Great Movie and Great Remastering!

Verified Purchase:Yes
I've owned this movie as a VHS tape, DVD, and now the Blu-ray 30th Anniversary Edition. This doesn't add much content that wasn't on previous editions, but the remastering really improves the presentation, especially on a large screen. The video and audio quality really are superb.
As to the movie itself, it's a timeless classic for the entire family. One of only a few movies that you'll watch again and again. Romance, adventure, comedy, it's all there with a terrific cast and some of the most quoted lines ever.

Not your typical romantic comedy, really understated and well done. Probably should be one of the best movies of the year. Watch it with someone you love, or want to love!

Easiest Start to Smart Home Integration
on December 16, 2017
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
This is probably as easy a way as any to get started with home automation. The kit includes a hub and four (warm white to blue white) LED lightbulbs. The setup is simple: download the app, connect the hub to an Ethernet port on your router (yes, no wifi, the hub needs a wired connection), and power the hub up. Screw the bulbs into the light sockets you want to use, turn them on, and start up the app. Follow the instructions in the app setup and a couple minutes later you're ready to go. The app will automagically connect to the hub and discover the lightbulbs. If you're old school, you can create an account at my.meethue.com and use a webbrowser for control, which is really handy.
The one gotcha is that there really isn't anything identifying each individual lightbulb so you'll need to spend an extra minute or two turning them on and off and naming them appropriately. You can not only turn the lights on, off, and dim, but you can change the color 'temperature' from a yellow-orange (like regular incandescent bulbs) to slightly bluer than normal daylight.
Philips has done a really good job integrating with Amazon Alexa and Google Home. Haven't tried Homekit, but it's also been reported to work well. IFTTT also works very well, and you can turn on lights based on time of day, sunrise-sunset, and various trigger events, such as doors opening, etc.
The hub is necessary because Hue uses Zigbee to communicate with devices. While this requires a separate hub(unlike wifi lightbulbs), it has the major advantages that it doesn't chew up your WiFi bandwidth and your router's DHCP address space. For routers with a limited DHCP address range, this can prevent a major problem. It also eliminates all the WiFi compatibility issues.
Philips seems to be actively developing for this platform and updated software is available every few weeks. The hub now plays nicely with not only Hue products, but many other Zigbee/Zwave products. Any security issues discovered seem to get patched very quickly.
All in all, this kit is an easy way to get into home lighting automation without having to spend a fortune, and on sale it's not much more than the regular dimmable LED bulbs. This is a highly recommended good first step.

The noise-canceling headphones turn on the moment you put them on, and taking them off returns them to standby mode. Great Headphones, Actually Worth the Price.
on December 14, 2017

I've had the Bowers & Wilkens PX for about a week. I've been using them daily for three to five hours a day. Summary: they are awesome sounding phones, very wearable and comfortable, with intelligently designed controls, effective ANC and great battery life. They are definitely built to last.
Sound quality is the ultimate deliverable for headphones and the PX doesn't disappoint! The clarity, crispness and detail in the sound quality are truly astonishing. Whether rock, jazz, or classical, the nuances of the performance come through like no other headphones I've tried. The sound is very balanced, so if you're looking for the head rattling mega-bass, these are not for you. If you're looking for concert hall detail and presentation with good, balanced bass, these are your phones.
In general, I've found Bluetooth headphones lacking in that the codecs are not as good as an analog wired connection. I usually find myself somewhat disappointed when connecting via bluetooth. I was really surprised that I could hear no real difference whether the PX was connected by analog cable, bluetooth, or usb cable (the ability to directly connect to a usb port is a really nice extra). It's all stellar. The ANC works well and is configurable by app for different environments. While maybe not as strong as some competitors, I could not detect any hiss which is created by a lot of ANC headphones.
Great sound is great, but doesn't matter much if the phones aren't comfortable or wearable for any length of time. When you first look at the PX, the thin, firm earcups and the hefty build suggest that you might be taking them off frequently; you would be wrong. These phones are well balanced and very comfortable around the ears. Wearing them for hours at a time is not a problem. One really nice touch is that the earcups, which tend to be the first thing to wear out on any headphone, are magnetically attached for easy replacement.
The controls are located on the right earphone, logical and well differentiated. It's easy to get the correct button. I don't understand why so many headphone makers insist on tiny, flat, nearly identical buttons, or worse, touch controls. It's not like you're taking them off to look at what you're doing. That's just not a problem with the PX. The 'smart' feature that uses sensors to turn on when you put them on and turn off (well, go stand-by) when you take them off or drop the around your neck worked very well for me. The battery life seems to be about as advertised, I've recharged them once when the battery got down to about 40% after about 12 hours of use.

