who love them a breeze~from beginning to end. Say goodbye to hair wrap with its Tangle-Free Brush Roll, remove embedded hair everywhere with specialized pet tools, help capture allergens and eliminate odors with the SmartSeal~ Allergen System, and when you're finished cleaning, enjoy a hands-free tank empty with our patented Cyclonic Spooling System~.BR>

How load is it? I've used an Oreck XL upright and a Eureka Mighty Mite and would hope it's no louder as those. I prefer bagged vacuums but want to try the BISSELL Pet Hair Eraser because of its claims of not getting hair tangled on the roller.

I haven't tried the two vacuums that you mentioned, but I can say that I was surprised that this vacuum wasn't terribly loud.

Given it's size and the number of vents coming out of it, I expected it to be deafening. Upon turning it on, I was surprised by just how mild the sound was. It'll definitely drown out a television or radio some, but you'll still be able to hear people talking over it.
