A proper sequel to a sci-fi classic. More action oriented than its predecessor and less moody and ambient. The first film was jazz, the second rock n' roll. Both great in different ways.

Mudcrutch brings a fresh approach to the Tom Petty sound. It's more blues and rockabilly than Heartbreakers music. I think it's some of his best work in years. The first Mudcrutch record was excellent so I'm glad to report this is a worthy successor. A real band effort, each member gets their own lead track. Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench join Petty on these projects, a reunion of their band when just starting out. This is great stuff. Highly recommended.

How much you enjoy Knight of Cups is dependent upon your reaction to Malick's late stream of consciousness period ("The Tree of Life, To the Wonder"). A Hollywood screenwriter takes a pilgrimage of sorts, reflecting on his combative relationships with family and disconnected relationships with women. There's very little dialogue here. Also, little drama and convention. It's a headlong visual odyssey with hushed voice over, sound and light. It's not for mainstream tastes. It can be monotonous and dull. But it's a type of arthouse fare that one rarely sees anymore.

Only the French could pull off such a complicated relationship between an aging hit man and a 12 year old girl. It goes right up to the line. Leon the Professional is a fairy tale of sorts. It has action and sentiment and a gonzo Gary Oldman performance but it all works into a satisfying mix. The longer European cut is the real movie, not the hatchet job released in the states as The Professional.

This movie built a steady following over the years. Middle aged suburbanites with too much time on their hands begin to suspect their new neighbors are murderers. Part comedy, part horror and a dash of Scooby Doo, this has a scat vibe to it. Loose and unrestrained, it doesn't fit neatly into any category.

This movie is polished, sanitized entertainment. Hanks is miscast in the lead, unable to summon the darker shades of the character. Roberts too poised and artificial. Only Philip Seymour Hoffman gives the film any juice. Directed by Mike Nichols and written by Aaron Sorkin, you expect a lot more than this lackluster story of a flawed politician that ultimately makes a difference.
The directorial debut of the musician Prince, Under the Cherry Moon, debuts on DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The film's black-and-white cinematography is presented quite well. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include four music videos from Prince and the films' theatrical trailer.

For die hard fans only. This movie is dreadful. It may look like a throwback to 1930's costume dramas but it's a very loose rendering of a love story between a gigolo and a socialite. Badly acted, barely written and employing the word directed is being too kind. The music is great but it's not around very often. Buy the soundtrack instead. Prince's legacy is about music, anyway.

The ambition is admirable but this plays badly. Cloud Atlas is one of these time shifting parables about how we're all interconnected and the consequences of our actions create ripple effects in the order of things. At almost 3 hours, it's insufferable and actors playing multiple characters in terrible makeup don't help the cause. I bet Mitchell's book is the better expression of these ideas. The movie doesn't work.

A decent outing for Liam Neeson, if not in the same league as The Grey or Taken. Non-stop is mostly entertaining. Neeson is good, the cat and mouse moderately gripping, but with a mostly annoying Julianne Moore interfering with the tension. Take her character out of it and it would play better.

Witness is one of those rare, great films. It works as a police thriller, a cross cultural study, a romance. It has rich characters and was the major turning point for Ford in transitioning from an action adventurer into a bonafide leading man. This is a movie to own.