Clean your carpets more efficiently with this Rogue robot vacuum. The intelligent mapping helps the device navigate quickly through your home, and it has a tri-clean system that agitates, brushes and uses suction to ensure a thorough cleaning. This Rogue robot vacuum returns to its base for recharging when the job is done.

Promising Vacuum, But Needs Improvement
on November 21, 2017
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
This is really a review of both the Hoover Rogue 970 vacuum and the Hoover Home app for Android, since much of the functionality promised is only available from the app. The app for Android only just became available, the app for IOS has been available for a little longer.
First, the vacuum itself seems to be very well constructed, very durable. The vacuum seems to pick up dirt and fur (we have two dogs) well and the dust cup seems a little larger than most robovacuums. It also picked up sand and dirt well. The sensor technology is impressive, the Rogue avoids running into walls and other obstacles very well. It also seems to be able to clean along the edges of a wall, which is something I haven't seen in a robovacuum before. The filter is rinsable, which is a nice touch.
The Android app wasn't available when I first got the Rogue, which was disappointing, since it was advertised as being supported. So I turned it loose manually; it backed away from the dock and rolled off, doing a credible job of cleaning. It is impressive watching it avoid (most) obstacles.
We have wood and tile floors, with throw rugs scattered around and it did get stuck several times trying going onto the rugs. Additionally, very disappointingly, it couldn't climb a 1/2" transition strip between the wood and tile floors. It also wedged itself really badly under a sofa and also under a recliner. It took a lot of effort (actually had to lift the recliner) to get it out. It's about 4" tall, about an inch taller than many other robovacs, and it's "wedge" detection, as well as it's rug detection, needs improvement.
The app became available and mostly works, but with some peculiarities. The mapping function (recon mode) now works, but only supports one map. The maps are used to set up 'fences' and to help the robot navigate. Since it couldn't climb the transition, half my house was unmapped. It would be really nice to be able to either add to a map or support multiple maps.
There are no notifications when the robot gets in trouble. This may be added later, but it means that you have to listen for the robot getting into trouble. I wouldn't use the scheduling at this time because it got into trouble on every run. I could simply clear the problem (usually a folded rug), start it and it would pick up where it left off, which was very nice. I didn't have to return it to it's dock, it didn't lose it's bearings.
Speaking of docks, watching it return to the dock in docking mode really demonstrated the capability of the mapping function. It heads straight to the dock finding it's way through doorways and down halls without bumping into anything of having to wander. It's really impressive.
To Hoover's credit, they seem to be actively working to address the deficiencies and extend the capabilities of the Rogue. If they continue, this will be THE robovac to get, especially at this price point. For now, it's really a product with a lot of promise that feels as if it was rushed to market.

