Sentimental Biopic TV Movie of the Week

Too bad they couldn't just tell the story without fawning over it. Jackie Robinson is as important a baseball story as you'll find. This movie looks upon it with nostalgia and judgement, commenting on scenes instead of just letting the story unfold. Nothing feels authentic. Chadwick Boseman is ok as Robinson. Harrison Ford plays Branch Rickey in broad strokes. Racists get cinematic paybacks, enemies become friends, lessons learned, all in sepia tones with ham handed music to tell us how to feel. If you liked The Natural or The Babe, you might enjoy this sort of approach. I like my baseball movies on the Bull Durham side.

Sly gets his Groove back

What a welcome surprise. This is a great American entertainment. Well acted, gritty, heartfelt and one of the best entries in the beloved Rocky series. Credit director Ryan Coogler for all of it. This movie has just the right quiet tone. Michael B Jordan is terrific in the lead. Tessa Thompson makes the love interest more than just a bracelet. And Sly Stallone is every bit as good as his Oscar nomination suggested. Well worth your purchase and your time. One of the best movies of 2015.

If you enjoyed Wall Street, 99 Homes follows that model very closely. Michael Shannon makes for a very effective Gordon Gekko type, substituting foreclosures for stocks. The game is still the same. You get seduced by the money and power and sell your soul in the process. Aside from a too neat ending, this is one electrified drama.

For those that like 300, Game of Thrones AND Shakespeare, this is the adaptation for you. For everyone else, you will find equal emphasis on text and violence, however that suits you. There is real anguish and savagery here, some strong performances and good use of location. Best film adaptation since Polanski's version, to which it bears resemblance.

This movie is riotously funny for 45 minutes or so. Raucous, politically incorrect and funny. Then, it goes soft. Real soft. It apologizes for all the comedy that we just enjoyed with characters learning lessons and changing each other forever. Lame.

Although overlong and a little thin, this is the most complete documentary of Bob Marley I have seen. Considering his lasting influence as the premiere reggae musician, it warrants recommendation on that score alone. I've seen it. I'm happy I did, but the rewatch factor is low. I'd rather put on Live at the Roxy and jam.

Stir Crazy is the best of the four comedies Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor have made. It's a prison comedy, an anti- authority comedy and a buddy picture. It begins to take its plot a little too seriously toward the end but the laughs are there most of the way

Drop with a difference

We've seen this kind of story before. So much so that I initially resisted The Drop. Familiar, I thought. Tired, it seemed. Then I decided to catch up with it. The key to the movie's success is Tom Hardy. His character initially comes off as a sad sack, maybe a slow study, or maybe not. He keeps you guessing. All the way to the end. When is the last time a lead character in a movie surprised you? This one will. Recommended.