Decent cameras, Excellent Basic Plan
on November 14, 2017
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
Setup was easy. Download the app, connect the base station, create an account, then sync the two cameras. About 20 min at a relaxed pace, including the firmware update. Figure out where to place and mount the cameras (probably the hardest part of installation) and you're done. The mounts are magnetic and the cameras just snap on and off. The cameras are weatherproof (and survived the rainstorm we had the day after installation).
Nice touch is that the control panel is available by app(android/ios) or from a web browser, so you can view or download videos on a computer or your phone. They work similarly, very easy to use and intuitively laid out. Netgear maintained the 7 day basic (free) video storage. It is probably the most generous basic package around.
Batteries are proprietary, but come fully charged and last for a long time. To charge you pull the camera out of the magnetic mount and connect it to the (also proprietary) micro-usb charger for an hour or two, then put the camera back. It's a small price to pay for not having to run wires out to a camera! The charger is a 9v charger, so your phone charger won't do. You don't remove the battery from the camera, the battery charges in the camera. Extra batteries and and external charger are available separately.
Video quality is 1080p and noticeably improved over the older Pro, but is still not as good as some other 1080p wifi cameras; however, it's certainly adequate. The motion detect sensitivity is adjustable and video can be triggered by both/either motion or sound. The Pro 2 adds motion zones, so that only motion in a certain part of the frame will trigger recording. Audio is bidirectional and audio to the camera seems to work well for intercom type applications.
Netgear has chosen the base station approach and this has its tradeoffs. Connecting cameras is trivial, and the base station has a port for a usb drive for local backup if the Internet connection goes down. Also, because they control the wifi parameters, the power consumption of maintaining the connection between camera and base station is very low when not recording, which is one reason the battery life is so good.
The disadvantage is that you can't leverage the newer mesh routers for better performance and coverage. Netgear has chosen 2.4ghz wifi only for the cameras, which adds to the clutter on your 2.4Ghz wifi band. An additional inconvenience is that the base station requires a wired ethernet connection to your Internet router. Some of the newer routers are extremely wired port limited and may require an additional ethernet switch.
Overall, the Arlo Pro 2 offers good quality recording, an excellent user interface, easy setup and camera placement, and probably the best Basic plan in the industry. It certainly should make the short list when considering a security system.

Easy Install, Setup. Great Smart Home Integration!
on November 4, 2017
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
Our situation is a little different than most since we're retired. Our schedule around the house is very unpredictable, making 'learning thermostats' pretty useless for us. We did want to add some 'smart home' features, like wifi remote control and alexa integration. And of course, we want a thermostat that will switch between heating and cooling automagically. For comparison, we have a 1900sf ranch style house with two stage forced air heating and two stage air conditioning.
This was replacing an older Honeywell thermostat. It took about 20 min including initial setup. Honeywell used the same mounting hole pattern so I didn't even have to drill new anchor holes. The setup was trivial, follow the walk-thru and answer the questions. One note, it is necessary to have a "C" wire (common), so that's something you should check. The unit is very small. It would have been nice if Honeywell had included a wall bezel because it's so much smaller than other thermostats and you may find a small painting job as part of your installation.
The thermostat is 'registered' with the honeywell site during the setup process, assuming that wifi is configured. You then create a personal account at the site and link to the thermostat in order to control it. Control is available by web browser, smartphone app, and alexa/google voice.
The new display is very clean and the menu system easy and intuitive. It displays the indoor temperature, exterior temperature from a local weather service, setpoint, time, and HAC status. There are menu selections across the top and setpoint up/down arrows. The touchscreen interface works very well. The smartphone app and web interface are particularly nice because our schedule is so irregular. We can set the 'away' setting when we leave and 'resume' on the way home. The alexa interface is pretty comprehensive, you can check the temperature, make it warmer or cooler by some degrees, or set to a fixed temperature.
The thermostat works very well with multi-stage HAC, keeping the temperature in a much tighter range while not overcycling and using the lower energy stage setting. One really interesting feature is that the fan can be set to 'circulate' to move the air around when the HAC is off. The fan only will automatically come on about 1/3 of the time the HAC is off to circulate the air and balance the temperature throughout the house.

This is The Ultrabook You've Been Waiting For
on October 25, 2017
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
Wow! I originally thought I would use this mostly for travel, but it's now replaced my larger high end 15" laptop entirely. The smaller screen is so sharp I haven't really noticed the smaller size. With the performance and utility, I find myself using it more than I ever used my larger laptop, and replacing my phone for some things.
HP took the already excellent Spectre 13 ultrabook, improved it, and really got it right. This is not only an everyday laptop, it's an everywhere laptop. With a 13 in screen and at two and a half pounds, it's small and light enough to carry all the time. With the new processor, it's powerful enough to handle just about anything.
To an already excellent keyboard and touchpad, they added:
* an edge to edge touchscreen (yes, they added a touchscreen with no plastic bezel) that is ultrasharp and beautiful
* eighth gen Intel I7 cpu that doubles the cores and significantly improves performance over last year
* improved and louder sound
* improved battery life (used full time, I am seeing 10% battery drain/hour, or 10 hrs ish battery lifef)
* beautiful new white color
Although there are only usb-c connectors for expansion, HP includes a usb-c to usb-A adapter in the box which makes it easy to use standard usb accessories. They also include a slipcover, which is a nice touch.
All in all, I am really pleased with the new HP Spectre 13 ultrabook and highly recommend it.

Typical Shark, Quality Product, Value Priced
on October 20, 2017
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
I have a Shark Liftaway (manual) vacuum that I like a lot and so was excited to see a robotic vacuum from Shark. This is a fantastic product that compares in features to much more expensive robots. Setup was easy, download the app, dock the robot, and follow the steps in the app to connect. Setup the schedule and wait for a clean house.
We have a seemingly endless supply of dog fur from our two dogs. I used to vacuum the house once or twice a week for an hour or two, balancing my annoyance at furry floors vs vacuuming. We now have the Shark Robot sweeping the house daily. It does an great job of keeping up with the fur. It's very quiet, quieter than many other robots. The low profile is small enough to get under most of our furniture. It does a really good job with fur, hair, and fine debris like dust and dirt.
We have a number of throw rugs and it handles those as well, in both cleaning and transition from the wood floors. Mostly the robot tries to get out of any jams and seems to succeed. The one time it did get stuck, I got a notification in the app that the robot was stuck and powering down. The robot did a good job avoiding the step down into our living room and there is a 'boundary strip' that can be used to wall off 'no go' areas or to keep the robot in one room.
That said, while it does a great job of maintenance (certainly cleaner that I would keep the house on a daily basis!), it doesn't replace a thorough manual vacuuming. Certain corners and behind doors, for example, are really beyond the capability of all the robot vacuums. But manually doing touchup vacuuming is a few minute instead of an hour or two. Also, small items like dog chew toys have to be picked up before you loose the Shark.
Robot vacuums are a real convenience and the Shark ION 750 is a real winner in the product category in terms of features, performance and value. Definitely recommended!

Excellent Monitor, Great Form Factor
on October 12, 2017
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
You'll notice the difference with this monitor as soon as you unbox it; the bezel is almost non-existent. The quarter-inch or so bezel is hidden behind the screen, making an almost edge to edge viewing surface. The screen quality is excellent right out of the box, and there are a variety of preset and user-settable settings to customize it to your taste.
I noticed no blurring playing games at high frame rates and the monitor was very sharp for both gaming and office applications. The color preset out of the box seems a bit less red than the monitor it replaced, and was very pleasing to my eye. The dynamic range was excellent, almost as if Acer was using an HDR screen in the monitor. And at 1920x1080 resolution, the picture was sharp with no trace of 'grainyess' that can sometimes affect larger monitors.
One very nice feature is that DVI-D, HDMI, and VGA inputs are all provided, and the monitor will auto-switch between them (or you can select the input). So not will it support a variety of video cards, it's kinda like having a built in video switch.
One final note, the power brick is external, but very small (maybe 1"x1"x3") and has a separate wall power cord; it is not a wall wart and will only take one plug on a power strip.
